A small electric pickup can tow a trailer, but only within the exact ratings for its trim, battery, drivetrain, tow package and hitch setup. Before connecting anything, verify the maximum loaded trailer weight, vehicle payload, tongue-weight limit, gross combination weight rating (GCWR), receiver rating, wiring and brake-control equipment. Towing also increases energy use, so an EV that is adequate for daily driving may need shorter charging legs and more conservative range planning when it is pulling a trailer.
What determines how much an electric pickup can tow?
The number in a brochure is a ceiling for a particular configuration, not a universal capability for every truck wearing the same model name. A different cab, battery, drive system, axle ratio, tire, cooling setup or factory package can change the limit. Passengers, cargo, accessories and the trailer’s own loaded weight also matter.

Use the vehicle’s current owner’s manual and the driver’s-door tire and loading label as the controlling references. The manual should identify maximum loaded trailer weight, maximum tongue load, payload, GCWR, receiver limits and any restrictions on trailer size or frontal area.

The Chevrolet range number, for example, is not a promise that the truck can travel 478 miles while towing. Range estimates are made under specified test conditions; a trailer changes the load, aerodynamics and energy demand.

Why the hitch can change the rating
A receiver may have one rating when used as a conventional hitch and another when used with a weight-distributing (WD) hitch. A WD system transfers part of the trailer’s vertical load toward the trailer axle and the truck’s front axle through spring bars. That can restore front-axle loading and improve stability, but it does not automatically make every trailer or receiver suitable for the higher number.
Rivian’s 2024 owner’s guide states: “The R1T can tow up to 11,000 lbs (4,989 kg) using a weight distributing hitch, and up to 5,000 lbs (2,267 kg) using a standard hitch.” Treat those as separate, conditional ratings. If your setup does not meet the manufacturer’s WD requirements, the lower standard-hitch limit applies.
When a weight-distributing hitch is appropriate
- Use one only when the truck and receiver manufacturer permit it and specify the required hardware or adjustment.
- Match the spring-bar rating to the trailer’s actual loaded tongue weight, not merely its empty or advertised weight.
- Follow clearance instructions for the electric pickup’s bumper, underbody components, sensors and spare-tire area.
- Do not assume a WD hitch replaces proper loading, functional trailer brakes or a sway-control procedure.
Tongue weight, payload and GCWR: the limits that are easy to miss
Tongue weight is the downward force the loaded trailer places on the hitch. Rivian recommends approximately 10% of total loaded trailer weight. A 4,000-pound loaded trailer would therefore suggest roughly 400 pounds of tongue weight as a starting point, subject to the truck, hitch and trailer instructions. The actual permitted tongue load may be lower than that rule of thumb, so the vehicle’s stated limit always wins.

That tongue load uses the pickup’s payload. Payload is not just what is in the bed: it includes the driver, passengers, tools, accessories, hitch hardware and the portion of trailer weight pressing on the receiver. If a door label lists 1,400 pounds of available payload and occupants and cargo total 900 pounds, only 500 pounds remains for tongue load and other added equipment. This is an illustrative calculation, not a rating for any particular truck.
GCWR is the maximum permitted combined weight of the loaded truck and loaded trailer. A truck can be below its trailer maximum yet exceed GCWR if the cab, bed and tongue load are heavy. Weigh the complete combination when a setup is close to any limit, and use the lower limit whenever two ratings conflict.
Load the trailer for stability
- Place heavy items low and near the trailer axle group.
- Keep the center of mass from shifting rearward; excessive rear loading can encourage sway.
- Secure cargo so braking, bumps and charging-stop movement cannot change the tongue weight.
- Recheck the loaded tongue weight after adding water, fuel, bicycles or recreational equipment.
What tow hardware does a small electric pickup need?
A factory tow package can include more than a receiver. Ford’s 4K Tow Package identifies a Class III receiver, a 4-/7-pin connector and a trailer brake controller, and Ford requires that package for trailers over 2,000 pounds on the covered configuration. That is why an apparently identical truck without the package may not have the same legal or technical capability.

Receiver and connector
Confirm the receiver class, maximum trailer weight and maximum tongue weight on the truck’s documentation. Then identify whether your trailer uses a four-pin connector for basic lighting or a seven-pin connector that commonly supports additional circuits such as electric brakes and auxiliary power. The plug must match the truck’s socket and be wired correctly; an adapter changes the physical connection but does not add a brake controller or increase a rating.
Trailer brakes and controller
Heavy trailers need their own brakes, and many jurisdictions set legal thresholds. An integrated or approved electronic brake controller lets the tow vehicle apply the trailer brakes in proportion to the truck’s braking. Test the controller at low speed in a safe location before entering traffic. If the truck reports a wiring or brake fault, stop and repair it rather than towing on the truck’s brakes alone.
Frontal area
A tall, wide trailer creates aerodynamic drag even when its scale weight is within the limit. Ford warns that exceeding the listed trailer frontal-area limit can significantly reduce performance. Check that dimension in the manual; do not substitute an assumption based only on weight.

How towing changes electric range
Towing reduces efficiency for any vehicle, according to guidance from Edmunds reported by The Associated Press, and the effect is more consequential for an EV because the energy reserve is finite and charging takes a planned stop. Trailer mass raises rolling and acceleration demand, while frontal area can increase aerodynamic drag substantially at highway speed.
There is no single reliable percentage to subtract from the dashboard range. The result depends on trailer weight, height and shape, speed, wind, hills, temperature, payload, tire pressure, road surface and traffic. Treat the truck’s unladen estimate as a reference rather than a towing guarantee.
Plan a towing route
- Use shorter charging legs than you would for an empty truck and keep a larger reserve for wind, grades and detours.
- Check that charging sites have an approach and parking arrangement that can accommodate the full truck-and-trailer combination; a station that fits a solo pickup may require unhitching when towing.
- Allow extra time for charging because a trailer can make every stop more consequential and may require a lower arrival-state target.
- Record actual energy use on the first trip. That measured consumption is more useful for the same trailer and route than a generic online estimate.
Pre-hitch checklist: a safe sequence
- Identify the exact truck. Record model year, trim, battery, drivetrain, tires and factory tow equipment. Do not rely on a dealer listing or a badge alone.
- Read the manual and door label. Find maximum loaded trailer weight, tongue load, payload, GCWR, receiver limits and any frontal-area restriction.
- Weigh the real load. Include trailer structure, water, fuel, propane, equipment and every item added after purchase. Use the loaded number, not dry weight.
- Calculate payload headroom. Add driver, passengers, bed cargo, accessories, hitch hardware and the expected tongue weight. Confirm the total remains within the label’s payload.
- Check the hitch condition and type. Confirm the receiver class and whether the selected trailer rating requires a WD hitch. Install only equipment approved for that vehicle.
- Verify wiring and braking. Match four-pin or seven-pin connectors, confirm a working brake controller when required, inspect the breakaway system and test all lights.
- Inspect the trailer. Check coupler latch, safety chains, jack, tires, wheel fasteners and load restraints. Cross safety chains under the coupler without allowing them to drag.
- Set the load and tire pressures. Distribute cargo to achieve the permitted tongue weight, then inflate truck and trailer tires to the pressure specified for the loaded condition.
- Plan the route for range. Locate compatible charging stops with trailer-friendly access, account for weather and grades, and avoid planning to arrive with no reserve.
- Perform a low-speed test. Check steering feel, brake response, controller operation, turn signals and trailer stability before joining faster traffic.
How to compare electric pickups without being misled by headline numbers
Build a like-for-like comparison. A higher maximum is not automatically better if it requires hardware you do not own, leaves little payload for passengers or cannot reach your route’s chargers with the trailer attached.

Common mistakes and what to do instead
Using the model’s biggest number for every trim
Problem: The maximum belongs to a package or configuration different from yours. Fix: Match the manual’s table to the VIN-level trim and installed tow equipment, then use the lower applicable rating.
Counting only the trailer’s empty weight
Problem: Cargo, fluids and accessories push the loaded trailer over its limit or increase tongue weight beyond payload. Fix: Weigh the ready-to-travel trailer and include that figure in every calculation.
Assuming a seven-pin plug means braking is ready
Problem: The connector may be present while the controller, settings or trailer wiring is not functional. Fix: Confirm controller operation and test the trailer brakes before departure.

Problem: Wind, speed and trailer drag consume energy faster than the estimate predicts. Fix: Shorten charging legs, preserve a reserve and use measured consumption from the first trip to refine later plans.
Ignoring sway or a changing load
Problem: Rearward cargo movement, incorrect tongue weight or excessive speed can make the trailer unstable. Fix: Slow smoothly, avoid abrupt steering, stop safely and correct the loading or hitch setup before continuing. If sway persists, do not continue at highway speed.
Bottom line for a first towing trip
A small electric pickup is a viable tow vehicle when the complete combination stays inside its configuration-specific trailer, tongue, payload, receiver and GCWR limits, with the required hitch, connector and braking hardware installed. Check those figures on the current truck documents, load and test the trailer, and plan charging around the reduced efficiency rather than the empty-truck range display. If any rating or equipment requirement is unclear, postpone hitching until the manufacturer or a qualified trailer specialist confirms the setup.
