Tesla’s official FAQ does provide a purchase route for a fleet or an individual Cybercab used for commercial purposes: an interested buyer submits a form and a Tesla representative makes contact. That is different from ordering one as a personal car.
Tesla describes Cybercab primarily as purpose-built hardware for its Robotaxi fleet. The company reported that production had started in July 2026, but its production updates do not establish a consumer launch, retail price, delivery date or private-ownership policy. You can request a Tesla Robotaxi trip in limited service areas, yet the app chooses the vehicle; booking a ride does not guarantee a Cybercab.

The buying answer in one sentence
There are currently two documented ways to access a Cybercab: ask Tesla about a commercial purchase, or ride in one through the Robotaxi service when the system assigns it. Tesla has not documented a normal retail order process for a person who wants a Cybercab solely for private transportation.

That wording matters. Tesla’s FAQ does not say that private sales will never happen. It simply does not announce them. The company could change its policy later, but no date, price or consumer configuration is confirmed in the official material available as of October 2026.

What Tesla’s purchase FAQ actually allows
Commercial fleet or individual-vehicle inquiries
On Tesla’s Cybercab Frequently Asked Questions page, the answer to “Can I purchase a Cybercab vehicle?” says: “If you are interested in purchasing a fleet or an individual Cybercab vehicle for commercial purposes, fill out the form and a representative will contact you.”
This creates a commercial inquiry channel with two possible scales:
- A fleet purchase: an organization can ask about acquiring multiple vehicles.
- An individual commercial vehicle: a single Cybercab may also be discussed when it will be used commercially.
The FAQ does not publish a self-service checkout, a public order configurator, a deposit amount, a standard vehicle price, a delivery timetable or eligibility rules. A form submission is therefore an expression of interest, not evidence that every applicant can place an order immediately.
What the FAQ does not establish
The same answer does not describe a path for a private individual buying one as a household car. It also does not state whether Tesla will later offer a personal-use version. You should not turn that silence into a permanent “never,” and you should not describe a commercial inquiry as proof that retail orders are open.
| Access route | What Tesla currently documents | What is not established |
|---|---|---|
| Private personal purchase | No ordinary retail order path is described in the Cybercab FAQ. | Whether Tesla will open consumer sales, and when, is not stated by Tesla’s current FAQ. |
| Commercial purchase | Prospective buyers may submit an inquiry for a fleet or an individual vehicle used for commercial purposes; a representative will contact them. | Public price, contract terms, production allocation, specifications and delivery timing are not stated in the FAQ. |
| Robotaxi ride | Rides can be requested through Tesla’s Robotaxi app in limited service areas. | A rider cannot guarantee that the assigned vehicle will be a Cybercab. |
Why Tesla positions Cybercab as fleet equipment
Production has started, according to Tesla
In its Tesla Q2 2026 Update dated July 22, 2026, Tesla said: “We started production of Cybercab, our purpose-built autonomous EV designed to be the workhorse of our Robotaxi fleet.” The update also said production Cybercab engineering test drives on public roads began during that quarter and that employee rides began at Gigafactory Texas in July.
Those statements show that Tesla had moved beyond a static concept presentation into production and testing activity by that reporting date. They do not, by themselves, mean that vehicles were available for unrestricted public purchase. Production for a company-operated fleet, engineering validation or commercial customers can occur before a retail launch.
Tesla’s earlier volume-production plan
Tesla’s Q1 2026 Update, dated April 22, 2026, said Cybercab was among the products then scheduled for volume production starting in 2026. Tesla also said that, once Cybercab entered production, it expected the vehicle to begin replacing the existing Model Y Robotaxi fleet and to become the fleet’s largest-volume vehicle over time.

“Scheduled” and “expected” describe Tesla’s plan at that time, not a guaranteed delivery schedule for private buyers. The April update explains the intended job of the vehicle: high-volume autonomous service inside Tesla’s Robotaxi operation. It does not announce a consumer trim, steering-wheel configuration for retail use, or a date when an individual could register one for personal driving.
Could a private buyer eventually own one?
What is known
Tesla has acknowledged that an individual Cybercab can be the subject of a commercial purchase inquiry. Tesla has also reported production and public-road engineering tests. Those facts make a future expansion of access conceivable, but they do not create a private-sales program.
What remains open
Tesla’s current Cybercab FAQ and 2026 investor updates do not say:
- when personal-use orders might open;
- whether a retail Cybercab would have the same equipment and software as a fleet vehicle;
- what it would cost;
- which countries or states could receive one;
- whether an owner would need to place it in Tesla’s Robotaxi network; or
- how registration, insurance, servicing and driver-control requirements would work for private ownership.
Because none of those points is confirmed, advertisements or social-media claims promising a personal Cybercab order should not be treated as an official Tesla sales announcement unless they are matched by a Tesla order page or a new Tesla statement.

Where Robotaxi service is listed
Tesla’s Cybercab FAQ says rides are available in limited areas of Austin, Texas. Tesla’s broader Robotaxi support page lists service in limited areas of Austin, Dallas and Houston, Texas, and Miami, Orlando and Tampa, Florida. Service-area availability does not mean every vehicle in those cities is a Cybercab; Tesla’s listed fleet includes both Model Y and Cybercab vehicles.
Booking steps
- Open Tesla’s Robotaxi app.
- Enter a destination that falls inside the service boundary shown by the app.
- Review the estimated fare and wait time.
- Confirm the trip if the estimate and pickup conditions work for you.
- Check the assigned vehicle in the app and at pickup; the assignment is made by Tesla’s service system.
Tesla says pricing may change. The app is therefore the appropriate place to check the current fare, estimated wait, operating availability and whether your specific pickup and destination are accepted. A service listing for a city is not a promise that every address, hour or trip type is supported.
Why a booking may use a Model Y instead
Tesla says the vehicle assigned depends on availability and the number of riders in the group. If the system has a Model Y available for your party and a Cybercab is not, the trip can be fulfilled by the Model Y. You cannot select “Cybercab” as a guaranteed vehicle type based solely on the city or on the fact that the trip was requested through the Robotaxi app.

Commercial buyers: what the published information does and does not tell you
A company considering the commercial inquiry should treat the Tesla form as the starting point for a sales conversation, not a published specification sheet. Tesla’s public FAQ confirms the inquiry channel but does not disclose a standard transaction structure.
Before contacting Tesla, a prospective operator would need to clarify its own requirements, such as the number of vehicles, intended operating location, commercial use case and desired timing. Tesla’s public materials do not state which of those factors determine acceptance or allocation, so they should be presented as questions for the representative rather than assumptions about Tesla’s policy.
The representative would also need to explain matters that are not covered by the FAQ: final vehicle configuration, autonomy or supervision requirements applicable in the operating jurisdiction, software access, charging arrangements, maintenance responsibilities, insurance expectations, data handling, warranty coverage and delivery milestones. None of those terms should be inferred from Tesla’s statement that Cybercab is designed as the workhorse of its Robotaxi fleet.
How to interpret Tesla’s 2026 timeline
| Date | Tesla statement | What it means for availability |
|---|---|---|
| April 22, 2026 | Cybercab was listed among products scheduled for volume production starting in 2026; Tesla expected it to replace existing Model Y Robotaxis and become the fleet’s largest-volume vehicle over time. | A stated production and fleet strategy, not a promise of retail orders or deliveries. |
| July 22, 2026 | Tesla reported that Cybercab production had started, with production engineering test drives on public roads and employee rides at Gigafactory Texas in July. | Evidence of production and testing activity; it does not announce unrestricted consumer sales. |
| October 2026 status | The current FAQ still describes commercial purchase inquiries and Robotaxi rides, without a personal-use order process. | Private retail availability remains unconfirmed. |
Which access path fits your goal?
If you want a personal car
There is no confirmed Tesla retail order path to follow today. Monitor Tesla’s official Cybercab FAQ, vehicle-order pages and investor announcements for a clear statement that private orders are open. Until such a statement appears, do not pay a third party claiming to reserve a personal Cybercab.
If you operate a business
Use Tesla’s commercial inquiry form and describe whether you are asking about a fleet or one vehicle for commercial use. Ask the Tesla representative to put pricing, delivery, operating requirements and support terms in writing, because the current FAQ does not publish them.

If you mainly want to experience one
Use the Robotaxi app in a listed service area and check the vehicle assignment after booking. Austin is the location specifically identified by Tesla’s Cybercab FAQ; the broader support page also lists limited service in Dallas, Houston, Miami, Orlando and Tampa. Plan for the possibility that your trip will use a Model Y instead.
What would count as confirmation of private sales?
A genuine retail launch would normally require more than a production photograph or a ride becoming available. Look for an official Tesla page that lets a private customer configure or order a vehicle, a published consumer price or reservation process, stated delivery regions and terms explaining how the vehicle may be used. Until Tesla publishes those details, the most accurate description is that Cybercab is in production for its autonomous fleet, commercially purchasable only through an inquiry, and rideable only where Tesla assigns one through Robotaxi service.
