BYD announced its FANG CHENG BAO sub-brand in June 2023 and unveiled its first production model, BAO 5—also widely called Leopard 5—on August 16, 2023. The brand is positioned around personalized new-energy vehicles and off-road capability; the SUV is built on BYD’s DMO “Dual Mode Off-road” super-hybrid platform. Launch specifications and prices discussed below are historical China-market figures, not current global guidance.
What is BYD’s Fang Cheng Bao?
FANG CHENG BAO (方程豹), also written FANGCHENGBAO by BYD, is a BYD sub-brand announced on June 9, 2023. “Fang Leopard” is a loose English rendering of the Chinese characters; BYD’s launch announcement describes the name through the ideas of “formula” and “leopard.” The company framed the brand around personalized new-energy vehicles and off-road use.
At the August 16, 2023 brand and technology event, BYD introduced FANGCHENGBAO and its DMO platform, launched the first model, BAO 5, and showed the BAO 8 and BAO 3 concept vehicles. BAO 5 was due to appear at the Chengdu Motor Show on August 25, 2023. BYD Chairman and President Wang Chuanfu said the brand aspired to “redefine vehicular experience by offering an unparalleled blend of professionalism and personalization to global users.” That is the company’s stated ambition, not an independent assessment of the vehicle.
Is BAO 5 the same vehicle as Leopard 5?
Yes. BYD’s August 2023 launch announcement calls the SUV BAO 5, while launch-period public coverage commonly uses Leopard 5. The vehicle was initially described as a hardcore SUV code-named SF before the Leopard 5 name appeared in public reporting in July 2023. Because naming can vary by market, check the local BYD listing or vehicle documents when searching for availability; the evidence here does not establish which name is used in each export market.

What is the DMO platform?
BYD expands DMO as “Dual Mode Off-road” and describes it as a super-hybrid off-road platform. The company says the architecture combines a hybrid non-load-bearing frame with a specialized off-road hybrid system, and integrates its Blade Battery with a high-strength steel frame using Cell to Chassis (CTC) technology. These are BYD’s descriptions of the platform; they do not, on their own, establish independently tested off-road capability.
What were the BAO 5’s China launch specifications?
A November 9, 2023 China-market launch report listed a 31.8 kWh LFP Blade battery, 505 kW system output, 760 Nm peak torque, and a 0–100 km/h time of 4.8 seconds. It also reported a combined range of 1,200 km under the CLTC test cycle. These are dated launch-period figures attributed to that report, and the range is a standardized-cycle claim rather than a real-world result. Specifications can differ by trim, model year, and market.

Since filing information and later launch reporting serve different purposes, use the market-specific model-year specification sheet for a particular vehicle rather than treating either report as a universal specification.

What has changed since the launch?
BYD’s 2025 interim report places the BAO series within a broader FANGCHENGBAO lineup that had added the family-oriented TAI series, beginning with TAI 3. The report says FANGCHENGBAO achieved 100,000 deliveries in 18 months. That is a company-reported figure and does not independently verify the BAO 5’s performance or establish its current availability.
