When the CNG tank is empty, many documented systems switch the engine to petrol while you are driving. Others require the driver to select petrol, and aftermarket conversions can behave differently. The owner’s manual for your exact make, model, year and market is the authority.
What happens when a CNG car runs out of gas?
A bi-fuel car has two separate fuel systems: a petrol tank and one or more high-pressure CNG cylinders. The engine-control system meters fuel from one system at a time. If the CNG supply reaches its usable limit, a vehicle that supports automatic fallback closes the CNG supply and begins injecting petrol. It does not somehow refill, mix or convert petrol inside the CNG tank.

Automatic fallback is common in the documented factory and system examples, but it is not a universal rule for every CNG vehicle or conversion. The changeover can be automatic, driver-selected, or dependent on operating conditions such as coolant temperature and engine speed.

Maruti Suzuki’s Fronx CNG supplementary manual states: “If CNG is finished while the engine is running, vehicle will automatically changeover from CNG mode to Petrol mode & CNG malfunction warning lamp will start blinking.” That instruction applies to the described Fronx system, not automatically to every CNG model.

Prins gives a similar description for its VSI CNG system: when the CNG tank is empty, the system automatically returns to petrol. Its fuel-status LED flashes and the buzzer sounds three times during the changeover.
Some cars let the driver choose the fuel
Volvo’s V70 bi-fuel instructions describe a switch that lets the driver select gas or petrol. The vehicle starts on petrol and changes to gas after starting; a cold start can delay the change to CNG. A car with this arrangement may not behave like an automatically managed system when the gas tank is depleted, so use the vehicle’s switch and instructions rather than assuming a fallback sequence.
Aftermarket conversions need separate confirmation
A conversion kit’s controller, injectors, calibration, tank-pressure sensors and warning strategy determine what happens at low or zero CNG pressure. Two cars with the same engine can therefore respond differently if they use different kits or installers. Do not apply the Fronx, Hyundai, Volvo or Prins behavior to an aftermarket installation unless its documentation says it does so.

How startup and changeover normally work
Petrol startup can be part of normal CNG operation
Hyundai’s 2026 Exter CNG manual says the vehicle starts in petrol mode and changes to CNG automatically once the activation conditions are met. The manual says the changeover can take up to 60 seconds and is affected by engine speed and coolant temperature. This is why a driver may see petrol operation immediately after starting even when the CNG tank is full.
Volvo’s V70 guidance also describes starting on petrol before changing to gas, with a longer delay during a cold start. These examples show that “starts on CNG” and “switches to petrol when empty” are separate questions: a car can use petrol for every start and still run on CNG once warm.
Keep petrol in the tank unless your manual explicitly says otherwise
Do not deliberately run the petrol tank dry just because the car is capable of CNG operation. Hyundai advises keeping sufficient petrol for smooth starting, and the Volvo vehicle described starts on petrol. An empty petrol tank can leave the car unable to start, prevent a normal transition after a CNG depletion event, or trigger fuel-system faults. The exact minimum reserve is model-specific, so follow the manual rather than a generic distance estimate.

Indicator colors, symbols, flashing patterns and sounds are not standardized across manufacturers. Treat the owner’s manual as the definitive interpretation of a warning.
What to do if CNG runs out while you are driving
- Keep control of the car. Hold a steady line and avoid abrupt braking or steering. In a system that supports fallback, the engine should continue on petrol after a brief transition.
- Check the instrument panel. Look for the petrol mode indicator, the CNG gauge, a blinking CNG warning lamp, a flashing fuel-status LED or an audible alert. Do not stare at the display while moving; pull over if you need to read a detailed message.
- Confirm that petrol is available. If the petrol gauge is near empty, treat the situation as a fuel shortage rather than assuming the CNG system will keep the engine running.
- Use the fuel selector only as your manual specifies. In a driver-selected system such as the described V70 arrangement, select petrol when safe. Do not repeatedly toggle the switch while accelerating or while the car is in a hazardous location.
- Drive to a petrol station or safe stopping place. Keep the journey short if a warning lamp remains on, the engine hesitates, or the changeover feels abnormal.
- Record the symptoms. Note whether the engine changed fuel, which lamps flashed, how many audible alerts occurred, and whether the tank gauge changed. This information helps the installer diagnose a pressure sensor, solenoid, calibration or fuel-supply problem.
When the expected changeover does not happen
The engine loses power or stalls
Move to a safe location using normal breakdown precautions. If the car will not restart on petrol, do not keep cranking it until the battery is discharged. Check whether the petrol tank actually contains fuel, then contact the manufacturer’s roadside service or a qualified CNG technician. A stalled vehicle may have a low-pressure petrol problem, a CNG control fault, an electrical issue or an empty petrol tank; the dashboard symptom alone cannot identify the cause.
A warning lamp stays on
A warning that appears during automatic fallback can be part of the system’s documented alert, but a lamp that remains on, returns repeatedly or is accompanied by poor running needs inspection. Volvo states that a warning lamp or repeated acoustic signal indicates the vehicle needs servicing. Do not clear the warning by disconnecting the battery before a technician has read the fault codes.

You hear repeated beeps or see a flashing status light
Prins describes three buzzer sounds and a flashing fuel-status LED when its VSI system returns to petrol because the CNG tank is empty. Other systems may use a different pattern. Count the sounds and compare them with the manual; an unfamiliar pattern should be treated as a service alert rather than ignored.
You smell gas
If you smell CNG inside or around the vehicle, switch to petrol if you can do so safely, pull over away from ignition sources and arrange an inspection. Prins specifically advises switching to petrol and having the system checked if gas is smelled in or around the vehicle. Do not smoke, use a flame, or attempt to tighten high-pressure fittings yourself. If the smell is strong or you suspect a leak, leave the vehicle and contact emergency services according to local procedures.

Can a CNG car run if the petrol tank is empty?
Do not count on it. The documented Hyundai and Volvo instructions both involve petrol at startup, and Hyundai tells owners to keep sufficient petrol for smooth starting. Even a car that can operate on CNG for most of a trip may need petrol to start, warm up, complete a controlled changeover or recover from a CNG interruption.

Some specialized systems or vehicles may have different strategies, but that possibility is not a substitute for the manual. If the petrol gauge is empty, refuel before relying on the CNG tank. Running the petrol system dry can also expose the pump and fuel circuit to unnecessary stress and can leave you stranded when the CNG supply is exhausted.
Factory-fitted CNG versus an aftermarket conversion
Factory-fitted vehicles are calibrated as a complete package: tank-pressure sensing, fuel injectors, engine software, dashboard messages and safety shutoffs are designed together. Their manuals can therefore state a specific behavior, such as the Fronx’s automatic changeover to petrol.
An aftermarket system adds hardware and software to an existing petrol vehicle. The installer may configure automatic fallback, a manual switch, a minimum petrol reserve or a different warning sequence. The kit’s own manual and installation record should identify the behavior. If those documents are missing, ask the installer to demonstrate changeover with adequate fuel and explain every lamp and beep before taking a long trip.

- Keep both fuel systems supplied; do not treat the petrol gauge as optional.
- Have CNG filters, pressure regulators, injectors, valves and leak checks serviced at the intervals specified for your vehicle or kit.
- Use the manufacturer’s diagnostic procedure when a warning lamp or repeated beep appears.
- For a Prins VSI installation, use an official Prins installer for maintenance and system checks.
- After any repair, verify that the car starts on the expected fuel, changes over under normal temperature conditions and returns to petrol when CNG is unavailable.
- Never modify high-pressure CNG plumbing or bypass a tank valve, pressure sensor or safety shutoff.
Before a long trip: a practical checklist
- Read the fuel-system section for your exact model year and market.
- Confirm that the petrol tank contains enough fuel for startup and a detour to a station.
- Know whether your car changes fuel automatically or uses a selector.
- Identify the normal CNG-empty warning: lamp, display, LED or buzzer.
- Check that no CNG or engine warning remains illuminated before departure.
- Know the nearest authorized CNG service provider and the manufacturer’s roadside-assistance number.
- If you smell gas, stop using the CNG system and arrange qualified inspection.
The practical answer is therefore conditional: a properly operating bi-fuel car often can use its petrol tank when CNG runs out, but only the vehicle’s own documentation establishes whether the switch is automatic, what startup conditions apply and what warnings are normal.
