There is no safe yes-or-no answer for every Prius. What the car can do depends on which component has failed and the vehicle’s fault state. Toyota documents reduced-power fail-safe driving for a specific inverter problem in certain older models, but that does not show that a Prius can generally keep running with a failed high-voltage hybrid battery. If your Prius displays a hybrid-system warning, arrange prompt diagnosis rather than relying on continued driving.
Can you drive a Prius with a failed hybrid battery?
A Prius uses its hybrid system as part of vehicle operation; it is not a conventional gasoline-only car that can be assumed to run normally after the high-voltage traction battery fails. Toyota’s available guidance does not establish that a Prius with a confirmed failed traction battery is safe or able to continue driving. The answer for a particular car requires its model year, symptoms, warning text and diagnostic trouble codes.

Do not treat the fact that some Prius faults can trigger a reduced-power mode as permission to drive with a suspected battery failure. If the vehicle reports a hybrid-system malfunction, have it inspected promptly by a Toyota dealer or a qualified hybrid repair shop.
What does a “check hybrid system” warning mean?
A warning message or indicator signals that the car needs attention; it does not, by itself, prove the traction battery is the failed part. Toyota’s 2026 U.S. Prius owner’s manual says a malfunction indicator may point to a hybrid-system malfunction, among other possible issues, and instructs owners to have the vehicle inspected by a Toyota dealer immediately. Read and record the exact dashboard message and warning lamps, then have the fault diagnosed.

Could it be the 12-volt battery instead?
Yes. The 12-volt auxiliary battery and the high-voltage hybrid traction battery are different components with different jobs. A discharged 12-volt battery can prevent the hybrid system from starting; dim lights or a weak horn can be clues to a low-voltage problem, but they do not confirm the cause. Toyota’s 2026 manual gives a jump-start procedure for the 12-volt battery and recommends dealer inspection afterward. It also says push-starting cannot start the hybrid system.
A 12-volt jump-start does not repair or recharge a failed traction battery. Follow the instructions for your exact model and market, and do not try to treat the two batteries as interchangeable.
Why Toyota’s inverter fail-safe example is not proof a failed battery is drivable
Toyota’s U.S. Customer Confidence Program 23TE03, published February 16, 2023, describes a specific inverter/IPM failure condition on certain 2010–2015 Prius and 2012–2017 Prius V vehicles. In that program’s context, Toyota says the car may enter fail-safe mode, with reduced available power and speed, and should be taken immediately to an authorized Toyota dealer for diagnosis and repair. This is a fault-specific example—not a general statement about traction-battery failure.

The program lists coverage for 20 years from the vehicle’s date of first use, with no mileage limitation, for the specified inverter/IPM condition, subject to its terms and dealer verification. It is not a general warranty for the hybrid traction battery. If your car falls within those model years, ask an authorized Toyota dealer to check eligibility and diagnose the problem.

- Note the details: Record the exact warning text, illuminated lamps, symptoms and when they began. Avoid assuming the traction battery is at fault based on a warning alone.
- Arrange diagnosis: Contact a Toyota dealer or qualified hybrid repair shop. Share the model year, Prius generation and any diagnostic trouble codes available.
- Do not rely on fail-safe driving: Toyota’s documented reduced-power example concerns a particular inverter/IPM fault, not every hybrid fault. Follow professional advice about whether the vehicle should be moved or towed.
- Consider parts only after confirmation: Ask the technician to identify the failed component and verify the correct fitment for your exact vehicle before seeking a replacement battery.
When is a replacement hybrid battery the right next step?
Only after diagnosis confirms that the high-voltage traction battery has failed. Toyota says the traction battery has a limited service life and directs owners to a dealer if it becomes fully discharged and the hybrid system cannot be started using the 12-volt battery. That guidance is not a substitute for diagnosing the cause of a no-start or warning.
For a confirmed replacement, compare options using the vehicle’s year and generation, whether the part is OEM or replacement, warranty terms, installed cost, installer qualifications and any applicable Toyota coverage. The information available here does not establish a part number, current price or one best repair choice for an unspecified Prius.
