In August 2023, researchers demonstrated that physical access to certain AMD-based Tesla infotainment systems could be used to activate some software-locked features, including rear-seat heating and Acceleration Boost. The work also exposed sensitive data and a vehicle-authentication key. It did not unlock Full Self-Driving (FSD), and it was a hardware security demonstration—not a consumer-ready upgrade.
What the Tesla jailbreak demonstrated
Researchers associated with Technische Universität Berlin and independent researcher Christian Werling reported a voltage-glitching attack on Tesla’s AMD-based infotainment platform. BleepingComputer reported that they obtained root access on recent systems, extracted a hardware-bound RSA key used for Tesla service-network authentication, and activated software-locked rear-seat heating and Acceleration Boost. TechCrunch also reported the rear-seat-heating demonstration.
The findings describe what the researchers achieved on the systems they examined in 2023. They do not establish that every Tesla, model year, or software version is vulnerable, or that the same results remain possible on vehicles running current software.

Did researchers unlock FSD?
No. The reporting on the demonstration specifically says the claim that it could unlock FSD was false. The researchers showed certain feature activations, but that does not mean every paid or region-restricted function can be enabled the same way. Regional self-driving and navigation capabilities were described as untested, not as successful unlocks.

How the attack worked, at a high level
The researchers used voltage glitching, a form of hardware fault injection, against the AMD processor and its secure-boot trust chain. By disrupting the processor at a carefully chosen moment, they could interfere with the expected boot process. They then reverse-engineered that process to obtain a root shell, according to BleepingComputer. This is a hardware attack requiring access to the vehicle’s electronics, not a remote exploit or an in-car menu setting.
BleepingComputer reported that the proof of concept involved soldering and roughly $100 of off-the-shelf electronics, including a Teensy 4.0 development board. That figure describes the reported components for the research demonstration; it is not the cost of a reliable upgrade kit, and the board is a general-purpose lab tool rather than a guaranteed Tesla unlock device.

What personal information could be exposed?
TechCrunch and BleepingComputer reported access to information stored on the vehicle, including contacts, calendar entries, call logs, visited locations, Wi-Fi passwords, and email-session cookies or tokens. The precise data available can depend on what was stored or used in the vehicle; the reports do not establish that every affected car contained every listed item.
The researchers also extracted a hardware-bound attestation or authentication key used for Tesla service-network authentication. BleepingComputer said that key could enable impersonation of a vehicle identity on Tesla’s network and support further work on unsupported-region operation or independent repair and modification. That is a potential consequence of key exposure, not evidence that the research team used it to carry out those activities.

Did Tesla fix the vulnerability?
The 2023 reporting supports a partial mitigation, not a claim that the entire issue was fixed. Tesla told the researchers the rear-seat-heater proof of concept depended on old firmware, while newer versions required a valid Tesla signature checked by the Gateway. But BleepingComputer reported that key extraction still worked on the latest software update available to the researchers at the time of publication.
That is a time-bounded finding from 2023. It does not establish the status of Tesla software today, and it should not be read as evidence that the key can still be extracted from a currently updated vehicle. The reported mitigation also concerned the heater proof of concept; it did not, by itself, establish that all attack paths or exposed data were addressed.

Why this is not a practical owner upgrade
The demonstration required physical access, soldering, electronics work, and reverse engineering. Attempting hardware modifications can damage the vehicle, affect warranty coverage, expose personal information, or create legal and safety risks. Tesla’s security policy asks researchers to use vehicles they own or are authorized to test, avoid privacy violations and unsafe conditions, and report vehicle issues through its vulnerability-reporting process. Tesla says it uses Bugcrowd as a platform for rewarding issues; any program terms should be checked directly with Tesla before participating.
The responsible takeaway is to treat this as a security finding, not a set of instructions for bypassing paid features. Owners concerned about vehicle security should keep vehicle software current, avoid sharing vehicle access with untrusted people, and use Tesla’s official reporting channel if they identify a security issue.
