Tesla was reported to offer some early Cybertruck owners a free drive-unit replacement during service visits in 2024, describing the work as part of a study to improve efficiency and reliability. The report did not establish that Tesla was broadly contacting early buyers; it said the offer apparently came up during appointments made for other reasons. The reported study was separate from two later Tesla service actions, including a safety recall involving drive inverters.
What Tesla reportedly offered early Cybertruck owners
On July 5, 2024, Drive Tesla reported that some early Cybertruck owners were offered a drive-unit replacement at no charge. The report cited a Tesla Service message shared by Out of Spec’s Kyle Conner, which described replacement units as “the latest production pedigree which is intended to improve efficiency and reliability.” Drive Tesla’s July 5 report

According to that report, the offer apparently arose during service appointments owners had made for other reasons. The report said Tesla’s message characterized the replacement as not prompted by an identified vehicle concern and said the truck remained safe to drive before replacement. Those are statements attributed to the service message, not an independently established safety finding.
That evidence supports a limited claim: Tesla offered some early owners a free drive-unit swap as part of an efficiency-and-reliability study. It does not show a broad campaign to contact all early Cybertruck buyers.

How the 2024 study differed from later Tesla actions
The reported study, a later rear-drive-unit campaign and a separate inverter safety recall involved different timing, conditions and remedies. Tesla’s official documents make the distinction important: a drive unit and a drive inverter are separate components, and the repair can depend on the vehicle’s VIN.

Drive unit versus drive inverter: why the wording matters
“Motor” is an accessible shorthand, but Tesla’s documents describe the early offer and October action as drive-unit work. The November recall concerns drive inverters, which are distinct components. Tesla says the inverter condition could cause loss of propulsion; that risk should not be retroactively assigned to the separate July study offer.

Nor does the later recall mean every truck receives the same part. Tesla’s bulletin directs owners to its VIN tool to identify whether an inverter, a drive unit or both need replacement. The applicability of the October rear-drive-unit campaign is also vehicle-specific.
How Cybertruck owners can check whether action is needed
- Check the VIN. Enter the Cybertruck’s vehicle identification number in Tesla’s Cybertruck recall lookup to see whether the inverter recall applies and what remedy is listed.
- Ask Tesla Service about campaigns. If you are checking for the October rear-drive-unit campaign or have questions about a service message, contact Tesla Service with the VIN. The campaign bulletin makes applicability vehicle-specific: SB-24-40-006.
- Follow the VIN-directed repair. Do not assume that another owner’s work order applies to your truck. The recall bulletin identifies the repair by vehicle, and the required work may differ between vehicles.
Drive-unit replacement is specialist service work
Tesla’s service manual describes a repair requiring service-mode and Toolbox procedures, software reinstallation and other vehicle-specific steps. It is not a consumer DIY procedure. Tesla Cybertruck service manual
