Sometimes, but not automatically. A defensive-driving, driver-improvement or accident-prevention course can qualify you for an insurance discount, reduce points already on your license, prevent points from being assessed for a qualifying citation, or keep a ticket and points from being reported to your insurer. Those are different outcomes, and each depends on the state that controls your license or ticket, the exact approved course, your eligibility, deadlines and your insurer’s rules.
A course normally does not erase a ticket or conviction. Before paying, identify the program’s purpose, confirm that the provider is approved for that purpose and ask your insurer how completion evidence must be submitted.

What a defensive-driving course can—and cannot—do
The phrase “remove points” covers several state procedures. Treating them as interchangeable can lead to paying for the wrong class or expecting a premium change that never applies.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →| Possible result | What happens | What usually remains |
|---|---|---|
| Reduce points already accumulated | A state grants a credit against points currently on your motor-vehicle record. | The underlying conviction or violation may remain, and frequency limits apply. |
| Prevent points from being assessed | A court diversion or similar program keeps points from being added for an eligible citation after you complete the required course. | The citation, court record or other conditions can still exist. |
| Prevent reporting to an insurer | A state course keeps a ticket and points from being sent to the insurer under a specific program. | The ticket stays on the driving record; this is not expungement. |
| Earn safe-driving credits | A DMV adds positive points or credits that may improve a balance under its own rules. | Positive credits do not automatically cancel violation points or create an insurance discount. |
| Lower an insurance premium | An insurer applies a state-authorized reduction to specified coverage for a stated period. | The discount may not apply to the entire policy or to every driver. |
There is no nationwide guarantee. State agencies, courts and insurers use different names, forms and eligibility rules. The state connected to the license or citation—not where you happen to take an online class—normally controls the legal effect.

Will taking a defensive driving course lower my car insurance?
It can, if both the state and your insurer recognize that exact course for your driver and policy. The amount is not a national average, and an advertised percentage may apply only to certain coverages rather than the whole premium. Ask whether the reduction is recurring, how long it lasts, whether it renews and when it will appear on your policy.
State examples of insurance reductions
| Jurisdiction | Published rule | Important limits |
|---|---|---|
| Delaware | Up to 10% off a portion of auto insurance for three years after an approved course. A refresher taken within 180 days before that term ends may qualify for up to 15% off a portion for three years. | The Delaware Department of Insurance requires an approved course; the percentage is not stated as a reduction of the entire policy. |
| Florida | An insurer may apply an approved-course reduction of up to 10% on specified coverages for three years. | Statutory conditions apply, including restrictions connected with a court appearance. Read Florida Statutes § 627.06501 (2025) and confirm the insurer’s procedure. |
| Virginia | Some insurers may offer a discount to drivers age 55 or older who complete a mature-driver accident-prevention course. | A court-assigned clinic does not qualify for the insurance reduction, and a course taken for that reduction does not earn Virginia safe-driving points. |
| New York | Approved Point and Insurance Reduction Program (PIRP) courses are designed to reduce points and insurance premiums. | Use the DMV’s approved sponsoring-agency information and ask the provider about its fee and completion reporting: New York DMV PIRP and IPIRP. |
These figures are ceilings or examples in named state programs, not typical savings elsewhere. Your insurer can still determine whether you qualify, which coverages receive the reduction and when the change takes effect. The official rules cited here do not establish a universal processing time, so do not assume the discount starts immediately after the final lesson.
Can I take a defensive driving course to get points off my license?
Sometimes. The key question is whether your state offers a point-credit course, a citation-diversion program or a reporting-protection course. Check whether points must already be present, whether the ticket is eligible, how often you may use the option and whether a court must authorize it.

New Jersey: a two-point credit
The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission describes a state-approved defensive-driving course that can remove two accumulated points. You may use the credit once every five years, and points must be on your record when you complete the course. An insurance reduction may also be available, but you must confirm it with your insurer. Details and provider requirements are on the New Jersey MVC Driver Programs page.

Georgia: up to seven points
Eligible Georgia residents may request a reduction of up to seven points once every five years through the state’s defensive-driving program. The Georgia Department of Driver Services also distinguishes license-related use from other course purposes and places limitations on online courses for license matters. Verify the accepted format and request procedure in the Georgia DDS Defensive Driving Program FAQs before enrolling.
Arizona: no points assessed through citation diversion
Arizona’s defensive-driving diversion program can result in no points being assessed for an eligible citation. That is different from subtracting points already on your record. Citation type, prior use of the program and the court’s completion deadline can make you ineligible. Follow the current court instructions in the Arizona Judicial Branch Defensive Driving Program FAQs.
Michigan: points and insurer reporting prevented, ticket retained
A qualifying Michigan Basic Driver Improvement Course (BDIC) can keep points from being posted and prevent the ticket and points from being reported to your insurer. The ticket remains on your driving record, so this is not deletion. The Michigan Department of State gives eligible drivers 60 days after notice to complete the course and limits the opportunity to one pass. Check the current eligibility rules at Michigan BDIC eligibility.

Virginia: positive safe-driving points
Virginia may award five safe-driving points once every 24 months, up to a five-point balance, after an eligible clinic. These are positive credits, not a cancellation of demerit points. The Virginia DMV specifically says a course taken for an insurance reduction does not earn safe-driving points, and a court-assigned clinic does not qualify for the insurance reduction. See Virginia DMV Driver Improvement.

How to check whether a course will help you
- Identify the controlling state. Use the state that issued your license or is handling the citation. If your license and ticket are from different states, check both agencies and the court.
- Define the result you need. Decide whether you want a premium discount, a point credit, diversion with no points assessed, protection from insurer reporting or a safe-driving credit. A course approved for one purpose may not qualify for another.
- Read the official eligibility page. Check the citation type, current point balance, age requirement, prior-course history, court status, residency, delivery format and any exclusion for a court-assigned course.
- Confirm the provider is approved. Use the state DMV, motor-vehicle commission, insurance department or court list. Do not rely only on a school’s claim that it is “state accepted.”
- Check the deadline before enrolling. Some programs require completion before a court date; others start a fixed period after a notice. Michigan’s BDIC, for example, uses a 60-day completion period after notice, while Arizona diversion requires completion by the court deadline.
- Ask the insurer specific questions. Give the representative the exact course name, provider, state approval and your policy number. Ask which coverages receive the reduction, the percentage, duration, renewal conditions, effective date and acceptable proof.
- Save every document. Keep enrollment confirmation, payment receipt, completion certificate, court disposition and insurer correspondence. Ask who sends completion data and whether you must upload or mail anything.
- Verify the result. Check your motor-vehicle record or court disposition for the point outcome, then review a later policy declaration page for the insurance change. If either result is missing, contact the issuing agency or insurer with your documents.
Why a court course may not produce an insurance discount
A judge can order a class to satisfy a ticket or sentencing condition, while an insurer discount is a separate underwriting benefit. States may expressly exclude court-assigned clinics from discounts, as Virginia does. Florida’s statute also includes conditions tied to court appearance. Conversely, a course selected for an insurance reduction may not satisfy a court’s diversion or point-credit requirements.
Ask two separate approval questions: “Will this satisfy the court or DMV requirement for my citation?” and “Will my insurer apply a discount to this policy for this exact course?” A “yes” to one does not answer the other.
What the discount actually changes
A percentage reduction may apply to liability, personal-injury protection, collision, comprehensive or another specified portion rather than to every premium component. State rules can set a maximum while the insurer determines the operational amount. The discount also may be limited to the driver who completed the course, not every vehicle or household driver.
Ask whether a later violation, policy change, cancellation or renewal resets eligibility. Keep the insurer’s written explanation because an agency approval list proves course eligibility, not the amount your particular policy will save.

Common mistakes and how to fix them
Enrolling before checking the ticket
Some citations are excluded, and diversion programs may limit repeat use. Contact the court or DMV first; if you already enrolled, ask whether the course can be transferred or refunded before assuming it will count.
Calling every result “point removal”
Use the precise term in your records: reduced points, no points assessed, no insurer reporting, or safe-driving credit. This prevents confusion when an insurer still sees a ticket on a driving record or when a DMV balance does not change.
Assuming online delivery is accepted
Georgia’s license-related rules, for example, limit the use of online courses. Confirm the permitted format, identity checks and testing method before paying.

Ignoring the repeat-use interval
New Jersey and Georgia publish five-year limits for their point reductions; Michigan’s BDIC is a one-time opportunity under its eligibility rules, and Virginia’s safe-driving credit uses a 24-month interval. Check your prior course date in the state record.
Assuming a ticket disappeared
Michigan’s BDIC illustrates the distinction: points and insurer reporting can be prevented while the ticket remains on the driving record. Request the agency’s exact record treatment if future employers, courts or insurers may review it.
A practical decision guide
- You have a recent eligible ticket and a court deadline: ask the court about diversion or an assigned course first; then separately ask the insurer whether any discount is allowed.
- You already have points: look for a state point-credit program and verify the minimum point balance, five-year or other frequency limit and completion timing.
- You want lower premiums without a ticket: search the insurance department or DMV for an approved accident-prevention or mature-driver course, then obtain written confirmation from your insurer.
- You are comparing two providers: choose the one on the official approved list that meets your deadline and format requirement; compare fee, test rules, reporting method and refund policy, not just the marketing percentage.
- Your state is not represented by these examples: do not extrapolate Delaware’s 10% or Florida’s 10% ceiling, New Jersey’s two points or Georgia’s seven points. Find your own state’s current rule.
The safest sequence is approval first, payment second, completion proof third and insurer confirmation last. That sequence cannot guarantee a discount or point change, but it prevents the most expensive error: completing a legitimate course that was never approved for your particular purpose.
