New cars have become a stretch for many households, but the available data do not prove that most Americans cannot afford any new car. The clearest recent benchmark is a December 2025 average transaction price of $50,326 and a typical monthly payment of $767. Those are market averages—not a price quote or affordability verdict for a particular buyer.
What “affordable” means—and what the headline numbers show
A car’s sticker price is only one part of what it costs a household. The down payment, interest rate, loan length, taxes and fees, insurance, fuel or charging, and maintenance all affect whether a vehicle fits a budget. A buyer’s income, existing debts, credit profile, and planned ownership period matter too.
Cox Automotive’s Vehicle Affordability Index combines government and industry data, including Kelley Blue Book pricing. For December 2025, it measured the average new vehicle at $50,326, a typical monthly payment at $767, and the average vehicle’s price at 36.22 weeks of median income. The weeks figure is an index comparison between the average vehicle and median income; it is not the number of weeks a particular person must work or save to buy a car. The index uses a standardized 72-month fixed-rate loan as its average-interest-rate input, so it is not a full household budget. Cox Automotive’s December 2025 affordability report
The same report shows why high prices do not automatically mean affordability is worsening every month: wages rose 3.5% year over year, the average new-vehicle price rose 0.7%, and the index’s affordability measure improved 3.2% from a year earlier, despite being essentially unchanged month to month. Affordability can improve relative to income even while cars remain expensive.

Kelley Blue Book’s September 17, 2026 search-result excerpt put the typical monthly payment at $770 in August 2026, up 2.6% year over year. The page was not directly accessible, so this is a lower-confidence corroborating figure rather than the main benchmark. Kelley Blue Book’s August 2026 report
Why inexpensive new cars are harder to find
The average transaction price can obscure a more immediate problem for budget-conscious shoppers: fewer listings are at the low end of the market. The Associated Press reported in April 2026 that CarGurus estimated about 13% of new-vehicle listings were priced below $30,000, compared with 40% five years earlier. That is a share of listings, not a count of vehicles sold or a measure of how many households can afford one.

AP attributed the squeeze to several factors, including consumer demand for larger, more expensive vehicles, fewer inexpensive models, desired features and trim packages, pandemic-era supply disruption, and tariffs. The report also noted rising insurance and repair costs, which can make ownership expensive beyond the purchase itself. When a long loan makes the payment look affordable
Stretching a loan over more months can lower the required monthly payment, but it can raise total interest paid and leave a borrower owing more than the car is worth for longer. The Federal Reserve Board’s November 2023 analysis cited Experian Velocity data showing that, in 2023 Q3, 13.6% of new auto loans and 10.5% of used auto loans had terms of 84 months or longer. Compare the total amount paid over the loan, not just the monthly bill. Also review the itemized contract: the Federal Reserve notes that dealer add-ons may be financed into a loan and can be costly or poorly understood. That is a reason to ask what each item is, whether it is optional, and what it adds to the total—not a reason to assume every add-on is bad.
How to compare a new car, a cheaper model, and a used car
Compare candidates using the same ownership assumptions. A lower payment alone does not show which vehicle costs less overall, particularly when loan terms differ.

A lower-priced new model may reduce the purchase price while preserving new-car warranty coverage; a used vehicle may cost less upfront but needs its own assessment of condition, maintenance, and repair risk. Neither option is automatically affordable. AP reported that the share of used-vehicle listings priced below $30,000 had also declined, so switching to used does not guarantee access to a low-priced car.

- Set a total-cost limit. Decide what the household can spend on transportation each month after accounting for insurance, fuel or charging, maintenance, and other fixed expenses. Do not define the limit by the lender’s maximum approval.
- Get complete written quotes. For each vehicle, request the out-the-door price and financing terms, then obtain an insurance quote. Compare the same down payment and ownership period where possible.
- Test the loan’s full cost. Calculate total paid over the term and ask how long the loan could leave you owing more than the vehicle’s value. Treat a very long term as a trade-off, not a discount.
- Widen the vehicle search carefully. Compare lower-priced new models and used cars, but assess condition, warranty, likely repairs, and total ownership cost rather than relying on asking price alone.
- Review every contract line. Ask the dealer to identify optional products and explain their price and effect on the financed amount before signing.
As Cox Automotive senior economist Charlie Chesbrough put it to AP, “The ability to buy transportation is still out there. The question is just, what do you get for your money?” The practical answer depends on a buyer’s budget and the specific vehicle and financing offer—not on the average transaction price by itself.
