Sometimes, but only temporarily and only while the tracker’s remaining systems work. If thieves disconnect the car battery, a tracker with a charged internal backup battery may continue calculating positions and sending updates for a limited period. If they remove the SIM or disable cellular service, the tracker may still determine its position from GPS signals, but a cellular model generally cannot send that new position to your app until communications are restored. GPS positioning and remote reporting are separate functions, so neither a backup battery nor a hidden installation guarantees recovery.
What a vehicle tracker must do to show you a location
A tracking system performs three different jobs:
- Power: The vehicle’s electrical system, an internal rechargeable battery, or both keep the electronics running.
- Positioning: The GPS receiver listens to satellite broadcasts and calculates latitude, longitude, time and, in many devices, speed.
- Communications: A cellular modem and SIM send the calculated position to the manufacturer’s server, which displays it in an app or web dashboard.
GPS satellites transmit one-way signals. GPS.gov describes the space segment as satellites that “transmit one-way signals that give the current GPS satellite position and time.” The satellites themselves do not receive a car’s location or forward it to the owner; the receiver in the tracker does the calculation. A tracker therefore needs usable satellite reception and power to know where it is, and a separate working communications path to tell you.

That distinction explains both removal scenarios. Cutting vehicle power attacks the first function. Removing a SIM or disabling service attacks the third. The result is not an all-or-nothing “GPS works” or “GPS is dead” condition.

What happens when thieves disconnect the car battery?
Trackers with internal backup power
A hardwired or OBD-II unit normally draws power from the car. If it also contains a charged backup battery, it may remain on after external power disappears. Depending on the model, it can send a power-loss or tamper alert and continue transmitting positions until the backup is depleted. The actual period depends on battery capacity, update frequency, temperature, network coverage and the device’s power-saving behavior.

Do not treat “backup battery” as a promise of live tracking for a standard number of hours. For example, Salind says its Salind 01 can report for up to 12 hours after power is cut. GPX says its AssetTrack OBD can report for up to 12 hours depending on tracking frequency and signal conditions. Those are vendor claims for specific products, not independent comparative tests or a guarantee for every installation. Spytec describes backup operation as brief on the cited product material but does not state a duration there.
Trackers without backup power
A unit powered only by the vehicle will shut down when its supply is removed. It cannot calculate a fresh GPS position, detect movement or transmit an alert after that point. You may still see the last location recorded before the battery was disconnected, but that is not evidence that the car remains there.
Final records and tamper alerts
Some devices preserve a short final record when power is interrupted. Geotab says its Next Gen GO sends a tamper alert when power is cut, and that its GO Plus preserves the final five seconds of vehicle data, including speed and location. This is a narrow, product-specific behavior. It should not be interpreted as proof that every tracker continues live tracking after a battery cable is severed.

What the owner may see
If the backup battery is charged and the tracker can reach satellites and the cellular network, the app may show a power-loss notification followed by additional points. If any of those conditions fail, you may see only the alert, a final point, delayed points or no new data. A tracker hidden behind trim can be harder for a casual thief to unplug, but concealment does not make it impossible to find or disable.
Can you track the car if the SIM card is removed?
GPS can still calculate a position
Removing a SIM does not automatically stop the GPS receiver. If the device still has power and an unobstructed-enough view of the sky, it can continue calculating positions internally. GPS reception can be degraded by metal enclosures, underground parking, dense structures, weather-related effects and receiver conditions.
Cellular reporting usually stops
A cellular tracker needs an active, supported SIM and a compatible network connection to upload a new position. With the SIM removed, suspended or unable to register, the tracker generally cannot deliver current locations to the service or your phone. Your app will normally stop updating, even though the receiver may still be working inside the car.

Offline storage is model-specific
Some products store points in local memory and attempt to upload them when service returns. Others discard unsent points or retain only a limited history. The available product information does not establish a universal offline-history guarantee, so check the exact model’s documentation for storage capacity, upload behavior and what happens after a SIM or network outage. Do not assume that replacing the SIM later will recreate every missed location.
What a SIM removal does not affect
It does not disable a wired alarm input, motion sensor or local memory by itself. Those features can continue operating if the tracker has power, but they are useful to you remotely only when the device can communicate. A GPS receiver is not a complete remote-tracking service without a working data path.
Which tracker design is most resilient?

A hardwired unit can reduce the chance of an immediate casual unplug, while a standalone unit avoids a single point of failure at the vehicle battery. Neither design prevents a determined thief from locating the device, shielding its antenna, removing its battery or disrupting communications.

How to evaluate a tracker before installation
- Identify the power source. Confirm whether the device is OBD-II, hardwired, internally battery-powered or a combination. Ask how it behaves when external power falls below a threshold.
- Read the backup specification in context. Record the claimed runtime, update interval, temperature range and signal assumptions. “Up to 12 hours” is not equivalent to 12 hours of continuous reporting in every vehicle.
- Check tamper events. Look for named alerts such as external-power loss, unplugging, tow or movement. Verify whether the alert is sent immediately or only during the next scheduled check-in.
- Verify cellular compatibility. Check supported bands, network generation, coverage in the countries where the car travels, roaming rules and whether the supplied SIM can be replaced. A tracker that works on one network may be unusable where that network has no coverage.
- Ask about offline behavior. Determine how many points the device can store without service, whether timestamps are preserved and whether it uploads the backlog automatically when it reconnects.
- Plan installation and access. A concealed hardwired installation should not interfere with airbags, wiring harnesses or service procedures. Keep installation documentation and the device identifier for police and the service provider.
- Test the failure paths legally and safely. With the vehicle stationary, test a controlled power interruption and review the resulting alert. Do not remove a SIM while driving, and do not create a situation that could disable safety systems.
Common failure modes and what they mean
The app shows a power-loss alert, then nothing
The backup battery may be depleted, disconnected or too small for the selected update rate. The tracker may also be inside a garage or metal structure with poor GPS or cellular reception. Treat the alert as evidence of an interruption, not as proof that the car is still moving.
The last point is old but the device appears online
The receiver may be failing to obtain a usable satellite fix while the modem remains registered. Check whether the dashboard distinguishes “last communication” from “last GPS fix.” A recent server contact does not necessarily mean the coordinates are current.
The tracker worked until the SIM was removed
That pattern is consistent with a communications failure. Confirm whether the SIM is still active, whether the account is suspended, whether the device requires a particular carrier or access-point setting and whether the car is outside the plan’s coverage area. Reinstalling a compatible, activated SIM may restore reporting, but it cannot recover positions the device never stored.

There is no alert when the OBD unit is unplugged
The device may lack an unplug sensor, have no charged backup cell, be configured for infrequent check-ins or have been disconnected where cellular service was unavailable. Review the model’s event settings and perform a stationary test before relying on that alert.
Locations stop updating in a basement or container
Satellite signals and cellular signals can both be blocked or weakened by concrete, metal and surrounding structures. A later point after the vehicle exits the obstruction may be the first reliable fix. This is a reception limitation, not necessarily evidence that the tracker was removed.

What to do if the car is stolen
- Contact local law enforcement immediately. Give officers the tracker’s recent locations, timestamps, device identifier, vehicle description and any power-loss or tamper alerts. Follow their instructions; do not confront anyone or attempt a recovery yourself.
- Preserve the account record. Export or screenshot the timeline, alert history and last known coordinates before data retention or a device reset removes them.
- Call the tracking provider. Ask whether the device has checked in since the apparent power cut, whether it has stored offline points and whether the account or SIM can be locked to prevent unauthorized changes.
- Interpret silence cautiously. No new point can mean a dead backup battery, removed SIM, blocked reception, disabled service or a tracker that was physically removed. It does not identify which failure occurred.
- Notify your insurer and finance or lease company as required. Provide the official police report and the tracker records rather than relying on an unverified map pin.
Limits you should accept before relying on a tracker
- There is no universal backup-runtime figure. Manufacturer numbers are model- and condition-specific.
- A GPS receiver cannot report through an absent cellular path unless the device has another supported communications method.
- Satellite reception can fail or become inaccurate when the antenna is blocked or the device is surrounded by structures.
- Hardwiring and concealment improve resistance to casual tampering, not immunity from a determined thief.
- No tracker guarantees vehicle recovery. Its value is providing timely, usable information when power, positioning and communications remain available.
