How fast did the Sledgehammer go?
On October 26, 1988, John Lingenfelter drove Project Sledgehammer to a reported 254.76 mph at the Transportation Research Center in Ohio. Callaway Cars described the run as a world closed-course speed record; the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) also reports the speed, date, venue and driver. The headline’s 255 mph rounds 254.76 mph.
This was a run on a closed-course oval, not a public-road speed. The evidence supports the reported run and its circumstances; it does not establish an independently documented standardized record sanction.
Was it a stock 1988 Corvette?
No. Project Sledgehammer was a unique record build based on the C4 Corvette. Its reported output—880 hp and 772 lb-ft of torque—belonged to this one-off project, not to a stock 1988 Corvette or every Callaway Corvette.

| Version | What it was | Reported output or production |
|---|---|---|
| Project Sledgehammer | One-off record car built from a 1988 C4 Corvette | 880 hp and 772 lb-ft, as reported by IMSA in 2021 |
| 1988 B2K Callaway Twin Turbo | Dealer-orderable Callaway engine option | 382 hp and 565 lb-ft, according to the National Corvette Museum |
| B2K production, 1987–1991 | Callaway Corvettes built with the B2K option | 510 cars, according to the National Corvette Museum |
The B2K figures describe a separate dealer-orderable package, not the Sledgehammer’s record configuration. The National Corvette Museum identifies B2K as an engine option offered through Chevrolet dealers.
What made the Sledgehammer so powerful?
IMSA describes a blueprinted, dry-sump 5.7-liter Chevrolet Performance small-block V8 with forged components and two Turbonetics turbochargers. Its account gives 22 psi of boost and reports peak output of 880 hp at 6,250 rpm and 772 lb-ft at 5,250 rpm.

- Tampo-printed redline tires.
- Molded in white and transparent red with chrome plated parts and soft black tires. Paint and glue required(not included).
The record-run car used a Doug Nash transmission; IMSA notes that the car’s later configuration used a ZF six-speed. Hot Rod also reports a strengthened Bowtie block, forged crank and pistons, custom intercoolers and bodywork shaped for the high-speed objective. These are descriptions in published accounts, not results from independent testing.
Was the 255-mph Corvette street legal?
Use “roadgoing” or “street-oriented” with care rather than treating the car’s legality as universal. IMSA calls the Sledgehammer street-legal and says it was driven from Connecticut to the Ohio test venue. The same account says the record configuration had no emissions controls. The available sources do not establish its legal status in every jurisdiction or whether it is road-legal today.

Why the distinction matters
The Sledgehammer’s story is not that a normal 1988 Corvette could reach 255 mph. It is that Callaway created a single, extensively modified C4 for a closed-course speed attempt, while the separate B2K package could be ordered through Chevrolet dealers. Keeping those cars distinct makes the remarkable number meaningful without attributing it to a production Corvette.
