Not automatically. Whether you may drive an ID.4 with an open battery recall depends on the vehicle’s 17-character VIN, the specific recall campaign and the latest instructions for that campaign. Check the VIN in the NHTSA recall tool and Volkswagen’s recall and service-campaign lookup, then ask an authorized Volkswagen dealer whether the vehicle may be driven, must remain parked outside, needs an 80% charging limit or should be transported for repair.
The safe answer is campaign-specific
An “open recall” only means that a safety campaign is recorded as unrepaired. It does not, by itself, tell you whether driving is allowed. ID.4 battery campaigns have used different interim measures, and a model-year listing cannot establish that your individual vehicle is included.

If your notice says do not drive, do not drive. If it says to park outdoors, follow that instruction. If it imposes a charging limit, use that limit until the manufacturer or dealer confirms that the remedy is complete. If the notice gives no such restriction, do not treat the absence of a checkbox as a personal safety clearance; confirm the instructions for your VIN with Volkswagen.

Why there is no single “ID.4 battery recall” rule
Several campaigns concern different production groups and different battery risks. Campaign numbers are therefore more useful than a headline saying simply “ID.4 battery recall.”
U.S. recall 26V030, Volkswagen campaign 93EA
NHTSA recall 26V030 covers certain 2023–2025 ID.4 vehicles. Volkswagen’s filing identifies 43,881 potentially affected vehicles. The reported defect is that a high-voltage battery may overheat.
The listed remedy is performed by a dealer: a battery health check and updated software, with affected cell modules replaced if the inspection shows they are needed. The filing does not mark the consumer-advisory boxes for “Do Not Drive” or “Park Outside.” That filing detail describes the campaign record; it is not a blanket authorization to drive every ID.4 in the population. Your VIN-specific notice and the dealer’s current instructions control.
U.S. recall 26V028, Volkswagen campaign 93EW
NHTSA recall 26V028 applies to a production-defined subset of certain 2023–2024 ID.4 vehicles. Volkswagen reported 670 potentially involved vehicles. The issue concerns potentially misaligned battery-cell electrodes.

This campaign’s interim directions include parking the vehicle outside and limiting the battery to 80% state of charge while the remedy is pending. Those precautions belong to campaign 93EW. Do not apply them to another ID.4 campaign merely because both involve the high-voltage battery, and do not assume that an ID.4 outside the affected production group has the same restriction.
Canada: Transport Canada notice 2026469
Transport Canada notice 2026469, updated October 9, 2026, covers certain 2023–2025 ID.4 vehicles in Canada. It tells owners to limit charging to 80% until repairs are complete. At the time of that notice, corrective actions were still under development.
Canadian instructions are jurisdiction-specific. They should not be presented as the U.S. instruction for every ID.4, just as a U.S. campaign number should not be assumed to govern a Canadian vehicle. Use the recall system and notice issued for the country where your vehicle is registered.

The vehicle counts are campaign populations, not the probability that a particular ID.4 will fail. Eligibility, interim measures and remedy timing can change as records are revised.

How to check whether your ID.4 is affected
Use both official lookup systems because a model-year search is only general information. A VIN search is needed to determine whether a specific vehicle has an unrepaired recall.
- Find the 17-character VIN. Use the VIN printed on the vehicle and registration documents. Enter all characters exactly; a single incorrect character can return the wrong result.
- Search NHTSA. Open the NHTSA recall tool and run the VIN search. Review every open safety recall, not just entries containing the word “battery.”
- Search Volkswagen. Check the same VIN in Volkswagen’s recall and service-campaign lookup. Compare the campaign number, description and status with the NHTSA result.
- Record the identifiers. Write down the NHTSA number, such as 26V030 or 26V028, and the Volkswagen campaign number, such as 93EA or 93EW. Give both numbers to the dealer.
- Read the interim instructions. Look specifically for do-not-drive language, an outdoor-parking requirement, a charging ceiling, a warning to avoid charging or instructions for arranging transport.
- Call an authorized Volkswagen dealer. Ask whether the campaign is open on your VIN, whether the remedy is available, what you should do before the appointment and whether the vehicle should be driven or transported.
A “no recalls found” result means no matching open safety recall was returned for the VIN at the time of the search. It does not replace normal vehicle maintenance, and it can differ from a general model-year article or an earlier letter. Save a screenshot or printout with the date of your check.
What to do while the recall remains open
If the notice says “do not drive”
Leave the ID.4 parked and contact Volkswagen or the dealer for instructions on getting it repaired. Do not make a short trip to the dealership simply because the distance is convenient. Ask whether the dealer wants the vehicle towed and how to arrange an appointment for an unrepaired recall.

Keep the vehicle outdoors, away from an attached garage or other enclosed structure, for the period specified by the notice. Do not substitute a different campaign’s instructions; verify that the outdoor-parking warning is attached to your VIN and campaign number.

If the notice sets an 80% charging limit
Set the vehicle’s charge target to no more than 80%, or follow the exact method in the notice, until the repair is completed or Volkswagen issues updated instructions. The 80% limit is explicitly part of campaign 93EW in the United States and Transport Canada notice 2026469; it is not established as a universal rule for every ID.4 battery campaign.
If no driving restriction appears
Arrange the dealer inspection promptly and ask the dealer to confirm whether ordinary driving to the appointment is acceptable. The absence of a do-not-drive or park-outside box in the 26V030 filing does not prove that every vehicle is risk-free, that every operating condition is acceptable or that a later notice cannot change the instructions.

Have the VIN, campaign numbers, recall letters and a record of any charging limitation ready. Tell the service adviser that the battery recall is unresolved and ask five specific questions:
- Is this campaign open on my VIN, or has the remedy already been recorded?
- Is the battery health check and software update available now?
- Will the inspection determine whether a cell module must be replaced?
- May I drive the vehicle to the appointment, or should it be transported?
- What parking and charging limits apply until the work is finished?
NHTSA states that covered recall repairs at the manufacturer’s dealership are free. A dealer may need to order parts or wait for campaign instructions, so ask for the expected next step rather than assuming that an appointment automatically means the recall is closed.

Common mistakes that can make the decision unsafe
Relying on the model year alone
Campaign populations are defined by production and VIN data. Two ID.4s from the same model year can have different recall results. Use the VIN lookup, not a forum post or a generic model-year list.
Transferring one campaign’s precautions to another
The 80% charging and outdoor-parking directions associated with 26V028 should not be copied onto 26V030 without confirmation. Conversely, seeing no such advisory in the 26V030 filing is not a reason to ignore a VIN-specific instruction from Volkswagen.
Assuming a software update alone closes the issue
For 26V030, the dealer performs a battery health check and software update, and replaces affected cell modules when the inspection indicates that action. Ask the dealer what was completed and obtain confirmation that the campaign status is closed.

Using a generic device or accessory as a substitute for recall work
A charger, diagnostic scanner or replacement battery module purchased independently does not clear an official recall. The listed remedies are campaign-specific and performed through Volkswagen’s authorized repair network.
Waiting because the car is driving normally
Normal operation does not establish that the recall condition is absent. Keep the campaign open in your records until the authorized dealer documents completion or gives you a current, VIN-specific alternative instruction.
When the answer can change
Recall records and remedy availability are updated over time. A notice that currently permits a trip to the dealer can later acquire a new interim warning, while a pending campaign can move to an available repair. Recheck the VIN and the current official notice immediately before a planned long trip, before charging at home or away from home, and whenever Volkswagen contacts you with revised instructions.
For a U.S. vehicle, use NHTSA and Volkswagen’s lookup pages and follow the dealer’s direction. For a Canadian vehicle, use the applicable Canadian notice and Volkswagen’s Canadian support channel; do not substitute U.S. assumptions for Canadian instructions. As of October 2026, the practical rule remains the same: identify the exact campaign first, then follow its written driving, parking and charging requirements.
