Neither car wins every category. The Tang has a clearly documented large battery, long WLTP range, broad phone integration and vehicle-to-load capability. The Model Y needs to be judged by its exact market and trim, especially for range, seating configuration and infotainment equipment.

Which one suits a family better?
The seating pattern should decide this comparison before screen size or laboratory range. BYD presents the European Tang as a seven-seat, three-row SUV. Tesla sells the Model Y in five-seat and optional seven-seat configurations, but the extra row is substantially smaller than the first two rows according to Tesla’s owner manual.
- Choose the Tang first if six or seven occupants are a normal requirement, if the third row will be used on long journeys, or if you want a full-size family SUV layout rather than occasional extra seats.
- Choose a five-seat Model Y configuration if the household normally carries up to five people and you prefer to retain the maximum cargo volume of that layout.
- Consider the seven-seat Model Y carefully if the additional seats are mainly for children or short trips. Take the intended passengers and child seats to a physical test drive; the published dimensions do not make it an equivalent substitute for the Tang’s third row.
Range and infotainment can then break a tie. BYD publishes a single European Tang WLTP figure, while Tesla’s official regional pages emphasize that Model Y range changes with configuration and operating conditions rather than presenting one number that applies to every version.

Seating and third-row space
BYD Tang: a standard three-row layout
The Tang’s defining family advantage is that its seven-seat arrangement is the core vehicle configuration, not a small occasional-seat package. BYD’s 2024 European material describes the Tang as a spacious seven-seat, all-wheel-drive SUV aimed at family use. That makes it easier to plan around a household that sometimes needs all three rows: the buyer is not trading a normal five-seat vehicle for a highly constrained emergency row.
That does not automatically tell you how every child seat, booster or adult will fit. Seat-base angles, door openings, tether locations and the amount of luggage left behind the third row still need a physical check in the market-specific car. The important distinction is the design intent: the Tang is documented as a full seven-seat family SUV.
Model Y: five seats or a compact optional third row
The Model Y can be ordered with five seats or seven, depending on market and configuration. Tesla’s 2026 owner manual gives the following dimensions for the seven-seat version’s third row:

Those figures explain why Tesla describes the rear row as substantially tighter than the first two rows. They may work well for children, occasional passengers or short urban journeys, but they are not evidence that two average-size adults will be comfortable for a full day. Adult comfort depends on height, footwear, the second-row position and the journey length, so treat the measurements as a screening tool rather than a promise.
How to test the seats before ordering
- Bring the child seats, boosters and passengers who will actually use the car. A showroom demonstration with empty seats cannot reveal interference between a forward-facing seat, a second-row passenger and third-row access.
- Install the largest rear-facing seat in the row you expect to use most. Check that the front passenger still has a usable driving position and that the seat can be secured without twisting the belt or harness.
- Have the intended third-row occupants enter and exit repeatedly. Check whether they can reach the row without moving a child seat and whether the second row can be returned to its travel position reliably.
- With all seats occupied, load the everyday stroller, school bags and a weekly shop. The remaining luggage space matters more than a maximum-volume number if every row is normally in use.
Range and charging: what the official figures establish

The Tang’s 530 km number is a combined WLTP laboratory result, not a guaranteed distance on a motorway with a loaded family and winter weather. BYD’s figure is tied to the European vehicle specification and the 2024 publication. It is useful for comparing vehicles tested under the same cycle, but it should not be converted directly into a trip promise.

Tesla’s regional product pages make the same broader point about WLTP: the standard is useful for comparing electric vehicles, while actual range and charging vary. For the Model Y, the relevant version must be named before a numerical comparison is fair. A five-seat and seven-seat car, different wheels, software limits or a different regional battery can produce different official results.
Why your real-world distance will differ
Both cars will consume more energy when conditions demand it. Tesla specifically identifies state of charge, battery temperature, speed, weather, altitude and charger type as variables that affect range and charging. The same factors apply when you operate the Tang, even though its published WLTP value is clearly stated. A fully loaded car with roof equipment, cold temperatures and sustained high speed will not reproduce a calm-weather test-cycle result.

For a meaningful buying comparison, record the exact trim, wheel choice and market, then compare the same route in the same season. Separate motorway travel from mixed driving and leave a reserve for traffic, detours and a charger that is occupied or delivering less power than its headline rating.
Charging at home and on a journey
The Tang is specified for up to 11 kW AC charging and up to 170 kW DC charging. The AC figure is a vehicle capability, not a guarantee that a household installation can deliver it; the electrical supply, wallbox, cable and local regulations must all support the installation. On a trip, the DC headline is also a maximum under suitable battery and charger conditions, not a constant rate throughout a session.
The supplied Tesla material does not establish one charging specification that applies to every Model Y version. Ask the seller for the exact car’s AC and DC limits, then check the public chargers on routes you actually drive. A route with many high-power sites is less stressful than one where a family must depend on a single slow or unreliable stop, regardless of the badge on the bonnet.

What the Tang documents
BYD’s current European product information gives the Tang a 15.6-inch rotating centre display and a 12-speaker Dynaudio audio system. It also lists Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, integrated apps, voice control, 4G connectivity and over-the-air updates.

The Tang’s rotating panel is a tangible hardware difference. It can change orientation rather than leaving the driver with a fixed-format screen, and the documented phone mirroring means families can continue using familiar navigation, music and messaging interfaces. The integrated apps and 4G connection may be useful when a phone is not connected, while OTA support means software can be updated without a routine workshop visit. Availability of individual apps and functions can still vary by country.
How to assess the Tesla system fairly
Tesla’s interface is closely tied to the vehicle’s own software ecosystem, but the official material available for this comparison does not enumerate every infotainment function by Model Y trim and region. That makes a blanket statement that one system is universally better unreliable. Before ordering, sit in the exact car and test the tasks that matter to your household:
- Enter a multi-stop holiday route and see how easily the driver can adjust it without distraction.
- Pair each regular phone and verify audio, calls, contacts and navigation behavior.
- Check whether the services your family uses are built in, mirrored from a phone or unavailable in your country.
- Test voice commands with children talking and road noise present.
- Confirm which functions continue to work when mobile coverage is weak and how software updates are delivered.
On the evidence available, the Tang has the broader explicitly documented list of integrations. The Model Y may still be the better choice for a driver who prefers Tesla’s interface and account ecosystem, but that preference should be confirmed in the relevant market rather than inferred from a different region or trim.
Cargo space: compare the labels, not just the largest number

These figures are not automatically like-for-like. BYD reports a 235–1,655 L range and separately identifies 940 L in its five-seat configuration. Tesla’s manual distinguishes space behind a particular row from maximum total cargo, and it reports different totals for the five-seat and seven-seat Premium versions. Measurement methods, trim equipment and the position of seats can affect the result.

What the numbers mean in daily use
When all seven Tang seats are occupied, the published figure shows that luggage space is limited to the area behind the third row. The same principle applies to the seven-seat Model Y: its behind-third-row figure is the relevant one for a full passenger load, not the much larger maximum total.
For a family of five, both vehicles offer substantially more room once the third row is absent or folded. The five-seat Model Y has the larger stated maximum total, while the Tang provides a separately stated five-seat volume. Do not use either maximum as a proxy for the amount available with a stroller, cooler and several bags loaded above the seat backs.
Take the actual items to a dealer. Measure the folded stroller, check the lift-over height, and see whether a weekly shop can be arranged without blocking the driver’s rear view or requiring seats to be moved. A useful family vehicle is the one that accommodates your routine configuration, not the one with the biggest brochure maximum.

Child-seat access and everyday loading
Published seating and cargo data cannot confirm every child-seat arrangement. Check anchorage locations, belt length, door clearance and the path to the third row on the exact regional vehicle. If a rear-facing seat occupies the second row, confirm that another passenger can still reach the back without removing it. If older children use the third row, check that they can buckle themselves and that a parent can reach the buckle when parked in a narrow space.
Also test the common transitions: school run with two rows in use, weekend trip with every seat occupied, and a holiday load with one row folded. Ask whether the seat-release controls can be operated while carrying a child or luggage, and whether the folded seat leaves a level enough floor for your equipment. These are ownership details that a capacity headline cannot settle.

Vehicle-to-load power in the Tang
The Tang’s vehicle-to-load system can supply up to 4 kW to external equipment. That can be useful for camping appliances, work equipment or emergency power for selected devices, provided the correct connector, load limits and local safety instructions are followed. It is a distinctive practical feature, but it does not replace a properly installed home backup system and should not be treated as an unlimited household supply.
Connectivity and updates
The Tang’s documented 4G connection and OTA updates can reduce the need for scheduled software visits and support connected services while travelling. Confirm which services remain active after any trial period and whether coverage is available on your routes. Tesla’s exact software and connectivity package should likewise be checked in the local order specification, because market and trim differences matter.

Checks to complete before placing an order
- Name the exact vehicle. Record the Tang model year and market, and whether the Model Y is five or seven seats. Do not compare a generic Model Y label with a single Tang specification.
- Request the official range for that version. Keep the WLTP label attached to every figure and ask whether wheel or software choices alter it.
- Plan a representative route. Include motorway speed, winter conditions if relevant, passenger load and a charging stop. Confirm the connector and power available at each stop.
- Verify home charging. Have an installer confirm that the property, wallbox, protection equipment and local electrical rules support the desired AC rate.
- Load your family, not an empty showroom. Fit child seats, passengers, stroller and luggage in the configuration you use most often.
- Test the infotainment tasks. Pair phones, run navigation, use voice control and check the apps and updates available in your country.
- Read the market-specific documentation. Tesla’s 2026 owner manual figures cited here apply to the specified Premium configurations; equipment, software and availability can change by region and model year.
Verdict
The BYD Tang EV is the stronger family choice when the third row will be genuinely used. It combines a documented seven-seat layout with a large WLTP-rated battery, high stated charging capability, broad phone integration and vehicle-to-load power. Its main trade-off is that the published maximum cargo figure is not directly interchangeable with Tesla’s measurement system, so load testing remains important.
