A CR2032 3 V battery is specified for the key described in the 2024 Mercedes-Benz CLA Owner’s Manual, while the 2016 CLS manual specifies a CR2025 3 V battery. Mercedes key fobs do not all use the same cell: check the manual for your exact vehicle and key, or read the number on the battery you remove, before buying a replacement.
Which battery does your Mercedes key fob need?
Match the battery designation and voltage to your particular key. The two Mercedes-Benz manuals cited here document different requirements:

These are model- and key-specific examples, not interchangeable recommendations. A genuine Mercedes-Benz parts listing identifies part 000000-002008-64 as a CR2032 3 V battery, but the listing explicitly does not provide vehicle fitment information; it cannot confirm that the cell is right for your car. To find your vehicle’s instructions, use Mercedes-Benz’s owner’s manual resource, which offers selection by model and body style and covers models dating back to 2012. Confirm that the manual matches your vehicle and key generation. If the manual is unavailable, check the number printed on the existing battery rather than guessing from the car’s brand alone.

How to replace the battery in the key described by the 2024 CLA manual
Mercedes-Benz recommends having the battery replaced at a qualified specialist workshop. The manual’s instructions below apply to the key it describes; other Mercedes keys can have different designs and procedures.
- Remove the mechanical key.
- Press the release knob and slide off the cover.
- Remove the battery compartment, then take out the discharged battery.
- Place the CR2032 3 V replacement according to the positive-pole markings in the key.
- Reinstall the battery compartment and cover, then check the key.
Follow the polarity markings in your own key or its manual; do not assume that the battery’s orientation is the same across key designs.

Why a different Mercedes key may require a CR2025
The 2016 CLS Operator’s Manual specifies a CR2025 3 V cell for its SmartKey, illustrating why a CR2032 should not be treated as a universal Mercedes replacement. That manual describes a different procedure: it directs the owner to insert the battery with the positive terminal facing upward, use a lint-free cloth, close the cover, and check the SmartKey buttons. Consult the applicable Mercedes-Benz manual rather than applying these steps to another key.

A swallowed coin cell can cause fatal injury. The 2022 CLS Owner’s Manual says to keep batteries out of children’s reach and seek immediate medical attention if one is swallowed. Keep both new and used cells away from children while working on the key.

Do not put a discharged battery in household rubbish. Mercedes-Benz directs owners to a qualified specialist workshop or used-battery collection point; follow local disposal rules for your area. See the applicable owner’s manual.
