Oakland officers have asked Tesla owners for footage and, in at least three instances reported in July and August 2024, sought warrants to tow nearby Teslas and search stored video. That does not mean every Tesla records a nearby crime—or that police have a nationwide routine of seizing cars. Sentry Mode recording depends on the vehicle’s settings, event detection and storage, and access may require the owner’s consent or legal process.
What happened in Oakland
A San Francisco Chronicle report published August 31, 2024 describes Oakland officers seeking recordings from Teslas parked near crime scenes. Officers asked some owners for footage; in at least three reported instances during July and August, they sought warrants to tow vehicles and later search their stored video.
These are reported cases, not a count of all such requests or proof that police routinely search for Teslas nationwide. The available reporting does not establish how often departments make these requests or how often warrants are granted.
Could your Tesla have recorded a nearby crime?
Possibly, but a nearby Tesla is not a guaranteed camera witness. Tesla describes Sentry Mode as using the vehicle’s sensors and exterior cameras to detect suspicious activity or a significant threat while parked. Whether a particular event produced usable footage depends on the vehicle’s configuration and whether the system detected and saved it.

- Sentry Mode and settings: The feature must be available and configured for the vehicle and circumstances.
- Event detection: The system must detect an event that triggers recording; proximity alone does not establish that it did.
- Storage: Tesla says saved Sentry Mode footage uses an installed USB drive. If no drive is installed, the vehicle may send an alert without making footage available.
Tesla’s UK privacy notice says, “Sentry Mode footage is not transmitted to Tesla.” That statement concerns Sentry Mode recordings, not every type of vehicle or account data.
Storage requirements can differ by vehicle and model year. Check the manual for your specific Tesla before choosing or configuring a drive; the Model 3 owner’s manual covers that model’s requirements. A compatible drive makes saved footage possible, but cannot ensure the vehicle detected an event or captured a useful clip.

Can police get the footage without towing your Tesla?
In the Chronicle’s Oakland examples, officers sometimes sought owners’ consent for footage, while other reported cases involved warrant applications to tow vehicles and search stored video. The exact route depends on the circumstances and applicable law; the available reporting does not establish a rule for every jurisdiction or request.
A local policy illustrates why it is important not to generalize. The San Francisco Police Department’s Non-City Entity Surveillance Cameras policy says that, absent a warrant, access to a non-city surveillance system is obtained through express consent from the individual or entity managing it. It also says officers may seek a warrant when legally justified if a provider refuses historical footage. This is SFPD policy, not a nationwide standard, and it does not by itself determine what Oakland officers must do.

If police contact you about a request or warrant, distinguish a voluntary request from compulsory legal process, and read any document carefully. For advice about your specific situation, consult a lawyer in your jurisdiction.

What the reporting does—and does not—establish
- It documents Oakland officers seeking nearby Tesla recordings, including warrant efforts in at least three reported instances in July and August 2024.
- It does not show that every Tesla records everything around it, that the cars involved necessarily captured useful footage, or that police routinely seize Teslas across the country.
- It does not provide a national dataset on requests, warrants or outcomes. A San Francisco department policy is a local example, not a universal rule.
