Choose around snow depth and surface, route width, passenger and cargo needs, and whether you want an enclosed cabin. For deeper snow, a track system is the most directly supported snow-access upgrade; for a Defender side-by-side, cab, heat, and defrost options can improve comfort. Neither tracks nor any other accessory make unsafe lake ice safe.
How to choose a Can-Am for winter access
Start with the route and the load, not the accessory catalog. An ATV offers a more open ride; a side-by-side such as the Defender can be equipped with a cab and cold-weather comfort options. The reviewed Can-Am guidance does not name a best vehicle for ice fishing, so compare the exact machine against your conditions.
- Snow and terrain: Consider snow depth, traction, and whether the route is a packed trail, deep snow, or a slippery hauling approach. Tires may be adequate for some routes; tracks are a more specialized option for winter flotation and traction.
- Route width and maneuvering: Check that the machine and any track setup can navigate the access route and intended destination.
- People and gear: Choose a passenger and cargo arrangement that suits your group. Do not assume a general capacity from the model name; consult the operator guide for the specific vehicle.
- Cabin needs: Decide whether an open ATV suits your trip or whether a side-by-side cab, heat, and defrost are worth considering.
Are Can-Am tracks worth considering for deep snow?
BRP describes Apache track systems as designed for Can-Am vehicles and matched to vehicle characteristics. The manufacturer says tracks can improve flotation and traction in deep snow and slippery hauling conditions. That makes tracks the clearest manufacturer-supported upgrade to investigate when ordinary tires are not suitable for the route; it does not establish that every ice-fishing trip needs them.
The Can-Am Defender Apache Backcountry LT track system is one product path for a compatible Defender. BRP’s Canadian Defender store lists the track system separately from multiple Defender-specific mounting kits. The system name alone does not confirm fitment, and a track conversion is a substantial purchase and installation decision. A plow, by contrast, is for clearing snow; it is not a core ice-fishing requirement unless you also need to clear an access area.

Verify fit before buying
Check the model year, trim, drivetrain, VIN, track system, mounting kit, and required accessories against the exact vehicle. BRP cautions that its online “Fits-on” feature is only a suggestion and directs customers to the operator guide or a dealer for compatibility advice. See BRP’s fitment guidance and the Canadian Defender track-system listings. Availability and fitment can vary by market and vehicle.
What cold-weather equipment helps on a Defender?
Can-Am’s winter guidance identifies cab enclosure, heat, and defrost as options for side-by-side vehicles such as the Defender. The exact equipment depends on model and trim, so confirm that the cab and heating components match your machine. The US store has listed a Can-Am Defrost, Heat & Ventilation System and Defender Max rear passenger heater vents; listing presence does not establish compatibility with every Defender or current availability.

- Heavy-Duty UniPlow One-Piece Blade: Multi-position reinforced 60” blade is fully welded and reinforced to withstand heavy-duty applications; includes a two-sided one-piece steel wear bar and adjustable skid pads
- UniPlow Push Tube: Strong, welded push tube design mounts to the ATV frame behind the wheels, not in the front or middle, transferring plow force to the ATV frame for effective, smooth plowing
- Can-Am Outlander Mount: Fits Can-Am Outlander models and offers a quick-release mechanism that allows UniPlow attachment and removal in literally seconds (See product images for the complete up-to-date UniMount Fit Chart)
- All UniPlow One-Box ATV Plow System components are finished in durable black powder-coat; UniPlow carries a one-year warranty
- To use your UniPlow with multiple ATVs, additional mounting kits are available: See UniMount Kit (Extreme Max 5500.5019), Polaris 570 Sportsman UniPlow Mount (Extreme Max 5500.5088), or Cam-Am Outlander UniPlow Mount (Extreme Max 5500.5091)
These options address exposure and cabin comfort, not traction or lake-ice safety. An ATV is more open, so it does not offer the same enclosed-cabin setup described for Defender side-by-sides.
How should you carry fishing gear?
Plan the cargo arrangement around your actual gear and passenger count. A sled or cargo solution may be useful, but the reviewed manufacturer pages do not verify a particular ice-fishing sled or tow configuration. Before towing, check the exact vehicle’s operator guide for its limits and instructions; do not infer a towing capacity from the fact that tracks may help with hauling in slippery conditions.

- 50-inch universal snowplow. Winch NOT included
- Durable steel construction for reliability & longevity.
- Easy, universal attachment on most ATVs.
- Adjustable angling up to 5 different positions for precise control.
- Replaceable gravel skids, steel wear bar, and hardware available separately.
What should you check before winter use?
Can-Am’s general winter preparation guidance calls out maintenance and inspection items including oil, electrical wiring, tire pressure and tread, fuel condition, spark plugs, and the air filter. Use the operator guide for the model-specific procedures and maintenance intervals; the general checklist is not a substitute for it.
- Review the operator guide for the exact model, year, and configuration.
- Inspect the winter-use items Can-Am identifies, following the guide’s procedures and service intervals.
- Confirm that any tracks, mounting kit, cab, heater, or other accessory is compatible with the specific vehicle.
- Plan the route and cargo within the vehicle’s documented limits, and check local rules for access and vehicle use.
Tracks do not make lake ice safe
BRP’s cited winter and accessory guidance does not provide an ice-fishing operating procedure, advice on ice thickness, a lake-access legality determination, or a universal vehicle recommendation. Tracks improve the vehicle’s snow flotation and traction as described by the manufacturer; they do not establish that ice can support the vehicle. Assess frozen-water conditions using current local information and applicable safety guidance, and do not treat a vehicle accessory as proof that a route across a lake is safe or permitted.
