Mazda’s 12R combines a 200-PS development target with dedicated engine hardware, competition-informed development and a planned 200-car sales allocation. A related, more widely allocated MAZDA SPIRIT RACING ROADSTER shares the motorsport-inspired theme but has different specifications, equipment and availability.
1. It brings a 2.0-liter engine to Mazda’s soft-top special
The standard MAZDA SPIRIT RACING ROADSTER is a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive soft-top with a 2.0-liter SKYACTIV-G engine and six-speed manual transmission. Mazda lists its Japan-market price at ¥5,265,700, including specified special accessories. That combination makes the standard model a distinct proposition within the Japanese Roadster lineup, separate from the more exclusive 12R. Mazda’s announcement and its current grade and price page describe the model and its configuration.
2. The 12R targets 200 PS
Mazda’s October 2025 announcement gives the 12R a target output of 147 kW (200 PS) at 7,200 rpm and target torque of 215 N·m at 4,700 rpm. Mazda explicitly labels both figures as development targets as of September 2025; they are not independent production-car test results. The distinction matters: these numbers show what Mazda was aiming to achieve, not a verified road-test measurement. Mazda’s release also lists company-measured weights of 1,050 kg for the 12R and 1,070 kg for the standard Spirit Racing Roadster.
3. The engine changes go beyond a vague “tune”
Mazda identifies dedicated engine parts for the 12R: a camshaft, cylinder head, pistons and exhaust manifold. Naming the hardware gives a more concrete picture of the development than simply saying the engine has been tuned. The details were described by Mazda at Tokyo Auto Salon 2025; the available information does not establish independent performance testing of the production car. 4. Its development is tied to Super Taikyu competition
Mazda says experience and technology from Super Taikyu competition informed the 12R’s powertrain and vehicle development. That connection is compelling because it links the special to a real motorsports program, while still leaving an important distinction: the 12R is a road car developed with racing knowledge, not a race car with road equipment. Mazda’s account of that process appears in its October 2025 announcement and Tokyo Auto Salon remarks.
5. The standard Spirit Racing Roadster gets dedicated chassis parts
Mazda lists a front strut tower bar, dedicated dampers and dedicated springs for the standard Spirit Racing Roadster, saying these reinforce body rigidity and the running gear. Those are details for the standard model; they should not automatically be attributed to the 12R without confirmation of that car’s equipment. 6. The 12R is a scarce, hand-built special
Mazda announced 200 sales-allocation units for the 12R and described each car as handmade. The company also notes that it may produce additional vehicles for promotional purposes, so 200 is the stated sales allocation rather than an absolute ceiling on every 12R that might exist. The related standard Spirit Racing Roadster has a planned limited production of 2,200 units, a figure that includes dealer test-drive vehicles. Mazda says sales of that model end once planned quantities are reached. Mazda’s model announcement details both allocations.
7. The 12R gets a full bucket seat
The 12R’s cabin includes a full bucket seat with a dedicated shape and RECARO KAMUI material. The standard Spirit Racing Roadster instead uses a semi-bucket seat finished in Alcantara. This is a meaningful difference between the two models: the 12R’s seat is the more committed, enveloping option, while the standard car has its own distinct specification. These are manufacturer-described features, not a substitute for trying the seats in person. Mazda’s announcement lists the seat details.

8. The exterior and wheels have 12R-specific touches
Mazda describes dedicated aerodynamic parts and a distinctive rear spoiler for the 12R, along with a hand-painted crystal-finish engine cover and serial plate. The car also gets forged wheels developed with Rays. Together, these details give the special a set of visible and material-specific distinctions beyond its engine target. Mazda’s descriptions are in its October 2025 release and Tokyo Auto Salon speech.
9. You can drive it in Gran Turismo 7
Mazda says its engineers and designers supervised the in-game 12R’s performance, sound and design in Gran Turismo 7. The game is a way to encounter the car even if you cannot access the Japan-market special in person. Mazda lists an optional MAZDA SPIRIT RACING SPORTS PACKAGE intended for circuit use. Its named components include a Fujitsubo titanium muffler, Yokohama ADVAN NEOVA AD09 tire, Brembo brake set, OS Giken limited-slip differential and dedicated oil, a Recaro full bucket seat and side adapter, and a Sabelt four- or six-point harness. Mazda says parts can be purchased individually through dealers, with some dealer exceptions. Before choosing any item, confirm current availability, exact fitment for the car and compliance with local road and competition rules. Mazda’s model and parts information lists the package components.
