No. Tesla’s Robotaxi FAQ says pets may not ride in a Robotaxi. The only stated exception is for a disabled rider traveling with a qualifying service animal. A carrier, leash, harness, small size, or advance request does not make an ordinary pet eligible.
The short answer
Tesla’s published rule separates ordinary pets from service animals. Its Robotaxi FAQ states: “No. Pets may not ride in a Robotaxi. However, disabled riders are permitted to bring service animals on their Robotaxi ride.” Tesla’s Service Animal Policy uses similarly firm language: “Small Service Animals are always welcome to join disabled riders in our Robotaxis. No other animals are permitted in a Robotaxi.”

That means a dog, cat, rabbit, bird, or other companion animal cannot ride simply because it is calm, small, house-trained, or placed in a carrier. The exception is tied to the rider’s disability and the animal’s trained disability-related work or tasks, not to the animal’s breed, size, equipment, or behavior.

Why a carrier does not make an ordinary pet eligible
Many transportation policies distinguish between an animal loose in the cabin and one secured in a crate. Tesla’s Robotaxi rule is broader: it says no other animals are permitted. The restriction is about the animal’s eligibility, not whether the animal is contained.

Therefore, do not book a ride expecting a carrier to solve the problem. The same applies to a harness, tether, blanket, muzzle, or request made in advance. Those items can help secure an animal that is already permitted, but they do not turn an ordinary companion animal into a service animal.
Trying to board with a prohibited pet can result in a canceled trip or other action under Tesla’s rider rules and Robotaxi terms. If you need to travel with a non-service pet, arrange transportation whose operator explicitly accepts pets before you leave for the pickup point.
What Tesla means by a service animal
Disability-related work or tasks
Tesla defines a service animal as an animal recognized by state or federal law and trained to work or perform tasks for an individual with a disability. The definition focuses on the animal’s trained function. Examples could include tasks directly connected to a person’s disability, but Tesla’s policy does not provide a separate list of tasks in the material published with the rule.

No vest, tag, or paperwork is required by the written policy
Tesla says an eligible service animal does not need a vest, tag, or other special identification. The rider also does not have to provide proof to Tesla. This does not remove the requirement that the animal genuinely meet the policy’s definition; it only means the written policy does not require documentation or visible equipment as a condition of boarding.
Robotaxi Support may ask the rider to confirm that the animal is required because of a disability and to identify the trained tasks it performs. Answer those questions accurately. A lack of a vest is not, by itself, a reason for an eligible service animal to be excluded, while a vest or certificate does not make a non-qualifying pet eligible.
The policy expressly mentions small service animals
The service-animal policy says that small service animals are always welcome to join disabled riders. Because that wording specifically uses “small,” do not assume that every animal, regardless of size or practical fit, is covered without checking the current policy and ride conditions. The documentation supplied for this rule does not promise eligibility for a larger animal.
How to plan a Robotaxi trip with an eligible service animal
Check whether Robotaxi serves your trip
Tesla’s support information lists limited service areas rather than nationwide coverage. The listed cities are Miami, Orlando, and Tampa in Florida, and Austin, Dallas, and Houston in Texas. Tesla says the Robotaxi app shows the service area based on the rider’s location, and operating hours vary by area. Service boundaries and hours can change, so check the app on the day you need the ride instead of relying on an old city list.

Request the ride in the app
- Open the Robotaxi app and enter your pickup location.
- Enter a destination that the app shows as being within the available service area.
- Review the displayed estimated fare and wait time.
- Confirm the ride only after checking that the pickup, destination, and current service availability are correct.
The booking flow does not create an exception for an ordinary pet. If you are traveling with a service animal, keep the animal’s status and required tasks clear in case Robotaxi Support contacts you. If the app does not offer the trip, do not assume that calling ahead will expand the operating area or authorize a prohibited animal.
Secure the service animal for the whole ride
Tesla asks riders to secure a service animal for the duration of the trip. The policy lists a leash, tether, harness, crate, carrier, or another suitable means. Choose equipment that keeps the animal under control without obstructing the vehicle’s seats, doors, sensors, or another passenger’s space.
A carrier is therefore relevant only after the animal qualifies as a permitted service animal. It is a safety and containment option, not an eligibility loophole. Bring the restraint with you; the policy does not say that Robotaxi vehicles supply crates, carriers, or harnesses.
Cleaning, damage, and possible fees
Tesla says it will not assess a fee for hair or shedding alone from a service animal. That protection does not cover every type of cleanup. The company may charge repair or cleaning fees when the service animal causes damage or creates a mess. Tesla’s Robotaxi Terms of Service also allow reasonable fees for damage, litter, or soiling.

Keep the animal secured, prevent scratching or chewing, and clean up any avoidable mess before ending the trip. A fee dispute is different from the animal’s eligibility: an eligible service animal remains permitted, but the rider can still be responsible for physical damage or unusual cleaning.
If a trip is canceled because of the animal, or if you believe an improper cleaning charge was applied, Tesla’s Service Animal Policy directs riders to report the issue through the Robotaxi app or website. Save the trip details and any fee information so support can identify the ride.

Do not bring the pet to a Robotaxi pickup hoping the vehicle will make an exception. Tesla’s published wording leaves no ordinary-pet exception for a carrier, a small dog, a quiet cat, or a pre-arranged request.

- Use your own vehicle if that is practical and safe.
- Arrange a taxi, rideshare, shuttle, or other provider whose current policy explicitly accepts pets.
- Ask the provider about carrier, leash, size, cleaning, and advance-notice requirements before booking.
- For a veterinary or boarding appointment, confirm the return trip as well; a provider that accepts pets on one leg may have different vehicle or driver rules on another.
Because pet-transport policies differ by city, company, vehicle, and driver, verify the local operator’s rules directly. Do not infer permission from a provider’s general accessibility policy or from the fact that another autonomous vehicle service allows pets.

Common mistakes that can derail the trip
Assuming “service animal” means any emotional-support or companion animal
Tesla’s stated definition requires legal recognition and trained work or tasks for a person with a disability. Comfort, attachment, or a doctor’s recommendation alone may not establish that status under the policy. Use the applicable legal definition rather than a casual label.
Believing paperwork is mandatory
Tesla’s written policy says no tag, vest, special identification, or proof is required. Buying or displaying a certificate will not substitute for the underlying eligibility requirements.
Assuming the app’s availability is permanent
The listed Florida and Texas cities are an operating snapshot, not a guarantee of service at every address or hour. The app determines whether a particular pickup and destination are inside the displayed service area and shows the current wait estimate.

Leaving the animal unsecured
Even an eligible service animal must be secured for the ride. Bring a leash, tether, harness, crate, carrier, or another effective restraint and use it throughout the trip.
A practical pre-ride checklist
- Confirm that the animal is a qualifying service animal accompanying a disabled rider, rather than an ordinary pet.
- Check the Robotaxi app for the exact pickup, destination, service boundary, operating hours, fare estimate, and wait time.
- Have an appropriate restraint ready for the entire ride.
- Keep the animal from damaging, littering, or soiling the vehicle.
- Be prepared to explain the disability-related tasks the animal performs if Robotaxi Support asks.
- If the ride is canceled or a cleaning fee appears, report the issue through the Robotaxi app or website.
Bottom line for Tesla Robotaxi passengers
An ordinary pet cannot ride in a Tesla Robotaxi, even in a carrier. Tesla permits a qualifying service animal accompanying a disabled rider, does not require a vest or proof under its written policy, and asks that the animal be secured. Check the Robotaxi app for current city coverage and hours before making plans, because the service is limited and operational details can change.
