Electronic Design contributing editor Lee Goldberg plans to report from both events, following the batteries, motors, power-management systems, and people behind the technology.
What electric aviation will be at Sun ’n Fun 2026
Sun ’n Fun Aviation Expo runs April 14–19 in Lakeland, Florida. The expo preview describes an event expecting more than 4,000 aircraft and more than 200,000 aviation enthusiasts, with aviation history alongside new developments. Those are figures given in the 2026 preview, not independently verified attendance results. Sun ’n Fun 2026 preview
The Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) community includes people who design, build, fly, and restore aircraft. The preview expected electric powerplants, battery systems, and complete aircraft from companies including Aura, Bristell, Pipistrel, and Pivotal. An expected exhibitor or product presence is not a guarantee that a particular aircraft will be on display or available to buy. Sun ’n Fun electric aviation preview
Lee Goldberg, an Electronic Design contributing editor, described the opportunity this way: “Although the e-aviation revolution is in its early days, several manufacturers will be exhibiting power plants, battery systems, and entire aircraft at the show.”

What Flite Fest 2026 is
Flite Fest is a community event centered on building and flying radio-controlled aircraft. The 2026 event is scheduled for August 6–9 in Dayton, Ohio, at the National Museum of the United States Air Force, in collaboration with the DARPA Lift Challenge. Its announced program retains 24-hour build tents, open flying, unusual builds, RC air combat, and STEM education. Flite Fest 2026 preview
The previous Flite Fest in Marion, Ohio, reportedly drew more than 6,000 hobbyists, according to Electronic Design’s 2026 preview. The gathering’s appeal is practical as well as social: participants build, fly, crash, repair, and relaunch electrically powered model aircraft. Flite Fest background

How the two events fit into electric aviation
| Event | What it foregrounds | What visitors can learn about |
|---|---|---|
| Sun ’n Fun, Lakeland, Florida | Full-scale aircraft, propulsion systems, battery systems, and emerging eVTOL concepts | Aircraft development, system integration, and the practical limits of carrying people or useful payload on stored electrical energy |
| Flite Fest, Dayton, Ohio | Hands-on RC construction and flight | How electric model aircraft are assembled, flown, repaired, and adapted by builders |
The scale differs, but the engineering questions connect them: how much energy a battery can store, how quickly it can deliver power, how much the propulsion system weighs, and what the aircraft is expected to do. The events are not interchangeable demonstrations: a model aircraft’s success does not establish the safety, range, or readiness of a full-scale passenger aircraft.

Why batteries, motors, and aircraft layout matter
Electric aviation depends on more than fitting a motor to an airframe. Batteries, motors, and power-management systems are improving, but aircraft designers still have to balance payload, speed, range, weight, cost, and safety margin against available energy and power density. Those constraints shape both an aircraft’s mission and how much reserve it can carry. Electric aviation technology overview
A related Electronic Design field report gives contemporary commercial cells at approximately 250–350 Wh/kg, with prices approaching $100/kWh. These are figures reported in that 2026 field report, not a guarantee for every cell, aircraft battery pack, or purchase. Pack-level performance and cost can differ from cell figures. The report also identifies low battery power density, the complexity of aircraft that operate in multiple flight modes, and high development costs as continuing eVTOL challenges. Electric aircraft can use different propulsion architectures, including multicopters, lift-and-thrust designs that use wings in cruise, and hybrid or angled-propulsor arrangements. Layout affects efficiency, mechanical and control complexity, transition between flight modes, maintenance, and mission suitability; no single architecture is best for every use. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How far can today’s electric aircraft fly?
There is no single useful range figure for “electric aircraft.” Endurance or range depends on aircraft type, battery and propulsion design, payload, operating rules, and the mission. A multicopter, a winged aircraft, and an RC plane are not comparable just because each uses electric propulsion.

The field report describes Jetson One as having approximately 20 minutes of endurance and a 210-pound payload under the limits it discusses. Those numbers illustrate one personal eVTOL’s trade-offs in that context; they are not a general benchmark for eVTOLs or a promise of real-world flight time under all conditions. It also notes that early personal eVTOLs can be constrained by ultralight regulations and battery endurance. Jetson One and personal eVTOL constraints
When comparing aircraft or demonstrations, check the details that define the mission:
- Propulsion layout: multicopter, lift-and-thrust, hybrid, or another arrangement.
- Battery: energy and power density, and whether a quoted figure refers to cells or a complete pack.
- Useful performance: payload, range or endurance, and speed.
- Operations: takeoff and landing requirements, applicable certification or operating rules, and testing maturity.
- Purpose: the intended mission, rather than a headline specification detached from how the aircraft is meant to be used.
What you need to build an electric RC plane
Flite Fest’s build tents and electric model-aircraft activity make it a natural place to explore RC construction. There is no universal parts list: what you need depends on the airframe and whether it is sold ready to fly or as a kit. Before choosing an RC electric airplane kit, verify what is actually included and compatible.
- Airframe and format: check wingspan, kit versus ready-to-fly status, and how easily damaged parts can be repaired or replaced.
- Power system: confirm whether the motor and electronic speed controller (ESC) are included and suit the model.
- Battery and charging: check the specified battery chemistry, capacity, connector, and compatible charger; do not assume a pack will fit because it is LiPo.
- Radio equipment: verify whether a transmitter and receiver are included and whether the receiver works with the radio system you plan to use.
- Ongoing support: check spare-parts availability and the repairability of the airframe before buying.
These checks help prevent a common mismatch: buying a kit or battery that appears suitable but lacks the required motor, ESC, radio components, connector, or compatible charger. Product specifications and availability vary, so confirm them for the specific model rather than relying on a generic RC-plane checklist. RC aircraft comparison factors
