What happened to Tesla sales in Australia in 2025?
Tesla delivered 28,856 vehicles in Australia in 2025, down from 38,347 in 2024, according to Electric Vehicle Council (EVC) data reported by CarExpert on 5 January 2026. That is a 24.8% year-on-year fall.
The brand total conceals sharply different results for its two models. Model 3 deliveries dropped by 61.3%, while Model Y deliveries increased by 4.6%.

Is Tesla still declining in Australia?
Not in the latest available monthly comparison. Tesla recorded 5,654 Australian deliveries in September 2026, up 21.3% from September 2025. Model Y deliveries were 4,476, up 14.0%, according to carsales for Business, reporting FCAI VFACTS and EVC data on 6 October 2026.
The Driven’s model-by-model 2026 table, updated 2 October, records 35,930 Model Y deliveries and 5,775 Model 3 deliveries year to date through September. Model Y was third among September nameplates, behind the Ford Ranger and Toyota RAV4.

Monthly results have varied
Model Y monthly deliveries in the Driven table ranged from 288 in January to 8,072 in June 2026. The listed sequence was 288 in January, 2,791 in February, 2,818 in March, 822 in April, 5,605 in May, 8,072 in June, 4,644 in July, 6,414 in August and 4,476 in September. That variation is a reason not to treat one month as proof of a lasting trend.
June also illustrates the wider market context, not the cause of Tesla’s 2025 decline. Australia recorded 140,058 new-vehicle deliveries that month, up 9.9% year on year; Tesla delivered 8,670, including 8,072 Model Ys. The Model Y was the country’s top-selling vehicle for the second month running, according to carsales for Business’ June 2026 market report.

What explains the 2025 fall?
The reported figures show that Model 3 deliveries fell steeply while Model Y deliveries rose modestly. They do not establish why. The sources cited here do not verify a specific cause such as competition, pricing, supply timing, model-cycle changes or brand reputation, and no direct Tesla explanation for the Australian 2025 decrease is established in them.
In a July 2026 release, EVC chief executive Julie Delvecchio said: “After a record end-of-financial-year month, we expected softer numbers in July. But the underlying trend remains clear: EV sales are well ahead of last year, consumer choice is expanding, and Australians are responding to lower running costs.” That is the Council CEO’s interpretation of the broader EV market, not independent evidence explaining Tesla’s sales movement. How to read the Australian sales figures
- Check the time period. A full-year 2025 result, a September year-on-year comparison and a year-to-date 2026 total answer different questions.
- Separate brand and model totals. The 2025 Tesla decline was not shared equally by Model 3 and Model Y.
- Distinguish deliveries from orders. The EVC says its monthly report records vehicles when delivered, not when ordered.
- Check report coverage. The EVC’s monthly report includes participating brands, not every Australian vehicle brand. The Council’s July 2026 release also cautions that some individual EV model data are unavailable.
For example, the EVC reported 4,921 combined Tesla and Polestar battery-electric vehicle sales in July 2026, compared with 1,147 in July 2025. Those are combined figures, not Tesla-only totals. Its combined Tesla-and-Polestar calendar-year tally through July was 29,711, versus 16,466 over the same period in 2025.
The evidence therefore supports two distinct conclusions: Tesla’s Australian deliveries suffered a substantial annual fall in 2025, led by Model 3, while September 2026 showed year-on-year growth and high year-to-date Model Y volume. One rebound month does not by itself prove a permanent recovery.
