Ford has reportedly shown dealers an early four-door Mustang prototype, but it has not publicly confirmed that the sedan is approved for production. A possible 2028 or 2029 arrival, a starting price below $40,000, sub-four-second acceleration to 60 mph and a hybrid powertrain are all reported expectations—not finalized specifications.
Did Ford show dealers a Mustang sedan?
According to Car and Driver’s August 10, 2026 report, Ford showed dealers an early four-door Mustang prototype at a Las Vegas event the previous week. The report attributes the account to the Wall Street Journal and Automotive News. Road & Track also summarized Automotive News reporting based on unnamed dealer representatives who attended the event.

A dealer presentation is not the same as a public announcement that Ford has approved the car for production. The accounts describe an early prototype; the sources reviewed do not provide a Ford production confirmation or final specification sheet.

How might a four-door fit into the Mustang family?
In a June 2026 report, Car and Driver reproduced comments from Andrew Frick, Ford Blue and Model e president, in an Automotive News interview. Frick said Ford wanted to expand the Mustang family, while making any new vehicle fit within a family Ford already offered. Those remarks showed that the idea was under consideration; they did not announce an approved sedan.

Frick also described a smaller sedan market than in the past: “There is a percentage of the customer base that still buys sedans,” he told Automotive News. “It’s a lot smaller than it once was. It used to be 50 percent, now it’s 16, 17 percent. We have a really great Mustang that people consider a car. We look to expand on the Mustang family as we move forward.” The 50 percent and 16–17 percent figures are Frick’s remarks as reproduced in that report; the coverage does not specify the market, geography or measurement basis, so they should not be read as independently verified market statistics.
On the fit within Ford’s lineup, Frick said: “It’s going to have to make sense within our portfolio. It’s going to have to make sense within a family that we may already offer.”

What does the Panamera comparison mean?
Dealer representatives reportedly compared the prototype’s size and design to a Porsche Panamera. That is an impression attributed to event attendees, not a measured dimension, confirmation of the final body design or proof that Ford considers the Porsche a direct rival. The existing Mustang is a coupe or convertible; the reported prototype’s defining change is the addition of four doors.

- Whether Ford has approved the sedan for production.
- Whether it will use the Mustang name, the rumored Mach 4 name or another designation.
- Its final launch timing, price, powertrain, performance and trim structure.
- Whether the prototype’s appearance and proportions will carry through to a production vehicle.
The dealer-event details depend on reporting that cites unnamed representatives and sources. Until Ford makes a public announcement, the prototype and its reported numbers are best treated as an indication of a possible Mustang-family expansion—not a confirmed new model.
