The BMW M5 and Dodge Challenger SRT Demon 170 are built for different jobs. The M5 is a 717-bhp, all-wheel-drive plug-in-hybrid sedan designed to combine high performance with everyday utility; the Demon 170 is a limited-run, drag-focused muscle car whose headline output depends on ethanol content. Dodge’s published 0–60-mph claim is quicker than BMW’s preliminary figure, but those numbers come from separate manufacturer sources—not a controlled head-to-head test.

BMW specifications and current starting price are from BMW USA’s M5 technical data and BMW USA’s plug-in-hybrid page. Demon 170 figures and its historical price are from Dodge’s 2023 announcement. The power ratings use different units as published by each manufacturer, and the cars’ acceleration figures are not directly comparable test results.
Which is faster: the M5 or Demon 170?
On the published 0–60-mph figures, the Demon 170 has the lower number: Dodge claimed 1.66 seconds, while BMW lists 3.4 seconds for the M5 and labels that result preliminary. These figures were not produced in a matched test, so they do not establish how the two cars would compare under identical conditions or with the same measurement procedure.
The Demon’s number also belongs to a specialized drag setup and fuel-dependent power rating. Dodge says its maximum 1,025-hp and 945-lb-ft ratings require fuel containing more than 65% ethanol; on E10, Dodge lists 900 hp and 810 lb-ft instead. Its announcement also cites 2.004 g, but that is a Dodge performance claim, not an independent comparative measurement.

How their powertrains deliver performance
BMW M5: hybrid power and all-wheel drive
The M5 combines a plug-in-hybrid powertrain with all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic. Its 717 bhp and 738 lb-ft make it a very powerful sedan, while the hybrid system adds the ability to drive on electric power. BMW estimates 29 miles of electric range; actual range can vary with conditions and equipment.
Demon 170: fuel-dependent supercharged V8 output
The Demon 170’s supercharged V8 is calibrated for extraordinary output, but its peak rating depends on ethanol percentage. Dodge’s 1,025-hp figure applies to fuel with more than 65% ethanol, not ordinary E10 gasoline. The manufacturer’s separate E10 rating is 900 hp and 810 lb-ft, so fuel choice changes the published output materially.

Which one makes more sense for daily driving?
Choose the M5 for a performance sedan role
The M5’s four-door sedan body, all-wheel drive and plug-in capability make it the more versatile choice for someone who wants one high-performance car to cover routine driving as well as spirited use. BMW lists a 29-mile estimated electric range, which may allow some short trips to be completed using electric power when charged; the estimate is not a guarantee of real-world range.
BMW lists the sedan at 200.6 inches long, 77.6 inches wide excluding mirrors, 59.4 inches high, with a 118.3-inch wheelbase and 5,390-pound curb weight. Those dimensions help convey the M5’s substantial footprint, even though its four-door format is more conventional for everyday passenger use.

Choose the Demon 170 for drag-focused use
Dodge describes the Demon 170 as a street-legal production drag car and equips it with drag-oriented hardware, including staggered tires and suspension settings. Its setup prioritizes straight-line performance rather than the broad everyday role of a plug-in-hybrid sedan. Dodge also announced weight-saving deletions as part of the car’s drag focus.
Dodge announced a production cap of at most 3,300 cars: 3,000 for the U.S. and 300 for Canada. That was the announced limit, not a verified final production count. Its limited-run status and specialized configuration make it a very different ownership proposition from the M5.

Price and availability: why the figures are not a direct comparison
BMW USA currently lists the M5 Sedan with a starting MSRP of $123,300. Dodge’s $96,666 figure was the Demon 170’s 2023 launch MSRP, excluding destination and fees; Dodge said ordering was scheduled to close May 15, 2023. The dates and pricing contexts differ, so neither figure establishes a current transaction price comparison. Current Demon 170 used asking prices, sale values and inventory are not established here.
Verdict: a sedan versus a drag specialist
The M5 is the better fit for a buyer who wants a powerful, all-wheel-drive sedan with plug-in operation and broader everyday usability. The Demon 170 is the more specialized choice for someone drawn to drag racing and its fuel-dependent peak output. Dodge’s claimed 0–60 time is dramatically lower than BMW’s preliminary figure, but without a matched test, the fairest conclusion is that these cars target different kinds of performance—not that one is a proven real-world winner over the other.
