The practical answer depends on distance, freight and trailer weight, axle configuration, weather, speed, terrain, charging access and the reserve a fleet requires.
In 2026, Tesla lists a Semi with an estimated 500-mile Long Range configuration, while Volvo has announced a long-distance FH Aero Electric with up to 600 km (373 miles) of range. Those are manufacturer figures under different conditions, not an apples-to-apples independent test. Route planning must treat them as starting points rather than promises.

What “long haul” means for an electric truck
A long-haul tractor normally spends most of its day on motorways or interstates, often covering hundreds of miles with a trailer at high gross weight. A battery-electric truck can be suitable when its usable range, charging stops and legal weight fit that duty cycle. It is a poor fit when a route exceeds the truck’s practical range with no compatible charger, or when charging would extend a driver’s legally available duty window.

Current range and charging figures
The following specifications come from manufacturer product pages or announcements. They should not be read as a comparative road test.
| Vehicle or configuration | Published range | Weight or battery information | Charging information | Status and use context |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tesla Semi Standard Range (United States) | Estimated 325 miles | 82,000 lb gross combination weight; curb weight listed below 20,000 lb | Basecharger up to 120 kW; Tesla lists up to 60% range recovery in four hours | Manufacturer product page says deliveries start in 2026 |
| Tesla Semi Long Range (United States) | Estimated 500 miles | 82,000 lb gross combination weight; 23,000 lb listed curb weight | Megacharger up to 1.2 MW; Tesla lists up to 60% range recovery in 30 minutes. Basecharger figures are also listed above. | Manufacturer estimate, not an independently measured fleet result |
| Volvo FH Aero Electric long-distance model | Up to 600 km (about 373 miles) announced | Eight batteries and 780 kWh installed capacity; a supporting tag axle is described for battery mass and weight distribution | Volvo says the truck is adapted to MCS. A 2026 range announcement lists 700 kW MCS charging and approximately 50 minutes from 20% to 80%. | Announced in 2025; Volvo said orders would start in Q2 2026 and that rollout would be stepwise by market |
| Volvo VNR Electric, Canadian six-battery configurations | Up to 275 miles | 565 kWh installed and 452 kWh usable capacity; six-battery 6×2 and 6×4 versions | With a 250 kW charger, Volvo gives 90 minutes to 90% | Volvo characterizes these configurations as fitting local delivery, not as a universal long-haul specification |
The Tesla figures are based on 82,000 lb gross combination weight, 55 mph, 20°C, flat ground, a specified tandem-axle aerodynamic kit and a CARB-compliant dry van. Tesla also warns that tire choice, roof fairing and trailer configuration can have a large effect on projected consumption. The listed energy-consumption estimate is 1.7 kWh per mile, with up to 800 kW of drive power.
The FH Aero Electric figures are announced specifications. Confirm the exact vehicle, order status, certification and charger availability in the operating country before assigning freight to it. The Canadian VNR page is geography- and configuration-specific; its numbers should not be generalized to every market or battery option.

How far can an electric semi go fully loaded?
There is no single fully loaded distance. “Fully loaded” describes freight weight, while the published figure usually describes a particular gross combination weight and test setup. A tractor pulling a heavy, poorly streamlined trailer in cold, hilly conditions can consume substantially more energy than the same tractor on a flat route with an aerodynamic dry van.
Use the manufacturer estimate as the upper planning reference, then apply a route-specific reserve. Include the outbound leg, expected detours, terminal movements, congestion, weather and a charging-site fallback. A 500-mile estimate does not automatically make a 500-mile dispatch safe: arriving at zero usable energy is not an acceptable operating plan, and a charger may be occupied or operating below its headline power.

Payload: does the battery reduce what you can haul?
Battery mass can reduce available payload, but the amount cannot be calculated by subtracting a published tractor curb weight from an 82,000 lb combination limit. The legal and practical payload depends on the tractor, trailer tare, axle ratings, wheelbase, load distribution, bridge formulas and the rules in each jurisdiction.
For example, Tesla lists 23,000 lb curb weight for the Long Range Semi and an 82,000 lb gross combination weight. Those two numbers do not establish the legal freight allowance because the trailer and equipment also consume weight, and axle limits may be reached before the combination limit.
Volvo’s announced FH Aero Electric design illustrates one engineering response: a supporting tag axle can help carry battery mass and distribute weight when pulling heavy trailers. Whether that arrangement preserves the payload a carrier needs depends on local axle rules and the specific tractor and trailer specification.
Before buying, obtain a certified weight ticket or engineering weight estimate for the complete combination: tractor with standard equipment, batteries, fifth wheel, fluids, driver allowance, trailer and reefer equipment if applicable. Then test the heaviest legal freight pattern, not only an average load. A truck that works for dense freight may be weight-limited, while a volumetric load may reach trailer capacity before the truck reaches its gross limit.

How long does it take to charge an electric semi?
Charging time is a curve, not a fixed number. A charger may deliver its rated power only during part of the session; power usually tapers as the battery approaches a high state of charge. The time also changes with battery temperature, starting state of charge, battery size, site sharing and the truck’s charge-acceptance limit.
Tesla lists a Megacharger rated up to 1.2 MW and says the Long Range Semi can recover up to 60% of range in 30 minutes. It also lists a 120 kW Basecharger and up to 60% range recovery in four hours. Tesla Support cautions: “The actual charging rate depends on several factors such as your battery level, battery temperature and if another truck is charging at the same Megacharger.” Treat both times as manufacturer claims under suitable conditions, not a guaranteed driver break.
Volvo’s April 2026 product-range announcement lists 700 kW MCS charging and approximately 50 minutes for a 20% to 80% session. That window is useful for planning because it avoids charging from empty to full, but the stated time still belongs to the specified truck, charger and conditions. Confirm whether a planned public site can sustain that power and whether the connector, software and payment access are compatible.
For dispatch, match charging to a stop the driver already needs for a legally permitted break, inspection or loading activity. Build a second option when the primary site has limited stalls, a queue or a truck already sharing the power cabinet. A charger’s nameplate rating is not the same as the energy delivered to your truck during the entire stop.
A practical route-planning method
- Define the duty cycle. Record one-way and daily miles, return-to-base requirements, detours, delivery windows, average and maximum freight weight, trailer type, cruising speed and the reserve your safety policy requires.
- Choose the exact truck configuration. Identify battery option, axle arrangement, drive-axle ratio, cab and roof fairing, tire specification, fifth-wheel position and any reefer or auxiliary loads. Do not plan from a model name alone.
- Check legal weights. Calculate complete-combination tare and axle loading for the jurisdictions crossed. Verify bridge-formula limits, seasonal restrictions and any local rules affecting a tag axle or heavier electric tractor.
- Model energy use by segment. Include elevation, prevailing wind, temperature, road speed, traffic and trailer aerodynamics. Use conservative assumptions for winter and headwinds, and add energy for terminal queues and accessory loads.
- Map compatible charging. Confirm connector standard, truck clearance, pull-through geometry, power level, operating hours, authentication, payment, reservation rules and the number of usable stalls. A passenger-car site is not automatically suitable for a tractor-trailer.
- Schedule charging in the operating window. Select a starting and target state of charge that leaves a recovery option if the next stop is busy or derated. Allow time for positioning, cable handling and possible queueing in addition to the advertised charge time.
- Validate with a pilot. Run representative loads over the route in more than one season. Record energy per mile, arrival state of charge, dwell time, charger availability and payload outcome, then revise the dispatch model.
What reduces range in real operation?
- Speed: aerodynamic drag rises quickly with speed, so a truck tested at 55 mph may use more energy at a higher cruise setting.
- Temperature: cold weather can reduce battery performance and add cabin or battery-heating demand; heat can also affect charging power.
- Terrain and wind: long grades and headwinds raise consumption, while a downhill section may recover only part of the energy used climbing.
- Tires and fairings: rolling resistance, roof-fairing height and alignment with the trailer alter the aerodynamic load. Tesla specifically identifies tire and roof-fairing selection as significant variables.
- Trailer design: gap, side skirts, refrigeration equipment, roof height and cargo shape affect drag. Changing trailers can invalidate a route model built around a dry van.
- Auxiliary demand: refrigeration, cab climate control, power take-off equipment and long idling periods consume energy that is not represented by miles alone.
- Charging-site sharing: another truck using the same Megacharger or power cabinet can reduce the rate available to your vehicle.
Is the charging network ready for long haul?
Infrastructure is expanding, but a project announcement is not proof that any arbitrary route is covered. The U.S. Department of Energy announced a $68 million investment on January 15, 2025, for high-capacity medium- and heavy-duty charging projects aimed in part at long-haul use cases exceeding 500 miles per day. One described project includes 10 pull-through MCS-compatible stalls, solar canopies and 3 MW of battery storage. Storage and on-site generation can help where the utility connection cannot immediately supply truck-scale power.

Those projects show the direction of the market, not a completed nationwide network or guaranteed access for a carrier. Check each corridor for construction status, truck-usable geometry, uptime, reservation policy and the electrical service needed for simultaneous charging. A route may have enough theoretical energy capacity but still fail operationally if one critical site is closed or incompatible.
Long-distance tractors versus regional electric trucks
Not every electric truck is intended for the same work. Volvo describes the Canadian VNR Electric six-battery 6×2 and 6×4 as suitable for local delivery, with up to 275 miles of range and 565 kWh installed capacity. Its 452 kWh usable figure and 250 kW charging example are relevant to regional planning, but they should not be presented as the capability of Volvo’s announced long-distance FH Aero Electric.
Regional operations often return to a depot each night, making a lower-power overnight charger practical and reducing exposure to public-charger queues. Long-haul operations need corridor chargers, pull-through space, reliable megawatt-class power and a dispatch plan that works when a vehicle arrives early, late or with an unexpected load.
Deployment status and questions to ask a supplier
Separate four milestones: a product estimate, a public announcement, an order-opening date and actual fleet availability in your market. Tesla’s U.S. page says deliveries start in 2026. Volvo’s FH Aero Electric announcement said orders would begin in Q2 2026, while its later range announcement describes a stepwise rollout from 2026. Neither statement proves that every market has a purchasable truck or a route-ready MCS network.
- Which exact battery, axle and cab configuration produced the quoted range?
- What payload remains after the tractor, trailer, driver allowance and required equipment are weighed?
- What range should be expected at the route’s speed, temperature, grade and trailer type?
- What is the charging curve from the planned arrival state of charge to the target departure state of charge?
- How does power change when another truck uses the same dispenser or cabinet?
- Where can the truck be serviced, and what is the recovery plan for a charger outage?
- When will this configuration be orderable, certified and deliverable in the intended operating region?
When an electric truck is a sensible long-haul choice
A battery-electric tractor is most defensible when the route has predictable mileage, repeatable loads, charging aligned with driver stops, a legal payload that meets the freight requirement and a fallback for charger failure. Depot-based regional work is usually easier because charging can be controlled overnight. Repeated long-haul lanes can also work when corridor charging is dependable and the carrier has validated seasonal energy use.
It is not yet responsible to select a truck solely because its brochure range exceeds the route distance. The correct decision combines a conservative energy model, complete-combination weights, charger availability and real pilot data. On that basis, today’s electric trucks can handle some long-haul routes—but suitability remains route-specific rather than universal.
