A controller-only upgrade can add a touch surface or a newer shortcut-button layout while retaining the original head unit. A full CCC or CIC conversion to NBT or NBT EVO replaces major hardware and requires compatible wiring, display, controller and vehicle coding. If your real goal is wireless CarPlay or Android Auto, an MMI or decoder module may deliver it with less disruption by retaining the factory screen and controls.
There is no universal BMW parts list. Identify the system fitted to the car, confirm compatibility by VIN and chassis, and establish which factory functions must continue working before ordering anything.

What a BMW iDrive retrofit can actually change
“Retrofitting iDrive” can describe three very different projects:
- Controller retrofit: replaces the center-console controller, potentially adding a touchpad and a different physical-button arrangement. The original head unit remains in the car.
- Full-generation conversion: replaces a CCC or CIC system with NBT or NBT EVO hardware. This is an integration project involving the head unit, display, controller, wiring and coding.
- MMI or decoder installation: adds smartphone interfaces such as wireless CarPlay or Android Auto while keeping the factory BMW screen, menus and controls on supported vehicles.
A new controller does not turn a CCC or CIC computer into NBT EVO. Conversely, a full-generation conversion is unnecessary if the only objective is smartphone integration. Treat the desired outcome—not the product name—as the starting point.

Identify the iDrive system before buying parts
BMW generations commonly encountered in retrofit work include CCC, CIC, NBT, NBT EVO and MGU. Their model-year ranges overlap because BMW introduced systems by model rather than switching every vehicle in one calendar year. The build year alone therefore cannot identify the installed head unit.
Use the car’s visible features
Inspect the menu layout, screen presentation and center-console controller. Note whether the controller has a touch surface, how many shortcut buttons surround it and whether the display and navigation interface match the system you believe is installed. These clues narrow the possibilities but should not replace vehicle-data verification.
Confirm with VIN and build information
Use the vehicle’s VIN and build data to establish the factory equipment, then ask the retrofit supplier to confirm the exact head-unit and chassis compatibility. This step matters even when two cars appear identical: connector layouts, displays, controller communication and supported options can differ between models and production configurations.

Option 1: retrofit the physical iDrive controller
A controller retrofit is the smallest hardware change. It is appropriate when you want a touchpad, a newer control surface or a different shortcut-button layout, and your existing head unit supports that controller.
What the kit normally contains
One documented touch-controller kit includes an iDrive touch controller, an iDrive touch module and a wiring harness. The supplier describes this as an option for a BMW that was not equipped with the touch controller from the factory. The kit changes the physical input device; it does not replace the navigation computer or upgrade the underlying iDrive generation.
Compatibility checks
- Verify that the existing head unit can communicate with the proposed controller.
- Check the controller’s communication bus and connector arrangement for the exact chassis.
- Confirm that the controller fits the center-console trim opening. A different button footprint may require trim changes.
- Confirm whether the touch module needs a particular harness or adapter rather than a direct connection.
- Ask whether the feature requires activation coding for your vehicle’s configuration.
Installation and coding
Removing the center console is part of the documented installation. After the controller, module and harness are installed, activation coding is required according to the supplier’s instructions. Plan for both physical work and software configuration; plugging in a controller alone may leave the touch function inactive or produce faults.

When this is the sensible choice
Choose this route when the original head unit already provides the functions you need and the complaint is primarily about ergonomics. It has less hardware risk than a head-unit swap, but it cannot provide capabilities that the original computer does not support.

Option 2: convert CCC or CIC to NBT or NBT EVO
A full conversion can provide a newer BMW interface and associated capabilities, but it is not a universal plug-in replacement. BMW retrofit documentation for an E-series installation organizes the work into parts, preparation, wiring, installation and concluding coding or basic settings. That workflow reflects the nature of the job: hardware integration comes first, followed by vehicle configuration.
Hardware you may need
- A compatible NBT or NBT EVO head unit.
- A display that matches the chosen head unit and the dashboard mounting arrangement.
- The corresponding iDrive controller.
- A vehicle-specific wiring harness or adapter.
- GPS or antenna components where the selected installation requires them.
- Trim or mounting changes to accommodate the new display or controller.
- Camera and other integration hardware when the original equipment is not directly compatible.
An adapter marketed for E-series BMWs originally equipped with CCC or CIC can support NBT or EVO navigation installation, iDrive touch-controller operation, navigation and camera-system support. Some EVO installations have separate GPS-data adaptation requirements. Those features are evidence of what a particular adapter supports, not a guarantee that every E-series car or every EVO unit will work without additional parts.
Typical installation sequence
- Document the starting car: record the VIN, installed generation, display, controller, camera equipment and audio configuration.
- Match the parts: obtain confirmation that the selected head unit, display, controller and adapter are compatible with the chassis and vehicle options.
- Prepare the vehicle: save any settings or diagnostic information needed by the installer and plan for battery-safe electrical work.
- Remove the original components: access the head unit, screen and controller without damaging trim or connectors.
- Install the wiring and adapter: connect the vehicle-specific harness, communication interfaces and any GPS or camera components required by the chosen system.
- Fit the replacement hardware: mount the NBT or NBT EVO head unit, compatible display and controller, checking connector seating and physical clearance.
- Code and perform basic settings: configure the vehicle so the new modules are recognized and the required functions are enabled.
- Test every retained function: verify the display, audio, navigation, controller, steering-wheel controls, camera image and parking sensors before refitting all trim.
Why coding is part of the conversion
The replacement modules must be configured for the vehicle rather than merely powered. BMW retrofit documentation explicitly identifies “concluding work, coding and basic settings” as a final installation phase. Depending on the hardware and vehicle, activation or FSC-related requirements may also apply. The exact coding procedure is kit- and vehicle-specific, so a generic sequence copied from another chassis is unsafe.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsOption 3: add an MMI or decoder module
If your priority is wireless CarPlay or Android Auto, an MMI or decoder can be the lower-disruption solution. On supported CIC, NBT and NBT EVO vehicles, the module can preserve the factory screen, iDrive controller, steering-wheel buttons and BMW menus while adding the smartphone interface.

Advantages
- The original head unit remains installed.
- Factory controls and the screen can continue to operate.
- There is no need to replace the BMW navigation computer merely to gain smartphone integration.
- The installation is generally less invasive than a full generation swap, although it still requires a generation-specific interface and physical installation.
Limitations
- An MMI does not convert CCC into NBT EVO.
- Compatibility is limited to the supported iDrive generation, display arrangement and vehicle configuration.
- Integration quality depends on the interface and its wiring; camera, audio and control behavior must be tested after installation.
- It adds a second interface layer rather than replacing the BMW system.
How the three approaches compare
| Approach | Starting systems | Head unit | Main hardware work | Coding or activation | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Controller retrofit | Supported existing BMW systems; verify by chassis and VIN | Retained | Touch controller, touch module, harness and possible trim work | Activation coding documented by the supplier | Adding a touch surface or newer physical controls |
| CCC/CIC to NBT or NBT EVO | Selected chassis, including documented E-series applications | Replaced | Head unit, display, controller, adapter or wiring, GPS or antenna parts where required, and possible trim changes | Vehicle coding and basic settings; some EVO installations require GPS-data adaptation | A newer factory iDrive generation |
| MMI or decoder | Supported CIC, NBT and NBT EVO vehicles | Retained | Generation-specific interface and installation wiring | Follow the interface-specific installation requirements | CarPlay or Android Auto with minimal change to BMW controls |
Factory functions to verify after any retrofit
Do not judge the installation only by whether the screen turns on. Test each function that depends on the affected modules:
- Controller movement, selection, shortcut buttons and touchpad input.
- Screen resolution, brightness, menus and wake-up behavior.
- Navigation position and map operation, including GPS reception where applicable.
- Reversing and other camera views, including automatic switching when selecting reverse.
- Parking sensors and their visual or audible warnings.
- Steering-wheel audio, telephone and voice-control buttons.
- Audio output, Bluetooth, USB and the original BMW menus.
- Warnings, diagnostic faults and behavior after a complete vehicle sleep cycle.
Common pitfalls and how to avoid them
Ordering by year alone
Overlapping introduction dates mean that two BMWs from the same year can have different iDrive generations. Use the menu, controller and display as clues, then verify the VIN and build data.
Assuming a controller changes the head unit
A touch controller changes the input hardware. It does not add NBT or EVO processing, navigation features or display capabilities to an unsupported CCC or CIC computer.
Mixing incompatible generations
A display, controller and head unit must communicate through the correct connectors, bus and configuration. Ask for a complete compatibility confirmation rather than combining attractive parts from different kits.

Leaving coding until the end without a plan
Coding is not an optional cosmetic step on many conversions. Confirm who will perform it, what activation is required and whether the installer can restore the original configuration if the retrofit fails.
Forgetting cameras or GPS
Camera integration and GPS adaptation can require additional hardware or configuration, particularly in some EVO installations. Include those requirements in the parts list before removing the original system.
Refitting trim before testing
Test every control and vehicle function with the system fully assembled electrically but before reinstalling all trim. This makes a loose connector or incorrect configuration easier to locate.
A practical decision framework
- Want only a better physical interface? Investigate a controller retrofit and verify head-unit support.
- Want the newer BMW navigation generation? Plan a complete CCC or CIC to NBT or NBT EVO conversion with matched hardware, wiring and coding.
- Want CarPlay or Android Auto? Compare a supported MMI or decoder before considering a full head-unit replacement.
- Need factory cameras, sensors and steering-wheel controls? Make those retained functions explicit in the compatibility request and final test plan.
- Uncertain about the parts? Send the VIN, chassis, current iDrive photos and equipment list to a BMW retrofit specialist before purchasing.
Cost, labor and reversibility
No reliable cross-model price, success-rate or failure-rate figure applies to these projects. The total depends on the chassis, starting generation, selected hardware, display and controller requirements, wiring, GPS or camera integration, trim work, coding and labor. A controller retrofit is usually a smaller physical intervention than a full-generation conversion, while an MMI avoids replacing the head unit but still carries installation and compatibility risk.
Ask for an itemized quote that separates hardware, adapters, trim, installation, coding or activation, and troubleshooting if a retained function does not work. Also ask whether the original head unit and controller will be returned, since retaining them can make the upgrade more reversible.
Bottom line
BMWs can accept physical-button, controller and older-to-newer iDrive retrofits, but feasibility is vehicle-specific. Identify CCC, CIC, NBT, NBT EVO or MGU from the actual car and VIN, then choose the least invasive path that delivers your goal. Controller upgrades solve an interface problem; NBT or EVO conversions replace the factory generation; MMI or decoder modules solve smartphone-integration needs while preserving more of the original system. In every case, compatible hardware, correct wiring and appropriate coding determine whether the result is a dependable retrofit rather than an expensive collection of mismatched parts.
