GM EV drivers can use compatible Tesla Superchargers, but whether an adapter is needed depends on the vehicle’s charge port. GM access began on September 18, 2024—not in 2026—and stations and vehicles must be eligible for one another. Most 2026 GM EVs still had CCS ports and needed a GM-approved NACS DC adapter; GM said it expected 2027 model-year EVs to launch with native NACS ports.
When GM EVs gained access to Tesla Superchargers
GM announced access to more than 17,800 Tesla Superchargers on September 18, 2024, using a GM-approved NACS DC adapter for vehicles with CCS ports. That was the figure in GM’s announcement at the time, not a current network count. GM’s September 18, 2024 announcement said drivers could use their GM brand app to find stations, check availability, start charging and pay.
The change gives eligible GM drivers another fast-charging option; it does not mean every Tesla Supercharger works with every GM EV. Tesla describes access for other automakers as dependent on both the vehicle and the site. Check a specific station in the relevant app before planning a stop.
Does your GM EV need an adapter?
| Vehicle charge port | What you need for a compatible Tesla Supercharger |
|---|---|
| CCS1 | A NACS DC adapter supplied by GM or Tesla, plus confirmation in the app that the vehicle and site are eligible. |
| Native NACS | No adapter for the plug connection, but the vehicle and station still need to be compatible. |
Model year alone is not a reliable substitute for checking the actual vehicle. In an August 2026 overview, GM said most 2026 EVs across Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC still had CCS ports and required an adapter. GM said it expected all 2027 model-year EVs across those brands to have native NACS ports; that was an expectation, not confirmation that every such vehicle had launched. See GM’s charging overview for its stated transition information.

How to start a Tesla Supercharger session with the GM app
Chevrolet’s support instructions describe this path for setting up public charging in its app. The exact brand-app labels may vary, so follow the instructions for your Chevrolet, Cadillac or GMC account.
- Open the GM brand app and go to Settings, then Public Charging.
- Activate Tesla Supercharger access and add a payment method when prompted.
- Use the app to locate a compatible Supercharger and check its availability before driving there.
- At the charger, connect the Tesla cable to the NACS DC adapter, then connect the adapter to the vehicle’s CCS port.
- Start the session in the app and confirm that charging has begun.
Chevrolet says this app-based Tesla access has no monthly fee; drivers pay for the energy used. Its setup and session guidance is on the Chevrolet public-charging support page.

Can you use Tesla’s app instead?
Yes. Tesla’s app offers a separate route for drivers of other automakers’ EVs: add vehicle details, find a compatible location, add payment and start the session. Tesla identifies GM as an automaker with Supercharger access, but says availability depends on the site and vehicle. Its Supercharging support page for other EVs says a membership is not required at sites open to other vehicles; Tesla offers a paid membership for lower prices at select sites. That is separate from Chevrolet’s statement that its GM-app route has no monthly fee.
Which Tesla chargers work, and what about Destination chargers?
GM’s NACS DC adapter is intended for compatible Tesla Superchargers and other DC fast chargers equipped with NACS. GM says it can provide access to V3 and later Superchargers; drivers should check the brand app for compatible sites. The adapter does not work with Tesla Level 2 Destination chargers, which are AC chargers. A connector that fits is not proof that a vehicle, charger or charging session is supported.

GM lists its NACS DC adapter as accessory part 85836744. The adapter is rated up to 500 amps and 1,000 volts, but those figures describe the adapter’s rating, not the charging speed a GM vehicle will achieve. Actual charging rates depend on the charger’s generation and output, the vehicle’s charging capability and other factors. See GM’s adapter product listing.
Use an approved adapter
Tesla says CCS1 vehicles must use an NACS DC adapter supplied by Tesla or the vehicle manufacturer and prohibits third-party adapters. GM strongly recommends a GM-approved adapter. GM also says damage caused by installing or using non-GM-approved parts is not covered under the vehicle limited warranty and may affect remaining coverage for affected components. These are the manufacturers’ stated policies; a particular warranty claim depends on its circumstances. Consult the vehicle’s documentation and the relevant manufacturer guidance before using an adapter.

What GM’s newer charging announcements change
GM’s June 2026 Energy Pass announcement said its vehicle apps would combine network registration and payment. At launch, GM named Tesla Supercharger, IONNA and Electrify America; it described ChargePoint and EVgo as coming soon. GM also announced a later-2026 over-the-air update intended to enable Plug & Charge on its NACS-native EVs then on the road. Those were rollout plans in the announcement, not confirmation that every named network or the update is live for every driver. Check the current brand app and vehicle software information. Details are in GM’s June 2026 Energy Pass announcement.
