Sometimes—but there is no universal way to tap a factory vehicle camera. It depends on whether that camera provides a documented video output and whether the screen or recorder accepts the same signal. The official installation guidance available here describes a supported analog-camera setup, not a general method for accessing factory backup, surround-view, or driver-assistance camera feeds.
What “tapping” a factory camera involves
Connecting an existing camera to another screen or recorder requires more than finding a wire or connector. The camera must provide a usable output, the receiving device must support its signal, and the installation must account for power and any display trigger. Requirements vary by vehicle, camera system, and receiving device.
Garmin’s RV-IN1501 guidance describes one supported arrangement: up to four analog cameras connect to the compatible stereo using RCA video cables. A reverse signal can trigger a backup-camera view, while a turn signal can trigger a side-camera view. How to check whether your camera can be reused
- Identify the exact equipment. Record the vehicle’s make, model, year and trim, the camera’s function, and the make and model of the intended screen or recorder.
- Look for documented outputs and inputs. Check the vehicle and receiving-device manuals or service information for an explicit camera output and a supported video input. A connector that looks familiar does not prove the signal is compatible.
- Confirm signal, power, and trigger requirements. Verify the camera’s video format and connector, the receiving device’s supported input, how the camera is powered, and whether a reverse or turn-signal trigger is needed. - Check whether the camera is part of a larger safety system. If it supports driver assistance or surround view, consult the manufacturer or a qualified installer before changing wiring. Use vehicle-specific service guidance rather than treating the assembly as a generic video accessory.
- Choose a documented alternative if compatibility is unconfirmed. A separate compatible backup camera may be easier to support than an undocumented factory feed, provided the receiving display accepts that camera’s signal and trigger setup.
When to avoid modifying the factory camera
Some vehicle cameras are integrated into systems beyond showing a rear image. Hyundai’s 2026 NX4 PHEV owner’s manual identifies multiple camera types and locations and warns: “NEVER disassemble the camera sensors or camera sensor assemblies.” That instruction applies to the cited Hyundai model, but it illustrates why camera hardware should be handled according to the specific vehicle’s service guidance. Ford likewise cautions that unapproved modifications, add-ons, accessories, or repairs could affect driver-assistance systems and prevent them from working as designed. Factory camera versus adding a separate camera

What to do if the answer is still unclear
If the manuals do not explicitly confirm a compatible camera output, do not infer one from wire color, connector shape, or an analog-camera example. Ask the vehicle manufacturer, an authorized dealer, or a qualified vehicle-specific installer to assess the exact vehicle and receiving device before altering wiring. A reliable yes-or-no answer requires those details; the general documentation cited here does not establish pinouts, signal levels, proprietary interfaces, or compatibility for a particular vehicle.
