For passenger flights under current U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) guidance, a rechargeable battery up to 100 Wh is generally allowed, 101–160 Wh requires airline approval, and a battery above 160 Wh is forbidden on a passenger aircraft. Most full-size e-bike batteries exceed the 160 Wh ceiling. Train policies are set by each operator: some UK services require the battery to remain fitted to the bike and prohibit spares, Eurostar does not allow separately carried lithium e-bike batteries, and Amtrak applies whole-bike limits such as weight, tire width and motor power.
Read the battery label, identify the exact route and operator, and obtain written approval where required before you travel. Permission to carry the bicycle does not automatically permit a detached battery.

The FAA page carrying these thresholds was updated October 2, 2026. It covers U.S. passenger baggage and warns that an airline, the Transportation Security Administration, or the destination country may impose stricter requirements. International flights also operate under the International Civil Aviation Organization framework and airline dangerous-goods procedures, so the FAA table is not a guarantee of acceptance.

Why most e-bike batteries are difficult to fly with
An e-bike battery’s capacity is normally far above the small-battery limits used for phones and cameras. A typical removable pack may therefore fall into the 101–160 Wh approval band or, more commonly, exceed 160 Wh. Removing the pack from the frame does not reduce its electrical rating and does not create an exception to the 160 Wh prohibition.
Spare and removed batteries go in the cabin
A battery carried separately from the bike is treated as a spare lithium battery. Under the FAA baseline, spares cannot go in checked baggage. Place the battery in your carry-on bag, prevent movement, and cover or otherwise protect exposed terminals so metal objects cannot short them. An airline may require additional packaging, a fire-resistant pouch, or a different transport arrangement.
Damaged, defective or recalled batteries
Do not fly with a battery that is swollen, cracked, leaking, overheating, sparking, or subject to a safety recall. FAA guidance says a dangerous battery must not be carried aboard unless it has been removed or otherwise made safe. If you are unsure about its condition, contact the airline’s dangerous-goods desk before traveling; airport staff can refuse a battery at check-in or security.

How to check your battery’s watt-hours
Find the battery label or the manufacturer’s documentation. Look for a number followed by “Wh.” If Wh is not printed, calculate it from the voltage and amp-hour rating:
Watt-hours (Wh) = volts (V) × amp-hours (Ah)
If the label uses milliamp-hours (mAh), divide by 1,000 first:
Wh = V × (mAh ÷ 1,000)
For example, the FAA’s calculation example is a 12 V, 8 Ah battery: 12 × 8 = 96 Wh. Keep a photograph of the label and a copy of the specification sheet. The 2026 passenger guidance from the International Air Transport Association says an operator may refuse carriage when staff cannot verify the watt-hour rating from the battery or its documentation.

Check the exact configuration
- Record the rating of every battery you intend to carry; do not assume two smaller packs are treated as one compliant pack or that one large pack can be split into smaller cases.
- Note whether the battery will remain installed in the bicycle, travel as a spare, or be shipped separately. Each configuration can have different handling requirements.
- Ask about the airline’s limit on the number of spare batteries, approval form, packaging and carry-on weight. Those details are carrier-specific.
What to do before booking a flight
- Identify the operating carrier and all flight segments. A codeshare may be operated by a different airline with different dangerous-goods rules.
- Read the battery label and calculate Wh if needed. Save the calculation and documentation on your phone and in paper form.
- Classify the battery. At 0–100 Wh, confirm ordinary carry-on handling; at 101–160 Wh, request airline approval; above 160 Wh, arrange a different transport method because it cannot travel on a passenger aircraft under the FAA limit.
- Ask the airline’s dangerous-goods or special-assistance team in writing. Include the battery make, model, Wh rating, whether it is installed, and your flight numbers. Keep the approval reference.
- Plan the bicycle separately. The airline may accept a bicycle as sports equipment while refusing its battery. Ask about disassembly, case dimensions, weight, fees and whether pedals, wheels or tools may be packed in the case.
- Pack for the approved configuration. A removed battery belongs in the cabin, with terminals protected. Do not put a spare lithium battery in checked luggage.
- Reconfirm shortly before departure. Rules and aircraft assignments can change. Arrive early enough for a manual inspection and do not rely on an informal phone answer without a record.
Can I take the e-bike battery on a train?
There is no universal train rule. The operator, route, train type and bicycle service determine whether an e-bike and its battery may board. Check the cycle policy for the exact service, not merely the national network’s general statement.
UK National Rail and operator guidance
National Rail says road-legal e-bikes can travel on most trains, subject to each train company’s cycle policy. In the UK road-legal category, pedal assistance is limited to a maximum continuous rated motor output of 250 W and must cut out above 15.5 mph. Some services allow only folding e-bikes or require a reservation, particularly where cycle spaces are limited.

- Do not charge the e-bike on the train.
- Leave the battery fitted to the bike. The exception is where removing it is part of a folding-bike design.
- Do not bring a spare e-bike battery.
- Do not travel with an e-bike whose battery is damaged.
- Use the designated cycle storage area and never lock the bicycle to the train.
These are operational safety instructions, not a substitute for the individual operator’s terms. A train company can impose stricter limits, require a reservation or refuse a bicycle when the service is full.
Eurostar
Eurostar states that lithium e-bike batteries carried separately from the e-bike are not allowed onboard. Its bicycle-packing conditions also apply; a bike that does not meet the required packing format can be refused. Therefore, putting the battery in a backpack while the packed bicycle travels as luggage is not a workaround. Confirm whether your exact Eurostar service accepts the bicycle, what case or dimensions it requires, and how the battery must be handled before purchasing the ticket.
Amtrak
Amtrak accepts qualifying e-bikes on eligible services, subject to bicycle-service availability, reservations and the station’s loading method. Its published equipment criteria include all of the following:

Those limits apply to the whole bicycle, not just its battery. Check that the route offers the bicycle service, reserve the space if required, and ask the station how the bike is loaded. A train that accepts an e-bike may still reject it if the bike exceeds the weight, tire or motor specifications.

Transport rules often turn on the battery’s location:
- Installed battery: Some rail operators permit the battery only when it remains mounted on the bike. The bicycle still has to meet the operator’s size, weight and safety requirements.
- Removed or spare battery: Airlines generally require this to stay in the cabin, with protected terminals; some rail operators prohibit it altogether.
- Battery shipped as freight: A passenger-baggage permission does not authorize parcel or cargo shipment. Freight carriers use separate dangerous-goods rules and documentation.
Never infer that a detached battery is acceptable because the frame is accepted. Ask the operator two separate questions: “May I bring this bicycle?” and “May I bring this battery in this configuration?”

Preparing the bicycle for rail or air travel
Use only the packing format the operator accepts
Some services require a reservation in a dedicated cycle rack; others require a folded bicycle or a case. A travel case can protect the frame and satisfy a packing requirement where the carrier permits a packed bicycle, but it cannot override a battery prohibition or a Wh limit. Do not hide a prohibited battery inside the case.
Make the battery and bike easy to inspect
- Keep the rating label visible or carry the manufacturer’s documentation.
- Use a non-conductive cover or terminal caps and prevent the battery from moving in the bag.
- Do not pack loose metal tools, keys or other objects against battery contacts.
- Do not attempt improvised rewiring, discharge, puncture or modification to evade a carrier limit.
- Carry proof of any reservation or written approval with your identification.
Allow time for loading and screening
Airports may send an e-bike to a special-baggage inspection point, while stations may require you to use a particular carriage or boarding ramp. Arrive early, keep the battery accessible, and be prepared for staff to apply a stricter local rule than the general policy you read online.

When permission is refused at the airport or station
- Ask which rule caused the refusal: Wh rating, missing approval, damaged condition, packaging, bicycle dimensions or route eligibility.
- Show the battery label, calculation and written correspondence without arguing that another operator allowed it.
- Do not leave a lithium battery unattended, place it in checked luggage, or attempt to conceal it.
- If the battery is over the aircraft limit or prohibited by the train operator, arrange a lawful ground, cargo or courier option that accepts lithium batteries.
- For a damaged or recalled pack, stop using it and contact the manufacturer or a qualified battery service rather than attempting a field repair.
Final pre-trip checklist
- Exact airline or train operator identified for every segment.
- Battery Wh rating read from the label or calculated from V × Ah.
- Installed-versus-spare configuration confirmed in writing.
- Airline approval obtained for a 101–160 Wh battery, if applicable.
- Battery condition checked; no swelling, damage, recall or overheating.
- Carry-on packaging and terminal protection prepared for air travel.
- Bicycle weight, tire width, motor rating, speed and dimensions checked against the train policy.
- Reservations, cycle spaces, packing case and station loading instructions confirmed.
- Destination-country and connecting-carrier rules reviewed, not just the first carrier’s policy.
