Shorter adults on short trips
A shorter adult can often sit acceptably in the third row when the second row is adjusted forward and the front seats are set for the actual drivers. “Acceptably” is not the same as spacious: the passenger may need to keep both feet in a narrow footwell and may have little room to stretch or change posture. For a restaurant trip or airport run, that compromise may be reasonable.
Taller adults and long-distance passengers
Taller adults are more likely to notice the row’s limitations. Knees can rise toward the second-row seatback, head clearance can become marginal, and entering or exiting may require more contortion than in a larger three-row SUV. A long highway journey magnifies those issues because passengers cannot easily stand, recline, or move to another seat.
How the second row changes third-row comfort

When evaluating a vehicle, set the first-row seats for the people who will actually drive, then place the second-row occupants where they would genuinely sit. Do not slide the middle row unusually far forward simply to create a flattering demonstration of third-row space. If the second row must remain in a position its passengers reject, the apparent third-row room is not useful room.
Getting into the third row
Entry comfort matters as much as the seated dimensions. A person can fit once seated yet dislike the process of reaching the row, stepping around a folded or tilted second-row seat, and finding space for both feet. Check the opening with the second-row seat in the configuration you would use every day. Pay attention to:
- How far the second-row seat slides or tilts to create an opening.
- Whether an adult can pass through without striking the roof, door frame, or seatback.
- Where the feet land when entering, especially if another passenger is already seated.
- Whether the exit route remains manageable for the shortest or least mobile passenger.
- Whether child seats or other equipment block the preferred access side.
Entry is a real-world constraint because a third-row passenger may need to get out at a curb, fuel stop, or emergency without asking everyone else to leave the vehicle. Test both sides if your family will use them interchangeably.

How the Highlander compares with larger three-row SUVs
The Highlander occupies a middle ground: it offers three rows in a vehicle that is easier to manage than many larger SUVs, but its rearmost seats are not as generous as those in the biggest three-row models. An Associated Press report describing an Edmunds comparison said the Highlander and Kia Sorento had less third-row legroom than larger three-row SUVs. That comparison characterized the space as potentially sufficient for occasional use by bigger children or teenagers, not as a guarantee for full-size adults.

This distinction matters when choosing between vehicle types. If adults will occupy the third row every day, prioritize a model designed around a larger passenger compartment rather than assuming a nominal seven- or eight-seat rating means all seats are equally comfortable. Toyota’s larger Grand Highlander is a logical vehicle to investigate in that situation, but its current dimensions and configurations should be checked separately; the Highlander figures above do not describe it.

Why published measurements can disagree
Different publications do not always report the same Highlander dimensions. A Consumer Reports listing from 2025 shows 22.5 inches of third-seat legroom and 50 inches of shoulder room, while Toyota’s 2026 U.S. specification lists 28.0 inches and 55.0 inches respectively. Those figures should not be blended into a single “true” number. They refer to different publication years, and the available material does not establish whether the difference comes from model-year changes, measurement conventions, seat configuration, or a publication error.
Toyota UK published a separate 2022 article giving 703 millimeters of third-row legroom and describing the sliding second row as helping provide “spacious third-row accommodation for two adults.” That is a United Kingdom market statement for a 2022 vehicle. It should not be treated as a direct measurement of every U.S.-market Highlander or as proof that the 2026 U.S. row will feel spacious to two adults.
The practical rule is to keep each measurement attached to its market, model year, trim, and source. Use Toyota’s 2026 U.S. numbers as the baseline when shopping for that vehicle, then verify the actual vehicle because seating hardware and adjustment range can vary.

A step-by-step fit test before you buy
- Bring the intended passengers. A salesperson’s demonstration or an empty seat cannot reveal how your family’s body sizes will interact with the row.
- Set the front seats normally. Have the actual drivers adjust their seats and steering wheels to their preferred positions before anyone judges rear space.
- Place second-row occupants realistically. Give them the legroom and recline they would accept on an ordinary trip; do not force them into an artificially tight position.
- Enter through the normal access route. Test the side you would use with child seats, bags, or other passengers in place.
- Check head, knee, shoulder, and foot clearance. Sit upright, place both feet naturally, and note whether knees press into the second-row seatback or shoulders contact neighboring passengers.
- Try the row with all seats occupied. A single adult may fit comfortably while two or three adults feel constrained by shoulder and hip room.
- Stay seated for a representative period. Spend enough time to notice pressure points and whether you can change posture. A one-minute showroom visit can hide discomfort that appears after an hour.
- Repeat the test with luggage if necessary. Confirm that the cargo you carry does not make third-row access difficult or leave passengers without the space they need.
- Practice exiting. Have the third-row passenger leave while the second row is occupied. If the process is awkward when the vehicle is stationary, it will be worse at a busy curb.
Cargo and seating trade-offs
With all three rows in use, the Highlander must divide its interior between passengers and luggage. Toyota’s 2025 announcement for the 2026 model cites up to 84.3 cubic feet of cargo capacity with the second and third rows folded. That maximum applies to a folded-seat configuration; it does not describe the cargo room available while adults occupy the third row. Families should measure or test their normal bags behind the raised third row rather than relying on the maximum headline figure.
If your regular trips require several adults, several suitcases, sports equipment, or a stroller, the space decision is not only whether people can sit. It is whether everyone can sit while the items they actually carry remain inside the vehicle without obstructing the rear area.

- Ignoring the second row. Rear passengers gain space only if middle-row occupants are willing to give some up.
- Testing an empty vehicle. Real passengers, child seats, and luggage change access and posture.
- Assuming one model year represents all others. The 2026 U.S. measurements, 2025 third-seat listing, and 2022 UK figure are not interchangeable.
- Confusing marketing language with a fit test. Toyota’s description of a “well-appointed three row interior” is promotional wording, not an independent adult-comfort measurement.
Should you choose the Highlander for regular adult third-row use?
Choose the Highlander when the third row is mainly for children, teenagers, shorter adults, or occasional rides and the vehicle’s other priorities suit you. Its published dimensions support the conclusion that adults can physically sit there, but they do not support calling the row roomy for every adult.
Look at larger three-row alternatives when two or more adults will occupy the back frequently, when journeys are long, or when middle-row passengers cannot give up legroom. Make that decision after an in-person comparison with the adults who will actually ride there. The best vehicle is the one that preserves acceptable space for every occupied row, not the one with the highest seating number on its specification sheet.

Toyota announced the 2026 U.S. Highlander on September 5, 2025. The figures in this article are tied to that U.S. model-year information. Toyota’s 2022 UK article describes a different market and year, while Consumer Reports’ 2025 listing reports different third-seat measurements. Before signing a purchase agreement, confirm the trim, seat arrangement, and current dimensions for the vehicle sold in your region.
