A windshield snow-and-ice cover is a reasonable preventive measure for a parked car: put it on before precipitation starts, then remove it before driving. Treat it as a way to reduce cleanup, not a guarantee against sleet or freezing rain bonding to the glass. If ice still forms, use the vehicle’s defroster or clear it carefully with a scraper.
How to use a windshield cover
Choose a cover sized for your vehicle and secure it according to its instructions before the storm begins. An AstroAI use manual says its cover is intended to protect a parked windshield from snow, ice, frost and rain, but it does not report independent performance tests or establish that a cover will keep glass clear in every sleet or freezing-rain storm. When the precipitation ends, remove the cover before driving. If it has collected slush or ice, handle it in a way that keeps that material from dropping onto the car or into the cabin. The available guidance does not establish a best cover material or attachment style for sleet, so fit and secure attachment matter more than assuming one design will work for every vehicle.
If ice gets onto the windshield anyway
Use the vehicle’s defroster to melt the ice, or manually clear the glass with a plastic ice scraper. In Bulletin 24-NA-164, released August 21, 2024, GM advises drivers not to use the wipers to wear through or clear frost, snow or ice; it recommends letting the defroster melt the buildup or manually clearing the windshield. - Do not bang frozen wipers against the windshield or pull blades off frozen glass; GM warns this can bend or damage the blades and may scratch the windshield. GM Bulletin 24-NA-164
- Scrape carefully around the wiper blades so you do not damage them.
- If your vehicle manual gives different or more specific instructions, follow the guidance for your vehicle.
Clear the rest of the vehicle before driving
A clear windshield alone is not enough. Clear the rear and side windows and mirrors so you have visibility in every direction. Hyundai’s 2025 owner-manual guidance also says to clear snow and ice from the hood and cowl air inlet to help the defroster work and reduce interior fogging. Use washer fluid and heated-wiper features as directed
In below-freezing conditions, use winter-rated washer fluid and warm the windshield before spraying it, following the instructions in your vehicle’s manual. Hyundai’s 2026 manual guidance for applicable vehicles covers front wipers, heavy ice and washer-fluid use. Hyundai: Front Windshield Wipers
