But Bluetooth pairing does not guarantee that the stereo can stream music, handle calls, or display apps. If it cannot, an AUX receiver, FM transmitter, or stereo upgrade may help.
First identify whether you want music, calls, or an on-dash app interface: Bluetooth audio, hands-free calling, and Apple CarPlay or Android Auto are related but different features.

Check what your car supports
Look in the radio’s menus for Bluetooth, Phone, Pair Device, or BT Audio. A Bluetooth symbol or steering-wheel phone button is a clue, but check the owner’s manual or stereo specifications to confirm which features are supported. Manuals may describe music streaming as A2DP, hands-free calling as HFP, or track controls as AVRCP.

- Bluetooth audio: Streams music, podcasts, or other audio to the speakers.
- Bluetooth calling: Routes calls through the stereo; call support generally requires a compatible hands-free system and microphone.
- CarPlay or Android Auto: Shows a supported phone interface on the car’s display for features such as navigation, calls, messages, and selected apps.
- AUX: A 3.5-mm input can carry audio, but does not itself provide Bluetooth.
- USB: May charge a phone, play media, or support wired phone projection. A USB port alone does not prove that it supports CarPlay or Android Auto; Google notes that Android Auto is not available in every car with USB (Google’s compatibility guidance).
Some radios support calls but not music, some stream music but lack hands-free calling, and others support both. Google cautions that not all cars can play music or handle calls over Bluetooth (Android Bluetooth troubleshooting).

Pair an iPhone with the car
- Park the vehicle, turn on the stereo, and open its Phone, Bluetooth, or Add Device menu.
- Choose Pair New Device or the closest equivalent. Many cars require you to start or complete pairing from the car’s screen.
- On the iPhone, go to Settings > Bluetooth and select the car when it appears.
- Check that any PIN or passcode shown on the phone matches the car, then confirm on both. Accept contact or call-history access only if you want those features.
- On the stereo, select Bluetooth Audio, BT Audio, or a similar media source. Start playback on the iPhone.
Exact car-side menus vary; use the vehicle manual if the radio does not enter pairing mode. Apple’s iPhone-to-car instructions cover Bluetooth as well as CarPlay and USB connections.
Pair an Android phone with the car
- Park, switch on the stereo, and put it into Bluetooth pairing mode using its Phone, Bluetooth, or Add Device menu.
- On the phone, open Settings > Connected devices > Pair new device. The wording may differ by phone maker and Android version.
- Select the car, compare the PINs, and confirm the pairing. Grant contact access if you want the car to show contacts.
- Open the car’s entry in the phone’s Bluetooth settings and check that Media audio is on. Check Phone audio as well if calls are not routing through the stereo.
- Select the stereo’s Bluetooth audio source and play something on the phone.
Android treats media and phone audio as separate options, so a device can be paired while one is disabled. See Google’s Bluetooth troubleshooting steps.

Connected but silent? Select the right source
Pairing establishes a connection; it does not necessarily switch the radio to that connection. Press Source, Media, or Mode on the stereo and choose Bluetooth audio. Then start playback and check that both phone and stereo volumes are up. If sound still comes from the phone, use its audio-output selector to choose the car. On iPhone, choose the destination from playback controls or Control Center; Apple explains this in its Bluetooth audio playback guide.

Bluetooth, CarPlay, and Android Auto are not the same
| Feature | What it does | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| Bluetooth audio | Plays phone audio through the car; may include basic track controls. | A stereo with Bluetooth audio support. |
| Hands-free Bluetooth calls | Routes calls through the car’s audio system, often using a car microphone. | A stereo that supports hands-free calling and a working microphone. |
| CarPlay or Android Auto | Projects a driving-oriented interface and supported apps onto a compatible display. | A compatible car or receiver and phone. Connection may be wired or wireless. |
Bluetooth is often enough for music and calls, but it does not by itself add navigation or a phone interface to the dashboard. Wireless CarPlay and Android Auto use Bluetooth during setup but also rely on Wi-Fi; the car or receiver must support the relevant system. See Apple’s car connection guidance and Google’s Android Auto instructions. Google’s current guidance lists Android 9 or later for wired Android Auto and Android 11 or later for wireless projection, subject to other phone, vehicle, and regional requirements (compatibility details). Compatibility depends on the exact car or receiver—not just its model year.
If your radio has no Bluetooth
| Your situation | Possible solution | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Radio has Bluetooth audio | Pair the phone directly. | Simple and usually free, but does not add CarPlay or Android Auto. |
| Radio has AUX but no Bluetooth | Use a Bluetooth AUX receiver connected to the 3.5-mm input. | Usually avoids FM interference; requires AUX and often a power source. |
| Radio has FM but no AUX or Bluetooth | Use a Bluetooth-to-FM transmitter. Pair the phone to it, then tune the radio to the same unused FM frequency. | Broad compatibility, but sound can suffer from interference or competing stations. |
| Car already has wired CarPlay or Android Auto | Consider a compatible wireless adapter. | Removes the cable; does not add phone projection to a Bluetooth-only stereo or a USB charging port. |
| You want a permanent integrated upgrade | Replace the head unit with a compatible receiver. | May add Bluetooth and phone projection, but fitment, installation, wiring, and factory-feature integration need checking. |
| You want a screen without replacing the radio | Consider a portable CarPlay/Android Auto display. | Avoids head-unit replacement, but adds a screen, power wiring, and an audio-routing step. |
An AUX receiver is often the better choice when AUX is available and you want to avoid FM interference. An FM transmitter is useful when the radio has neither AUX nor Bluetooth. Before buying, verify that an adapter matches your exact setup: wireless CarPlay/Android Auto adapters generally require that the car already supports the corresponding wired system and has a data-capable USB port. A charging-only USB port is not sufficient. For example, Motorola’s MA1 is intended for vehicles with factory-fitted wired Android Auto; it is not a general Bluetooth upgrade.

Troubleshooting by symptom
The car cannot find the phone
- Put the car explicitly into Add Phone or pairing mode; simply switching on Bluetooth may not be enough.
- Remove unused phones from the car’s Bluetooth list if its memory is full.
- On the phone, forget the car. Restart the phone and infotainment system, then pair again while parked.
- If the car has several saved devices, select the intended phone manually. In a shared car, temporarily turn off Bluetooth on the other phone to prevent it from reconnecting first.
Apple and Google both recommend restarting and clearing old pairings when connection problems persist (Apple; Google).

Calls work, but music does not
Check whether the stereo supports Bluetooth music streaming, not just calls. On Android, confirm Media audio is enabled; then set the radio source to Bluetooth audio. If the manual confirms streaming support and the settings are correct, check for a stereo firmware update.
Music works, but calls do not
Check whether Phone audio is enabled in the phone’s paired-device settings, whether the car has a microphone, and whether another phone is connected for calls. The stereo may support music streaming without hands-free calling.
The FM transmitter has static or cuts out
- Find a frequency with no active station and set both the transmitter and radio to exactly that frequency.
- Try another unused frequency if interference persists, and test again in a different location.
- If the car has AUX, switch to an AUX receiver to avoid competing FM signals.
FM performance varies with location and local stations; do not expect FM transmission to be interference-free.
A wireless projection adapter is not recognized
First confirm that wired CarPlay or Android Auto already works through that car’s data-capable USB port. Then check that Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are enabled, remove stale saved connections, and follow the adapter maker’s reset and update steps. Try the supplied or a known-good data cable if the setup uses one. An adapter cannot create CarPlay or Android Auto support in a stereo that lacks it.
Choose the connection that fits
- Just want music or podcasts? Use built-in Bluetooth audio if available; otherwise use AUX if the car has it, or FM if it does not.
- Need hands-free calls? Confirm that the stereo supports calls and has a working microphone. Pairing alone is not proof.
- Want maps and supported apps on the dashboard? Check whether the car supports wired or wireless CarPlay or Android Auto. If wired projection already works, a compatible wireless adapter may remove the cable.
- Want a lasting upgrade? Compare a replacement receiver with a portable display, taking installation and factory-feature compatibility into account.
Set up and troubleshoot while parked, use voice or steering-wheel controls where available, and follow local distracted-driving laws. Google likewise advises setting up Android Auto while the vehicle is in park (Android Auto setup and safety guidance).
