In tests Aptera announced on August 27, 2026, TÜV Rheinland reportedly witnessed more than 4 kWh enter a validation vehicle’s battery on each of three sunny July days in Carlsbad, California. The associated 42–47 miles were calculated using Aptera’s target efficiency; the vehicle did not drive those distances on solar power during the tests.
What the solar tests measured
Aptera says TÜV Rheinland solar expert Dr. Giorgio Bardizza attended three test days at the company’s Carlsbad, California, final assembly facility in July 2026. Measurements ran from sunrise to sunset using TÜV’s calibrated instruments. Aptera says the readings captured energy entering the battery after conversion losses, rather than power measured at the solar panels. The company reported these results:

These measurements and estimates were reported by Aptera Motors Corp. The mileage column is arithmetic: the measured battery energy divided by Aptera’s target consumption of 100 watt-hours per mile. It is not a record of miles actually driven. Aptera says the highest-energy test took place on the day with the least available sunlight among the three. Why 40 miles is not a daily guarantee
Solar energy available to a parked vehicle changes with location, season, weather, shading, temperature, panel orientation and parking behavior. A clear summer day in Carlsbad is not a proxy for a cloudy day, a shaded parking spot or winter conditions elsewhere. How efficiently the vehicle uses stored energy also affects the distance that a given solar contribution can support.

Aptera’s live vehicle page describes up to 40 miles of solar-powered driving per day, alongside up to 400 miles of range per full charge. It cautions that the vehicle shown is in testing and validation and that specifications may change. What the vehicle is designed to achieve
In its 2026 Form 10-K, Aptera describes a design with approximately 700 watts of embedded solar cells across more than three square meters of panels. It gives a target consumption rate of approximately 100 Wh/mi and a targeted Launch Edition range of up to 400 miles. Those figures are company targets and disclosures, not proof of final production performance.

The filing also describes Level 1 and Level 2 AC charging and Level 3 DC fast charging through a North American Charging Standard (NACS) connector. Solar is therefore a supplemental charging route in the design, not the only one. Someone who wants grid charging could consider a compatible Level 2 charger, but the cited materials do not establish compatibility for any particular charger model.
What TÜV’s involvement does—and does not—establish
The reported witnessing provides evidence that more than 4 kWh entered the test vehicle’s battery on each of those three test days. It does not establish that every Aptera will collect that amount daily, that the calculated range will be achieved in ordinary driving, or that the test vehicle’s results represent production vehicles. Aptera says the single-vehicle, single-location results may not represent other vehicles, locations, seasons or weather.

Aptera also states that its 100 Wh/mi efficiency figure is a target, so range calculations based on it remain estimates. The company’s announcement says the on-site witnessing service did not certify the vehicle or any component, and did not assess regulatory compliance. TÜV Rheinland North America vice president Jonathan Kotrba’s quoted remark in the release is promotional commentary, not a technical certification finding. Test details and qualifications

Aptera’s 2026 Form 10-K says the company had not commenced production and was continuing validation, testing and certification work. It states a goal of first customer deliveries in 2026, conditional on obtaining additional financing and completing production readiness. A stated goal is not confirmation that production or deliveries have begun; current availability should be checked against Aptera’s latest filing or announcement.
