Short answer: no credible nine-car list can be supported by the available test data. The evidence directly compares a 2026 Ford Mustang GT with a 2026 Dodge Charger Scat Pack, while the Subaru figures come from 2024 and 2025 WRX tests—not a verified WRX STI of a specified year. The Mustang and Charger are both dramatically quicker than those WRX results in a straight-line launch, but that does not prove either one beats every WRX STI in every situation.
Why the “nine cars” claim needs a qualification
A headline saying that nine ordinary American cars “smoke” a Subaru WRX STI makes three promises: that there are nine qualifying cars, that they are ordinary rather than specialized performance trims, and that each one has been measured against a defined STI model. The available evidence does not establish any of those promises in full.

Only two American cars have a controlled, instrumented comparison in the supplied material: the 2026 Ford Mustang GT and the 2026 Dodge Charger Scat Pack. The Subaru references are for the regular WRX. Car and Driver tested a 2024 WRX with a manual transmission at 5.5 seconds from 0 to 60 mph and a WRX GT with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) at 5.4 seconds. Consumer Reports recorded 5.8 seconds for its 2025 manual WRX test car. None of those reports identifies a WRX STI model year.

That distinction matters because an STI is a different specification from a standard WRX, and acceleration varies with model year, transmission, tires, launch technique, surface and test equipment. Treating a WRX result as an STI baseline would make the comparison look more certain than the measurements allow.

What “smoke” should mean in a car comparison
There is no single objective “faster” score. A car can win a drag race and lose a rolling acceleration test, braking contest or corner. For a useful answer, separate the questions:
- 0–60 mph: a standing-start launch that rewards traction, gearing and launch control.
- Quarter-mile: elapsed time shows who reaches the finish first; trap speed indicates how much speed the car is carrying.
- Rolling acceleration: 5–60, 30–50 and 50–70 mph tests show how quickly a car accelerates after the launch advantage disappears.
- Cornering: skidpad grip measures steady-state lateral acceleration, not a complete road course.
- Braking: stopping distance from 70 mph is a separate safety and performance measure.
In this article, “smoke” is therefore treated as a metric-specific result, not a universal declaration that one car dominates everywhere.
The Subaru numbers that are actually documented
The sourced WRX figures provide context, not a verified STI benchmark. Car and Driver lists 271 horsepower for the 2024 WRX and measured its manual version at 5.5 seconds to 60 mph. Its WRX GT/CVT test reached 60 mph in 5.4 seconds. Consumer Reports also lists 271 horsepower for the 2025 WRX and measured 5.8 seconds with a manual transmission.
| Subaru test car | Horsepower | Transmission | 0–60 mph | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 WRX | 271 hp | Manual | 5.5 seconds | Car and Driver instrumented test |
| 2024 WRX GT | 271 hp | CVT | 5.4 seconds | Car and Driver instrumented test |
| 2025 WRX | 271 hp | Manual | 5.8 seconds | Consumer Reports test |
These are separate tests under different conditions, so the table should not be read as a laboratory ranking. More importantly, it does not establish what a particular WRX STI would do. A defensible STI comparison must name the STI year, transmission and test source before declaring a winner.
2026 Mustang GT versus 2026 Charger Scat Pack: the direct evidence
Car and Driver’s 2026 comparison tested a 480-horsepower Mustang GT against a 550-horsepower Charger Scat Pack. Both reached 60 mph in 3.7 seconds, showing that a higher advertised horsepower number did not produce a quicker measured launch in that test.

| Metric | 2026 Ford Mustang GT | 2026 Dodge Charger Scat Pack | What the test establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engine output listed in comparison | 480 hp | 550 hp | Both are performance trims, not base cars |
| 0–60 mph | 3.7 seconds | 3.7 seconds | Dead heat in the instrumented launch |
| Quarter-mile | 12.2 seconds at 118 mph | 12.1 seconds at 116 mph | Charger was 0.1 second quicker by elapsed time; Mustang had higher trap speed |
| 5–60 mph | 4.0 seconds | 4.8 seconds | Mustang ahead by 0.8 second in the rolling-start measure |
| Skidpad | 0.97 g | 0.90 g | Mustang generated more lateral grip |
| 70–0 mph braking | 149 feet | 177 feet | Mustang stopped in a shorter distance |
The quarter-mile result illustrates why “smoke” needs a definition. The Charger finished first on elapsed time, but the Mustang crossed the traps at a higher speed. On the rolling tests cited by Car and Driver, the Mustang won the 5–60 sprint by eight-tenths of a second and also led the 30–50 and 50–70 mph sprints by half a second. It produced the stronger skidpad number and required less road to stop from 70 mph.
Those results point to different strengths rather than one all-purpose winner. If your only question is which car records the lower quarter-mile elapsed time in that test, the Charger has the answer. If you care about passing acceleration, cornering grip or braking, the Mustang has the measured advantage.
Why the two cars are not “ordinary” in the usual sense
“Ordinary” is not a technical vehicle category. If it means familiar American nameplates that a buyer can recognize, the Mustang and Charger fit that broad description. If it means regular trims with modest engines and everyday equipment, they do not: both cars in the comparison are high-performance versions, and the Charger carries substantial size and weight.
That wording also affects how a reader interprets a race against an STI. A performance-trim Mustang or Charger is not an apples-to-apples representative of an average family sedan. The fairer description is “mainstream American performance cars,” unless a source defines a narrower class.
Do not mix gasoline and electric Charger specifications
Dodge has published figures for more than one Scat Pack configuration. Its 2026 announcement for the gasoline Charger Scat Pack lists 550 horsepower, a target 0–60-mph time of 3.9 seconds and a 12.2-second quarter-mile target. Those are manufacturer targets, not the independent test results in the comparison table.

A separate 2024 Stellantis announcement described an electric Daytona Scat Pack with 670 horsepower, an expected 3.3-second 0–60 time and an estimated 11.5-second quarter-mile. The acceleration numbers were presented as expectations or estimates. The electric Daytona and gasoline SIXPACK Charger are different powertrains and should never be combined into one ranking.
For a shopping decision, label every figure as one of the following:
- Independent measurement: a magazine or testing organization recorded the run with its own equipment.
- Manufacturer target: a company’s projected result for a production specification.
- Manufacturer estimate: an expected figure that may change with final testing and conditions.
What these results can—and cannot—say about a WRX STI
Relative to the documented 2024 and 2025 WRX launches, the Mustang and Charger times are substantially quicker from a standing start. That is a comparison to those WRX test cars, not proof that either car will beat every STI model.
A proper STI claim requires all of the following:
- Identify the exact STI model year and market. Model names and equipment can change by region and year.
- Use a measured STI result from a named source, rather than substituting a regular WRX number.
- Match the test metric. Compare 0–60 with 0–60, quarter-mile elapsed time with quarter-mile elapsed time, and so on.
- Record transmission, drivetrain, tire specification, launch procedure, weather and surface when available.
- Separate independent tests from manufacturer claims.
- State whether the conclusion applies to a drag launch, a rolling pass, a road course or braking.
Without those controls, a list of nine cars can create false precision. A small difference in launch technique or test surface can change a 0–60 result, while a car that loses a drag race may still be faster in a corner or safer under braking.

If straight-line launches are your priority
Use independently measured 0–60 and quarter-mile figures from the same publication whenever possible. The direct 2026 comparison shows the Mustang and Charger tied to 60 mph, with the Charger holding the tiny quarter-mile elapsed-time edge. That is enough to call them closely matched in a drag-style launch, not enough to rank every American car against an STI.

If passing power matters more than launch traction
Look for rolling-start tests. The Mustang’s lead in the cited 5–60, 30–50 and 50–70 measurements shows why a car’s behavior after the launch can reverse the order seen at the strip.
If roads and braking matter
Give skidpad and stopping-distance data their own weight. The Mustang’s stronger grip and shorter 70-mph stop in the comparison indicate a more favorable result for handling and braking, even though the Charger posted the quicker quarter-mile elapsed time.
If the listing says “ordinary”
Ask whether the writer means a base trim, a widely sold model, or simply a recognizable brand. Performance trims should be labeled as such, because their engines, tires, brakes and prices can differ substantially from the ordinary versions of the same nameplate.
Verdict: a two-car comparison, not a verified nine-car list
The available measurements support a precise conclusion: the 2026 Mustang GT and 2026 Charger Scat Pack are closely matched at a standing launch; the Charger is marginally quicker over the tested quarter-mile by elapsed time, while the Mustang is stronger in rolling acceleration, skidpad grip and braking. The Subaru data establish benchmarks for 2024 and 2025 WRX cars, not for a specified WRX STI.

Consequently, an article claiming that nine ordinary American cars definitively smoke the WRX STI would overstate the evidence. To publish that ranking responsibly, each candidate needs a same-method comparison against a named STI model. Until then, treat the Mustang and Charger results as useful, metric-by-metric context—not as proof of a universal nine-car STI defeat.
