New Atlas reported in January 2026 that the product was still a prototype, so its “90-second” setup and low-profile design are promising concepts—not independently verified performance claims or evidence that it is the lightest pickup camper available.
What the Camp Tonneau Tent is designed to do
Camp Tonneau Tents’ concept combines a tonneau-height cover with hard side panels, tent fabric and an integrated frame. When stowed, it is intended to sit at roughly tonneau-cover height and leave the pickup bed available for cargo. When opened, the bed becomes the sleeping and living area, with an extension over the tailgate to add room.
New Atlas reported that the design is intended for two people and a short, five-foot bed. Its account says the interior can accommodate chairs and that the setup avoids a ladder. Those are reported design features, not independently verified field-use results. The term “stealthiest” is best understood as a reference to the low-profile stowed concept; the available reporting does not establish a measured comparison against other pickup campers.
How setup is supposed to work
- Raise the cover: Lift it into a wedge shape, supported by struts.
- Extend the tent: Pull the tent fabric and integrated poles outward and upward over the tailgate.
- Position the sidewalls: Swing the hard sidewalls into tracks mounted on the bed rails. New Atlas reported that the prototype tracks have drainage holes intended to direct water outward.
Camp Tonneau Tents’ setup time was reported as about 90 seconds. That is a maker claim relayed by New Atlas, not an independently timed result. The same report said hardware and sealing were still being refined.

Prototype status, weight and reported price
As of New Atlas’s January 9, 2026 report, the Camp Tonneau Tent was still at the prototype stage and its materials and specifications were being finalized. The figures below are the plans and estimates described in that report, not confirmation of current specifications, availability or pricing.

Planned features at the time included an HVAC port, a longer door awning, optional crossbars on a load-bearing tonneau structure, refined setup hardware and improved sealing. New Atlas cautioned that plans and specifications could change before production. The report provided no independent aerodynamic testing and no independent confirmation of the claimed setup time.

How it compares with other pickup camping setups
The main appeal is integration: one product is meant to serve as both a cover and a shelter, avoiding a separate elevated rack-and-tent arrangement while leaving the bed available for cargo when folded. That does not make it the best fit for every truck or camping style. Compatibility, the usable sleeping area between the wheel wells, total system cost, access, seating room and how often the truck carries cargo all matter.

A separate truck-bed tent and standard tonneau may make more sense if you already own one of them, want to choose each component independently or camp only occasionally. A shell may suit someone who values an enclosed cargo area, while a rack and rooftop tent may better fit a truck whose bed needs to stay unobstructed. The integrated concept is most compelling for a buyer who values low-profile stowage and a bed that returns to cargo duty when the shelter is folded.

What to verify before considering a purchase
- Production and delivery: Confirm whether the product is in production and whether the January 2027 delivery plan reported in January 2026 remains applicable.
- Exact fitment: Check the supported truck make, model, bed length, bed-rail configuration and any required modifications. The report’s price estimate varied by truck and bed size, but does not establish a fit list.
- Final specifications: Ask for the production weight, dimensions, materials, load limits for any crossbars and final sealing details rather than relying on prototype targets or planned features.
- Real camping layout: Confirm sleeping dimensions, usable space around the wheel wells, ventilation, door and awning arrangements, and whether the interior suits your intended occupants and gear.
- Current total cost: Get the current price and account for any required truck-specific components. The reported pledge and retail estimate are historical figures from January 2026, not current quotes.
- Setup and weather performance: Treat the 90-second time and drainage design as reported claims until you can assess the production unit and its instructions under conditions relevant to your use.
