A hybrid’s high-voltage traction battery can show a low charge during normal driving while the gasoline engine and regenerative braking restore energy. That is different from a traction-battery failure, a fully discharged traction battery, or a dead 12-volt auxiliary battery. Any warning that tells you to stop takes priority over an assumption that the car will keep going.
The exact response depends on your make, model, year and market. Toyota’s U.S. owner’s manuals reviewed for the 2025 Tundra Hybrid and Corolla Hybrid and the 2026 Prius and Land Cruiser illustrate the distinctions, but they do not establish identical behavior for every hybrid.

What “low battery” means in a hybrid
Hybrid cars generally have two electrically different batteries:

A low reading on the traction battery is not automatically a breakdown. In Toyota’s 2025 Tundra Hybrid manual, the gasoline engine charges the traction battery, so the vehicle does not need to be plugged into an outside power source. The hybrid control system continually manages that charge cycle.

A battery that is fully discharged, electrically defective or associated with a hybrid-system fault is a different situation. It can prevent the system from entering its operating state or require professional diagnosis. A discharged 12-volt battery can also leave the car apparently dead even when the high-voltage pack still contains energy.
Can you keep driving with a low traction-battery charge?
Usually, a low traction-battery state of charge during ordinary operation does not by itself stop the car. The gasoline engine can provide propulsion and recharge the traction battery, while regenerative braking sends some recovered energy back into the pack. The charge level therefore moves up and down as part of normal hybrid operation.
Do not interpret “low” as permission to ignore every warning, however. The display message, the vehicle’s behavior and the READY indicator determine what you should do. A temporary low-charge message may cause the system to start the engine more often or limit some features while charging takes place. A message identifying a hybrid-system or traction-battery malfunction is a fault instruction, not a routine charge reminder.

What normal low charge can feel like
- The gasoline engine may run when you expected electric-only operation.
- Engine noise can continue while the system rebuilds charge.
- Some electric functions may be temporarily limited until the charge recovers.
Those signs should be interpreted together with the exact wording in your owner’s manual. Do not infer that every hybrid behaves like the models described in Toyota’s manuals.
What happens when the traction battery is fully discharged or fails?
A fully discharged traction battery is not the same as a low state of charge. Toyota’s 2025 Tundra Hybrid manual says that if the traction battery becomes fully discharged and the hybrid system cannot start, the owner should contact a dealer. The manual does not promise that the vehicle can continue driving after a traction-battery failure.
A traction-battery malfunction can also trigger a hybrid-system warning and prevent normal operation. If the car will not enter READY, loses propulsion, or displays a message directing you to stop, move to a safe location if you can do so without taking additional risk and follow the manual’s instructions. Arrange dealer or qualified hybrid-system service rather than trying to repair the high-voltage system at the roadside.

Why a failed traction battery is not a roadside jump-start
The high-voltage pack, its service disconnects and its cables are part of a system that requires model-specific diagnostic equipment and safety procedures. A 12-volt jump-start procedure cannot restore a defective traction battery. Do not open battery covers, remove service plugs or handle orange high-voltage cables in an attempt to make the car run.
Can a hybrid drive with a dead 12-volt battery?
Normally, no—not until the 12-volt system is restored and the hybrid system can start. The auxiliary battery supports the electronics and startup sequence. When it is discharged, the vehicle may have no usable dashboard, may not unlock normally, or may fail to enter READY even though the traction battery itself is not empty.
Toyota’s 2026 Prius owner’s manual describes a jumper-cable procedure using another 12-volt vehicle. It also states that the hybrid system cannot be started by push-starting and recommends dealer inspection as soon as possible after the vehicle starts. Those instructions are model-specific; use your own manual’s connection points, order and precautions, or call roadside assistance.

What not to do with a 12-volt failure
- Do not push-start or tow-start the car unless your manual explicitly provides a safe method; the cited Prius manual specifically says push-starting cannot start its hybrid system.
- Do not guess at a connection point because the battery may be located away from the engine compartment.
- Do not assume a successful restart proves the battery is healthy. Follow the manual’s direction for inspection.
Read the warning message before deciding whether to continue
Warning messages are more important than a general rule about hybrid batteries. Toyota’s 2026 Land Cruiser manual distinguishes between a “Hybrid Battery Low” message, which can prompt charging and temporary feature limits, and specified hybrid-system or traction-battery malfunction messages that require stopping safely and contacting a dealer.
If a message says to stop, stop as soon as it is safe. Continuing because the engine still runs can turn a manageable warning into a loss-of-power or roadside emergency. If the message is unclear, consult the manual for the exact wording and contact the manufacturer’s roadside or dealer support.
The READY indicator tells you whether the hybrid system is enabled
The READY indicator is a practical check before selecting a gear. Toyota’s 2025 Corolla Hybrid manual says the vehicle will not move when READY is off and advises waiting for READY to become steady when starting. Do not treat an illuminated dashboard, a silent engine or a functioning radio as proof that the car is ready to drive.

- Start the vehicle using the normal procedure in your manual.
- Confirm that READY appears steadily.
- If READY does not appear, keep the vehicle stationary and read the displayed message.
- Use the manual’s 12-volt troubleshooting procedure or arrange assistance; do not improvise with high-voltage components.
What to do when a warning appears while you are moving
- Stay in control. Keep steering and braking smoothly and look for a safe place to stop.
- Read the exact message. Note whether it says low battery, hybrid-system malfunction, traction-battery malfunction or something else.
- Follow a stop instruction immediately. Toyota’s 2026 Land Cruiser manual directs drivers to stop safely and contact a dealer for specified hybrid-system and traction-battery malfunctions.
- Do not touch high-voltage hardware. Leave covers, orange cables, connectors and service plugs alone.
- Call for the appropriate help. A 12-volt no-start may call for the model’s approved jumper procedure or roadside assistance; a traction-system warning calls for dealer or qualified hybrid diagnosis.

High-voltage safety is not optional
Toyota’s 2026 Land Cruiser manual warns: “DC and AC high voltage is very dangerous and can cause severe burns and electric shock that may result in death or serious injury.” The same manual warns owners not to touch, disassemble, remove or replace high-voltage parts, cables or connectors.
That warning applies even if the vehicle is switched off. A failed or damaged hybrid system is not an appropriate do-it-yourself battery project. Keep clear of damaged components after a collision or electrical fault and tell emergency responders that the vehicle is a hybrid.
Before using jumper cables or a booster
The cited Toyota procedure discusses jumper cables and another 12-volt vehicle; it does not constitute an endorsement of a particular portable booster. If you use a booster, first confirm that your exact manual permits it and identifies the correct terminals.

- Use only the connection points, cable order and safety checks specified for your model.
- Stop if the vehicle displays a high-voltage or hybrid-system malfunction message.

How the evidence applies to your vehicle

They support the distinction between normal low charge, a failed traction battery and a discharged 12-volt battery, but they do not establish identical procedures for every manufacturer, hybrid architecture, model year or country.
Use the owner’s manual for your exact make, model, year and market as the final authority. Look up the sections covering “hybrid system,” “traction battery,” “12-volt battery,” “READY” and the exact warning text shown on your instrument panel. If those instructions conflict with a generic internet checklist, follow the vehicle manual and the warning message.
