Can You Add Android Auto to Your Car with a Raspberry Pi and Touchscreen?

A Raspberry Pi touchscreen can support an unofficial head-unit emulator project, but Google’s supported Android Auto setup requires a compatible car or aftermarket stereo. Here’s what to check before building.

You can build a Raspberry Pi touchscreen project intended to emulate an Android Auto head unit, but it is an unofficial, experimental route—not a Google-supported Android Auto installation. Google’s documented setup uses an Android phone connected to a compatible car or aftermarket stereo. A Raspberry Pi board and display alone do not make a compatible receiver.

What Android Auto officially supports

Google describes Android Auto as a driver-optimized app experience for an Android phone paired with a compatible car or aftermarket stereo. The phone connects to that receiver, and supported apps provide interfaces designed for use in the car. See Google’s Android Auto overview.

Google’s setup guidance distinguishes wired and wireless connections, with different phone and connection requirements. Compatibility depends on the exact vehicle or stereo: check the manufacturer’s information for your model rather than assuming that a USB port means Android Auto is supported. See Google’s Android Auto setup and compatibility guidance.

What a Raspberry Pi touchscreen build involves

A DIY setup combines a Raspberry Pi, a display, software that attempts to emulate a head unit, and the vehicle-specific work needed to mount and integrate it. The touchscreen is only one component; it does not turn the Pi into an officially compatible receiver.

Choose a display and check the connector

Raspberry Pi Touch Display 2 is designed for interactive projects including dashboards and entertainment systems. It comes in 5-inch, 7-inch, and 10-inch versions, and the supported connections and compatible boards vary by size. Review the current Touch Display 2 product information before selecting a screen.

For a Raspberry Pi 5 paired with the 5-inch or 7-inch Touch Display 2, Raspberry Pi specifies the supplied 22-way-to-15-way Standard-Mini flat flexible cable. Confirm the cable and board combination for the particular display you choose using the Touch Display 2 documentation. The Raspberry Pi 5’s listed interfaces and USB-C power specification describe the board; they do not establish that Pi 5 is required by OpenAuto or that it will work reliably in a particular car. Understand what OpenAuto establishes

OpenAuto describes itself as an Android Auto head-unit emulator based on aasdk and Qt, and lists Raspberry Pi 3 among its target platforms. Its README says the project is not certified by Google, warns that it may not work as expected, and states, “Do not use while driving.” Those are project disclosures, not evidence of compatibility with current Android Auto releases, current phones, or Raspberry Pi 5.

A Raspberry Pi Official Magazine article also discussed resource and video-decoding challenges. In that article, OpenAuto author Michal Szwaj said, “I cannot recommend you install OpenAuto in your car just yet.” That is a historical statement from the article, not a current assessment of performance; the article is available at Raspberry Pi Official Magazine.

Choose between a compatible stereo and a DIY emulator

Consideration Compatible aftermarket Android Auto stereo Raspberry Pi and emulator
Compatibility Use a stereo listed as compatible by its manufacturer; Google’s documented model is a compatible car or aftermarket stereo connected to an Android phone. OpenAuto is not Google-certified, and current compatibility with phones, Android Auto releases, and Raspberry Pi 5 is not established.
What you assemble A receiver selected for the vehicle and installed with the required fitment and connections. A Pi, compatible display and cable, emulator software, mounting, and vehicle integration. Exact requirements depend on the build.
Display fit Depends on the receiver and vehicle fitment. Depends on screen size, mounting position, visibility, touch needs, board compatibility, and connector.
Audio and vehicle controls Check the receiver’s support and installation requirements for your vehicle. How calls, microphone, speakers, steering-wheel controls, and a reverse camera work is build-specific and is not established by the cited project sources.
Reliability Compatibility information comes from the vehicle or stereo manufacturer. Do not assume dependable in-car operation: the project itself disclaims certification and warns that it may not work as expected.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Vehicle integration is the unresolved part

The cited documentation does not provide a universal parts list or validated wiring plan for putting a Raspberry Pi in a car. Power conversion and shutdown behavior, audio routing, microphone placement, mounting, enclosure, and any connections to vehicle controls all depend on the specific vehicle and build. A Pi’s ordinary board power specification is not, on its own, an automotive power or safety design.

Before choosing the DIY route, determine how the screen will be secured and positioned, how audio and calls will reach the car’s speakers, and whether any vehicle controls or camera need to be retained. Do not treat a display working on a desk as proof that the complete installation is suitable for use in a moving car.

A practical decision path

  1. Check the official route first. Look up Android Auto support for your exact car or stereo with its manufacturer, and confirm whether your intended wired or wireless connection meets Google’s requirements.
  2. If considering a Pi, verify the hardware combination. Choose the display size and board together, then confirm the connector and cable in Raspberry Pi’s documentation. Do not assume Raspberry Pi 5 is required by OpenAuto.
  3. Review the software’s limits before building. Read OpenAuto’s current project notes and treat its emulator description as a community project claim, not a promise of present-day compatibility.
  4. Plan vehicle integration separately. Resolve power, mounting, audio, microphone, and controls for the particular car; the project and product pages cited here do not supply a universal in-car installation recipe.
