BYD announced a $1 billion factory in Manisa, Türkiye, in July 2024, with planned annual capacity of 150,000 electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. But the project’s original goal of starting production by the end of 2026 is no longer a confirmed schedule: Türkiye’s industry ministry said in June 2026 that progress had lagged and the company’s access to incentives had been suspended, while a report relaying Reuters said construction had not started and BYD had no production timeline. No authoritative update later than June 2026 is established here, so the project’s exact status on October 8, 2026, remains unresolved.
What BYD announced for Türkiye
On July 9, 2024, Invest in Türkiye reported that the Ministry of Industry and Technology had signed a $1 billion investment agreement with BYD. The announcement described a facility for electric and plug-in hybrid cars, with annual capacity of 150,000 vehicles, plus a sustainable mobility and research and development center. It set a target of up to 5,000 direct jobs and production by the end of 2026. These figures describe the announced plan, not completed construction, confirmed jobs or actual output. Invest in Türkiye’s announcement.
At the signing, Türkiye’s Industry and Technology Minister Mehmet Fatih Kacır called BYD’s decision “a testament to our robust industrial policies and commitment to fostering a business-friendly environment.” BYD CEO Wang Chuanfu cited Türkiye’s technology ecosystem, supplier base, location and workforce as advantages he believed would improve local production capability and logistics efficiency. Those were the speakers’ views at the announcement; they do not establish why the project later fell behind schedule.
Where is the planned factory?
The project is associated with Manisa in western Türkiye, with the planned location identified as Manisa Organized Industrial Zone (Manisa OSB). Anadolu Agency reported that land-allocation procedures had been carried out after BYD made the required payment. That supports the conclusion that site procedures took place; it does not show that factory construction began. Anadolu Agency’s report on land allocation; Anadolu Agency’s Turkish-language report.

What changed after the announcement?
In information published June 10, 2026, Anadolu Agency reported that ministry officials said planned progress had not been achieved for some time. BYD’s access to incentives was suspended at the beginning of 2026. The ministry also said the agreement and its conditions remained valid, and that BYD’s obligations and guarantees submitted to the state continued to apply. Anadolu Agency’s June 2026 ministry-status report.
The ministry’s account did not say the agreement had been cancelled or that incentives had already been recovered. Officials said companies may have to repay incentives if an investment is not completed, subject to applicable legal rules, commitments and guarantees. That is a conditional possibility, not a reported clawback in BYD’s case.

Has construction started, and will the factory open in 2026?
A June 11, 2026, Hürriyet Daily News report relaying Reuters coverage of an interview with BYD executive vice president Stella Li said construction had not started and the company had no timeline for starting production in Türkiye. This is a secondary report of a Reuters interview, rather than a directly reviewed BYD statement. Hürriyet Daily News report.
Accordingly, the end-of-2026 start date should be treated as the original 2024 target, not as a currently confirmed opening date. The latest detailed status reporting established here is from June 2026. It does not resolve whether construction or the schedule changed between then and October 8, 2026.
