A C3 restomod can keep the 1968–1982 Corvette’s unmistakable shape while changing nearly everything underneath it: engine, transmission, chassis, suspension, brakes, and cabin. Chevrolet’s documented 1969 Stingray is a well-specified example of a modernized car built around its original chassis; enthusiast-reported builds go further, from later-generation running gear to a widened autocross body.
What makes a C3 a restomod?
C3 is the Corvette generation covering model years 1968 through 1982. A restomod preserves the classic car’s identity and appearance while updating some combination of performance, handling, braking, comfort, and convenience. The term covers a wide range: one build may retain the original frame and use upgraded components, while another places the C3 body over a later-generation chassis and running gear.
The examples below illustrate that range rather than establish a ranking. Specifications for Chevrolet’s featured car come from Chevrolet’s report; the other builds are described in a 2022 Corvetteforum roundup and are not independently verified measurements.
Four C3 restomods, four different approaches
| Build | Engine and reported output | Transmission and chassis | Handling, brakes, body and cabin |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1969 Stingray featured by Chevrolet | Chevrolet Performance LS376/480 crate engine; Chevrolet reports capability of 495 hp and 473 lb-ft | TREMEC five-speed; original chassis powder-coated | Van Steel performance suspension, Wilwood disc brakes, Forgeline wheels with Diamondback redline tires; custom red leather cabin and modern convenience equipment |
| 1976 Protourergarage build, as described by Corvetteforum | LS1; reported 380 hp | Six-speed manual transaxle; custom frame with C5/C6 hardware | Modern suspension; cabin and body details not stated in the roundup |
| 1976 Hardcore Engine Builders build, as described by Corvetteforum | LS3; output not stated in the roundup | 6L80 automatic with paddle shifters; C3 body on C6 chassis and running gear | C6 steering components, anti-lock brakes and traction control; body and cabin details not stated in the roundup |
| 1972 autocross build, as described by Corvetteforum | LS3; reported 590 hp | Transmission and chassis details not stated in the roundup | Autocross-specific suspension; body widened by six inches to fit reported 315 front and 355 rear tires; cabin and brake details not stated in the roundup |
Chevrolet’s 1969 Stingray: a modernized original-frame build
Chevrolet’s June 5, 2024 feature follows a car owned by Don Milligan, co-owner of Raleigh Speed Shop. It began as a base-model Stingray with a 350-cubic-inch small-block before being stripped for a complete restoration. Rather than replace the frame with a later-generation platform, the build keeps its original chassis, powder-coated as part of the work.

LS power with a five-speed
The engine is a Chevrolet Performance LS376/480 crate motor, based on the LS3 and fitted with an LS Hot cam, according to Chevrolet. The article gives its capability as 495 horsepower and 473 lb-ft of torque. It is paired with a TREMEC five-speed and custom exhaust. Those are reported specifications, not independent test results.
Milligan explained his direction simply: “Our shop does a lot of restomods, so I decided I want to do that,” and “I wanted to do it with an LS of course.” Chevrolet also quotes him calling the engine, “It’s a beast.”

Keeping the C3 shape while upgrading the experience
The build combines Van Steel performance suspension with Wilwood disc brakes, custom Forgeline wheels, and Diamondback redline tires. Its Blade Silver paint is a C8 Corvette color, an updated finish on the familiar C3 body rather than a change to the car’s basic silhouette.
Modernization extends into the cabin and everyday controls: custom red leather upholstery, Dakota Digital gauges, Vintage Air climate equipment, a RetroSound Bluetooth radio, power windows and locks, push-button start, and a security system. Electric headlight buckets and a powered wiper door update two distinctive C3 mechanisms. Chevrolet quotes senior technician Greg Folino describing the result: “It’s got all the bells and the whistles. All the modern technology.”

When the C3 body is only the starting point
The Corvetteforum roundup’s other examples show how dramatically the recipe can change. Its Protourergarage 1976 pairs a reported 380-hp LS1 with a six-speed manual transaxle and a custom frame incorporating C5/C6 hardware. That combination points to a build focused on a manual driving experience with later-generation components, rather than simply adding a newer engine to an otherwise stock platform.
The roundup describes Hardcore Engine Builders’ 1976 as a C3 body on C6 chassis and running gear. Its LS3 is paired with a 6L80 automatic and paddle shifters; C6 steering components, anti-lock brakes, and traction control bring more of the donor-generation package into the conversion. The engine’s output is not stated in the roundup.
Rank #4
- 1/43 scale car
- Metal
- Detailed and faithful reproduction of the original vehicle
- Car screwed to base and presented in a display box
At the more competition-oriented end, the roundup describes a 1972 C3 with a reported 590-hp LS3, autocross-specific suspension, and bodywork widened by six inches to accommodate reported 315 front and 355 rear tires. Here the wider arches are functional packaging for substantially broader rubber, not just a styling flourish. The roundup does not state the transmission or chassis details.
Why a successful build is more than an engine swap
Power is only one part of the decision. A useful way to understand these cars is to look at how each system supports the others:

- Powertrain and transmission: Engine family and output set expectations, but the gearbox shapes how the power is delivered. The examples span a five-speed, a six-speed manual transaxle, and a paddle-shifted automatic.
- Frame and running gear: Retaining and improving the original chassis preserves a different character and scope of work than substituting a custom frame or a C6-based platform.
- Steering, suspension, and brakes: More power is most useful when the car can turn and stop predictably. The documented builds pair engine upgrades with performance suspension, later-generation steering, or upgraded disc brakes.
- Wheels, tires, and bodywork: Tire choice affects fitment and can drive body changes. The autocross car’s reported widening accommodates its larger tires; the Chevrolet-featured Stingray instead uses custom wheels and redline tires with its original-frame approach.
- Cabin and controls: Digital gauges, climate control, modern audio, powered windows, and updated lighting mechanisms can make a classic car more usable without changing its defining outline.
What a C3-specific aftermarket chassis costs—and what it does not include
Specialist suppliers offer replacement chassis for 1968–1982 Corvettes, but their listed figures are component starting prices, not estimates for a complete restomod. Prices are volatile and should be confirmed with the supplier for the intended configuration.
| Supplier and product | Published starting price | Relevant details |
|---|---|---|
| Roadster Shop, C3 Fast Track chassis | $22,695, listed on the supplier page accessed in 2026 | Described as C3-specific, with selectable mounts for small-block, big-block, or optional LS motors and configuration choices. The supplier notes that images are representative and the final product may vary with engineering changes. |
| Scott’s Hotrods, 1968–1982 chassis | $14,750 for Coilover; $15,650 for SuperSlam, listed on the supplier page accessed in 2026 | Built to order; floor modifications are required, and installation by a qualified professional mechanic or fabricator is required. |
These listings describe chassis products, not finished cars or total project budgets. Before choosing one, confirm fitment, configuration, installation requirements, and current pricing directly with the supplier.
Choosing a direction for your own C3
Start with the driving experience and scope of change you want, rather than a headline horsepower figure. A build retaining the original chassis, like Chevrolet’s featured 1969, takes a different path from a custom-frame conversion or a C6-based chassis swap. Likewise, a road-oriented cabin with climate control and convenience features has different priorities from an autocross car built around suspension and tire fitment.
- Decide whether preserving the original frame is important, or whether a replacement/custom chassis is part of the goal.
- Match the engine and transmission to the intended use and driving character.
- Plan suspension, steering, brakes, wheels, and tire clearance as a coordinated package.
- Set expectations for body modifications and interior modernization before parts selection.
- For year-specific restoration references, Corvette-C3.com covers 1968–1982 VINs, RPO codes, engines, axles, transmissions, parts references, restoration how-tos, and manuals. Verify that any manual edition you consider covers the exact model year and drivetrain.
For a C3-specific chassis project, the relevant supplier pages are Roadster Shop’s 1968–1982 Corvette Fast Track chassis and Scott’s Hotrods’ 1968–1982 Corvette chassis. Chevrolet’s feature on the 1969 Stingray restomod, the Corvetteforum roundup of C3 restomods, and the Corvette-C3.com reference site provide further details on the examples and model-year resources.
