There is no source-supported universal winner. A carefully maintained example of either sedan can be a better purchase than a neglected example of the other. The sensible comparison is between specific model years and specific cars, using maintenance records, present condition, VIN-specific recall information and the features you actually want.
That qualification matters because “Town Car” covers three substantially different generations, while the cited valuation evidence for the Brougham concerns a 1991 car. Treating either nameplate as one uniform vehicle can lead you to overlook major differences in age, equipment and upkeep.

What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you
The available documentation supports a disciplined buying process, not a blanket verdict on comfort, performance, reliability or cost. No directly comparable current figures establish which sedan has the lower purchase price, better fuel economy, cheaper repairs, greater reliability or easier parts supply. Those outcomes depend heavily on the exact year, configuration, mileage, corrosion exposure, prior repairs and quality of maintenance.
Lincoln’s official history says the Town Car was produced from 1980 through 2011 and divides it into three generations. Lincoln also describes the 1998 model as receiving an extensive revision. Hagerty’s valuation report is specifically for a 1991 Cadillac Brougham and warns that many surviving examples had fallen behind on maintenance by their second or third owners. That warning is a reason to screen individual cars carefully, not proof that every Brougham is unreliable.

Lincoln says it no longer offers the Town Car and does not offer it as a certified pre-owned vehicle. Any seller presenting a current factory CPO program for a Town Car should therefore be asked to document exactly what warranty is being offered and by whom.
Town Car generations you must distinguish
Use the year range as the first filter in any comparison. A 1980s Town Car and a post-1998 car are not interchangeable reference points simply because they share a name.

The Hagerty material available for this comparison is a 1991 Cadillac Brougham Vehicle Valuation Report, dated August 11, 2025. It supplies historical and condition-screening context for that model year; it should not be read as a technical or market assessment of every Brougham built in every year.
Its practical warning is important for any buyer looking at an older Brougham: later owners may have deferred routine maintenance, so a car that looks complete and presentable can still require substantial catch-up work. How to compare two actual cars, step by step
1. Write down the exact identity of each car
- Record the VIN, model year, body style, odometer reading and seller’s asking price.
- For a Town Car, place the car in the 1981–1989, 1990–1997 or 1998–2011 grouping.
- For a Brougham, note the exact year; do not use the 1991 Hagerty report as if it covered another year.
- List advertised equipment and ask the seller to identify anything that is optional, replaced or nonfunctional.
This prevents a common error: comparing a particular Brougham with an imaginary “average Town Car” instead of comparing two documented vehicles.
2. Request records before arranging a long trip
- Ask for invoices, inspection reports, registration history and dates or mileage for major maintenance.
- Look for continuity: repeated service entries are more useful than a single recent receipt.
- Ask which work was performed by the current owner and which by earlier owners.
- Require the seller to identify known warning lights, leaks, electrical faults, accident repairs and periods when the car was stored.
Missing records do not automatically disqualify a car, but they increase uncertainty. Price and inspection decisions should reflect that uncertainty rather than assuming undocumented work was completed.
3. Inspect the car cold and in daylight
Arrange for the engine to be cold when you arrive; ask the seller not to start it beforehand. Check that the VIN on the vehicle agrees with the paperwork. Examine body panels, glass, lighting, seals, wheel areas and the underside for corrosion, damage or fresh cleaning that could conceal leaks. Inside, operate every switch and gauge, including climate controls, windows, locks, seat functions and warning-light checks at startup.
A cold start, idle observation and road test can reveal issues that a brief warm demonstration hides. A qualified independent technician should inspect the car on a lift and scan applicable control modules before money changes hands. The inspection is especially valuable when records are incomplete or the seller resists a cold start.
4. Obtain a written condition report
Ask the inspector to separate safety-critical findings, immediate reliability work and cosmetic recommendations. Have the shop document fluid leaks, brake and suspension condition, tire age, steering play, cooling-system condition, exhaust integrity, battery and charging performance, rust and evidence of collision repair. Request photographs and estimates for each material issue.
Do not convert a list of possible repairs into a predicted bill without local labor rates and parts quotations. The same symptom can have different causes, and age-related work varies by year and configuration.

5. Check recalls by VIN or plate
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s recall tool identifies unrepaired recalls for the specific vehicle when you enter its VIN or license plate. Use NHTSA’s Check for Recalls page for that vehicle-specific check. A year, make and model search supplies broader recalls, investigations, complaints and manufacturer communications, but it does not replace the VIN lookup.
- Obtain the full 17-character VIN from the car and title.
- Enter the VIN or plate in NHTSA’s recall search.
- Save the result and ask the seller for repair orders for every outstanding campaign.
- Contact an authorized service department if the result is unclear or the seller claims a campaign was completed without documentation.
A recall result is one safety input, not a complete mechanical history. It does not certify that a car is sound or that every non-recall defect has been repaired.
6. Compare total purchase exposure
For each car, make a worksheet with the asking price, inspection fee, transport or registration costs, immediate repairs, deferred maintenance identified by the inspector and a reserve for unknowns. Use actual written estimates where possible. Do not claim that one nameplate is cheaper merely because its asking price is lower; a neglected example can erase that difference quickly.

The available evidence does not answer that question with a current, comparable number. No source here establishes average annual repairs, parts pricing, labor hours, fuel costs or a failure rate for either sedan. The honest answer is that the cheaper car to maintain is usually the one with better records and fewer immediate defects, regardless of badge.
Compare maintenance risk using the same questions for both vehicles:
- How many years of service records are available?
- Are there receipts for recurring maintenance rather than only cosmetic work?
- Does the independent inspection identify active leaks, worn safety components or electrical faults?
- Has the car been stored for long periods or exposed to severe corrosion conditions?
- Can local shops obtain the required parts and diagnose that exact year and configuration?
Get estimates before negotiating. If a seller will not permit an independent inspection, treat that refusal as a transaction risk rather than filling the gap with assumptions about the model.

Reliability: condition outranks the badge
Hagerty’s warning about Broughams that fell behind on maintenance is a screening signal for surviving older cars. It does not establish that every Brougham is unreliable, nor does it prove that a Town Car will require less work. Town Cars also span decades, so age, storage and ownership history can differ substantially within the nameplate.

Look for evidence of consistent care: dated invoices, coherent mileage progression, preventive work and a seller who can explain each major repair. Be cautious when the car has a freshly detailed engine bay, no service paperwork, multiple unexplained warning lights or a story that relies on “it only needs a small fix.” Have the shop verify the claim.
Features and comfort: compare the cars, not the stereotypes
Neither source establishes a valid cross-generation ranking for ride comfort, interior quality, acceleration, handling, noise or equipment. Features can change with year, trim and replacement parts. Build a side-by-side list from the actual cars:

Lincoln’s statement that the Town Car is no longer offered and is not available as a certified pre-owned vehicle means buyers should distinguish factory history from current seller support. Ask any dealer to provide the warranty issuer, term, deductible, exclusions and claims procedure in writing.

Questions to ask the seller
- What is the VIN, and may I photograph it and the title?
- When was the last inspection, and may my technician inspect the car independently?
- Can you provide invoices for maintenance and repairs, not just a vehicle-history summary?
- Are any warning lights, leaks, electrical faults or nonworking features present?
- Has the car been stored outdoors, driven in salted regions or involved in a collision?
- Has every recall repair been completed, and can you show the repair order?
- What work was done during your ownership, and what did you inherit from earlier owners?
- What written warranty, if any, accompanies the sale, and who administers it?
Compare the answers with the inspection report. A contradiction is a reason to pause and verify, not an invitation to guess.
Common mistakes that produce a bad comparison
Comparing generations as though they were one Town Car
The 1981–1989, 1990–1997 and 1998–2011 groupings cover different eras. Select the year before discussing equipment or driving character.
Using a 1991 Brougham report to describe every Brougham
The Hagerty document is explicitly for a 1991 example. Apply its maintenance warning to your inspection process, not as a universal verdict on every model year.

General campaign information cannot tell you whether a particular car’s repair is outstanding. Run the VIN or plate lookup and retain the result.
Confusing asking price with ownership cost
An advertised price says nothing about deferred maintenance. Add inspection findings and written repair estimates before deciding which car is the better value.
Assuming a clean appearance means good upkeep
Cosmetic condition can coexist with neglected fluids, worn safety parts or electrical faults. Insist on records and an independent mechanical inspection.
A practical scoring method
After both cars have been inspected, score each category from 0 to 5 using the same evidence. A score is a decision aid, not a claim about the model as a whole.

Bottom line
Choose a specific Cadillac Brougham or Lincoln Town Car only after identifying its exact year, verifying its records, inspecting its condition and checking recalls by VIN. The Town Car’s three-generation history and the Brougham evidence centered on a 1991 example make broad nameplate comparisons unreliable. The better used luxury sedan is the individual car that has the clearest maintenance history, the fewest verified defects, confirmed recall status and features that suit your needs. If neither candidate meets those tests, keep looking; patience is safer than turning an uncertain bargain into an expensive project.
