Usually, no. For a typical U.S. Tesla that does not already have an outright-purchased Full Self-Driving (Supervised) entitlement, Tesla currently lists FSD as a $99-per-month subscription. You may use it without starting your own subscription only if the car retains a prior owner’s purchased entitlement, Tesla grants a delivery trial, or you redeem a limited one-month gift card. Check the specific vehicle in the Tesla app and on its touchscreen before buying or relying on any claim that FSD is included.
What “without a subscription” means
There are two different questions hidden in this wording. First, can you avoid paying a recurring monthly charge? Sometimes. Second, can any Tesla owner turn on FSD (Supervised) for free whenever they want? No. Tesla’s current U.S. support information says the feature is available as a subscription, currently priced at $99 per month, and that both price and feature availability can change.

An owner can avoid a personal subscription when the vehicle already carries an entitlement purchased outright by an earlier owner, when Tesla supplies a time-limited delivery offer, or when a one-month FSD gift card is applied. Those are exceptions, not a general free-access policy. A previous owner’s subscription does not transfer to the next owner.

The current U.S. cost and the lack of a new purchase option
Tesla’s U.S. Full Self-Driving (Supervised) support page lists $99 USD per month. The page does not present a general current option for a new customer to buy FSD outright for a vehicle. Tesla reserves the right to change the price and the features included, so treat the figure as a current listing rather than a guaranteed lifetime rate.
That distinction matters when comparing a used Tesla with a new subscription. A used car may have a valuable entitlement already attached to it, while an otherwise identical car may require a $99 monthly payment. Do not infer that FSD is included from a listing that merely says “FSD capable,” “Autopilot hardware,” or “trial.” Ask whether the prior owner purchased FSD outright and whether the entitlement remains with this vehicle.
Ways to use FSD without starting your own recurring subscription

Used Tesla with FSD purchased by the previous owner
Tesla says a used vehicle can retain FSD when its previous owner purchased the package outright and did not transfer it to another vehicle. The entitlement is associated with the car under Tesla’s applicable rules, rather than with the former owner’s monthly billing.
The crucial distinction is purchase versus subscription. If the former owner only subscribed, that subscription ends with the ownership or account relationship; you must subscribe with your own Tesla account. Tesla also notes that package-specific cases can depend on when a package was purchased, so a seller’s verbal description is not enough evidence.

Before completing a used-car purchase, have the seller show the vehicle’s current software and package information. On the touchscreen, inspect Controls > Software. Also check the vehicle in the Tesla app after it is associated with your account, or ask Tesla support to confirm the entitlement. Written listing language such as “Full Self-Driving computer” does not by itself prove that the FSD software package is included.
Delivery trials on new Teslas
Tesla’s general support information says new Model S, Model 3, Model X, Model Y and Cybertruck owners may receive an opportunity to try the latest FSD features at delivery. The exact duration, eligibility and terms are offer-specific and can change by market and delivery date.
Look for the trial in the order, delivery or vehicle account details rather than assuming every new Tesla receives the same offer. A trial that appears during delivery is temporary; when it expires, continued access normally requires an eligible subscription unless the vehicle has a separate retained entitlement.
The one-month gift-card route
Tesla’s gift-card support information describes a one-month FSD gift card. This can provide temporary access without you enrolling in a continuing monthly plan, but it is still a payment or gift-card mechanism for one month of service. It should not be described as a free permanent alternative to a subscription.

Confirm the card’s expiration, redemption instructions and vehicle eligibility in the offer itself. Tesla can change gift-card terms, and a card that worked for one vehicle or account may not be valid for another.
The v14 trial is not a current free option
Tesla’s v14 trial page states: “The Full Self-Driving (Supervised) v14 trial is no longer available for new and existing owners.” Do not rely on older articles or social posts that present the v14 promotion as an active way to avoid payment.
The same information says eligible subscribers can install software version 14.2 or later to experience v14 updates without needing a trial. That describes software access for eligible subscribers; it does not restore a free trial for non-subscribers.

Tesla says its FSD transfer program is no longer available. Customers who took delivery of a new Tesla by March 31, 2026, may have qualified under the program’s cutoff, but that historical eligibility does not let a current buyer transfer FSD today. Do not price a used car on the assumption that you can move the seller’s package to a different Tesla.

How to check whether a particular Tesla is eligible
Eligibility is vehicle-specific. Tesla identifies FSD computer 3.0 or newer as a requirement for eligible vehicles, but the computer generation alone is not a promise that every FSD feature will work. Configuration, other hardware, software version, location and local availability also matter. Tesla says a prerequisite hardware upgrade may be required and can cost extra.
- Open the Tesla app for the vehicle. Use the vehicle owner’s account and look for the upgrades or software-upgrade area. The app is the authoritative place to see whether Tesla offers FSD for that car and account.
- Check the touchscreen. Review Controls > Software for the vehicle’s installed software, computer information and any displayed package or upgrade status.
- Confirm the market. Tesla lists subscription availability in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Australia, New Zealand and several European markets, but feature access varies by configuration and location. A feature offered in one country may not be enabled in another.
- Install required software. Tesla says the car needs a software update before subscribed features become available. Keep the vehicle connected and follow the update prompt rather than assuming payment alone activates FSD.
- Ask about prerequisite hardware. If the app requests an upgrade, read the stated price and scope. Paying for a computer or other prerequisite does not automatically mean you have purchased the FSD software entitlement.
For a used-car transaction, complete these checks before signing. If the vehicle is still attached to the seller’s account, ask the seller to demonstrate the entitlement in the car and provide the purchase records available to them. After transfer, recheck the app because account ownership and vehicle association affect what you can subscribe to and what Tesla recognizes as included.

If the vehicle is eligible and no permanent entitlement is present, the owner account can start the monthly plan from the Tesla app through Upgrades > Software Upgrades. An eligible vehicle may also show the subscription option on its touchscreen. Only the Tesla account that owns the vehicle can subscribe through the app.

- Review the displayed price, terms, region and any required hardware or software step before confirming.
- Complete the purchase and install the requested vehicle software update.
- When driving, follow Tesla’s prompts and remain attentive; activation does not change the system into an autonomous vehicle.
The amount shown at checkout is the one to rely on for your account and market. Tesla’s published U.S. figure is $99 per month, but prices and feature availability are subject to change.

What happens when you cancel
Tesla says you can cancel an FSD subscription at any time in the app. Cancellation stops future billing, but it does not end access immediately. The paid access period continues through the current billing period after cancellation is processed.
Payments are not prorated, and Tesla says subscription refunds are unavailable. If you cancel shortly after a renewal, you should expect to retain access until that paid period ends rather than receive a partial-month refund. Save the cancellation confirmation and check the next billing date in the app.
What FSD (Supervised) can and cannot promise
The word “Full” can mislead shoppers. Tesla’s own product statement calls the system supervised driver assistance and requires active driver attention. You remain responsible for the vehicle’s operation and must be ready to take over immediately.

Tesla’s Model S Owner’s Manual warns that behavior can vary with market region, manufacture date, configuration, purchased options, self-driving hardware and software. The manual specifically identifies situations such as narrow roads, construction zones and complex intersections as places where intervention may be needed. Exact instructions and available features differ by model and model year, so use the manual for the vehicle you will drive.
- Keep your eyes and attention on the driving environment even when the system is engaged.
- Be prepared to steer, brake or otherwise take control without waiting for a warning.
- Expect different behavior after software updates or when crossing into a different market or road environment.
- Do not let a trial, gift card or inherited entitlement change your safety expectations.
A practical decision guide
If you are buying a used Tesla
- Ask whether FSD was purchased outright or accessed only through a subscription.
- Verify the package in Controls > Software and in the Tesla app, not just the sales listing.
- Confirm that the entitlement was not transferred to another vehicle.
- Check hardware, software version and local eligibility before assigning a dollar value to FSD.
If you are taking delivery of a new Tesla
- Read the delivery offer for the exact vehicle and market.
- Record the trial’s start and end terms if one is provided.
- Do not assume the v14 promotion or an old transfer program is still active.
- Decide whether the $99-per-month listing is worthwhile only after confirming the car can actually subscribe.
If you already own the car
- Use the app’s Upgrades > Software Upgrades path to see the live offer.
- Install required updates before judging whether the feature is available.
- Check for a prerequisite hardware charge before confirming payment.
- If you cancel, do it before the next renewal when possible; access remains until the paid period ends and the payment is not prorated.
Bottom line for buyers and owners
In the United States, a Tesla without a retained outright-purchased FSD entitlement generally requires the $99-per-month FSD (Supervised) subscription listed by Tesla. The legitimate ways to use it without starting that recurring plan are limited: an inherited purchased entitlement, a qualifying delivery trial or a one-month gift card. The v14 free trial and FSD transfer program are not current general options. Verify the vehicle in Tesla’s app and touchscreen, and remember that every enabled feature still requires an attentive driver ready to take over.
