Not as an ordinary way to stop. A parking brake is not a substitute for the brake pedal. Some cars with an electronic parking brake (EPB) allow it to be used for emergency braking if the brake pedal fails, but the control and response vary by vehicle. Check the owner’s manual for your exact make, model, and year before relying on any procedure.
What happens if you apply the parking brake while driving?
It depends on the car. A traditional lever-operated handbrake and an electronic parking-brake switch do not have one universal response when used while the vehicle is moving. The manuals cited here describe emergency procedures for specific electronic systems, not a method that applies to every car.
Manufacturers warn that moving application can be hazardous. Hyundai says emergency stopping distance may be longer than normal, while Kia warns that applying the EPB at normal speeds can cause sudden loss of control. Ford’s U.S. owner-manual guidance says its system engages ABS when applied while moving and should be reserved for situations where the normal brake system cannot stop the vehicle.
When do manufacturers say an electronic parking brake can be used?
Some manufacturers describe the EPB as an emergency option if the service brake pedal has a problem. The action in the manuals below is to pull and hold the switch, but that instruction is specific to the vehicles covered by those manuals.

- Function: 18.L 3.5L electric parking brake actuator assembly is also the electronic parking brake system. Electronic parking brake (Electrical Park Brake, EPB) with the technology that integrates the temporary braking during driving and the long-term braking function after parking, and achieve the parking brake through electronic control.
- Material: this electric parking brake handbrake actuator control unit is made of quality plastic and metal material for high strength, UV resistant, performance and reliability.
- Hyundai: The cited 2025 and 2026 U.S. manuals say to pull and hold the EPB switch if there is a problem with the brake pedal while driving. Braking occurs only while the switch is held, and stopping distance may be longer than normal. The 2025 manual says not to operate the EPB while moving except in an emergency. 2025 Hyundai owner’s manual; 2026 Hyundai owner’s manual.
- Kia: The cited 2025 U.S. manual says emergency braking is possible by pulling and holding the EPB switch if the brake pedal has a problem. It cautions that applying the EPB at normal speeds can cause sudden loss of control and advises great caution if it must be used to stop the vehicle. The manual states: “Do not operate the Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) while the vehicle is moving except in an emergency.” Kia owner’s manuals.
- Ford: The U.S. owner-manual page for the vehicle it covers says applying the electric parking brake while moving engages ABS and should be reserved for cases where the normal brake system cannot stop the vehicle, such as a broken or blocked brake pedal. Ford notes that online manual information can vary from the printed manual. Ford owner’s manuals.
What to do if the brake pedal fails
Use the emergency procedure specified in the owner’s manual for your exact vehicle. Do not assume that a switch press, pull, or hold will produce the same result across models. The cited guidance establishes no universal stopping-distance figure or risk percentage; Hyundai’s warning is qualitative, not a measured distance.

The word “handbrake” can refer to a mechanical lever or to an electronic parking-brake switch. The material above does not establish how every design behaves while moving, nor does it provide a comprehensive comparison across systems. Look up the make, model, and year in the owner’s manual and find its instructions for emergency braking with the parking brake.
