Because BYD’s amount is rounded, the comparison supports the reported revenue milestone but not a finely calculated gap between the companies. The currencies also differ: BYD’s figure is reported first in renminbi, while Tesla reports in U.S. dollars. The dollar equivalent for BYD is the outlet’s approximation, and exchange-rate conventions can affect a conversion.
What does “revenue” mean in this comparison?
This is a comparison of total company revenue for one quarter—not vehicle-only revenue, vehicle deliveries, profit, market capitalization, or battery-electric vehicle sales. Tesla’s US$25.182 billion total included US$20.016 billion from automotive, US$2.376 billion from energy generation and storage, and US$2.790 billion from services and other, according to its Q3 financial summary. BYD has a broader manufacturing footprint that includes automobiles and related products as well as other business lines.
BYD’s vehicle lineup includes hybrids as well as battery-electric vehicles, but the reported headline figure is company revenue, not revenue from either vehicle category alone. It therefore cannot establish which company sold more vehicles or more battery-electric vehicles.

Why did BYD move ahead?
The revenue lead reflects the total reported revenue of two companies with different business mixes, not a like-for-like measure of car sales. Tesla’s Q3 filing said automotive sales revenue rose 1% year over year; it noted that delivery increases were partly offset by lower average selling prices. Tesla also reported 52% year-over-year growth in energy generation and storage revenue, attributing the increase primarily to Megapack and Powerwall deployments. Those are Tesla’s reported figures and explanation, not an independent assessment of the causes of the companies’ relative results.
Did BYD make more profit or sell more cars?
The revenue comparison alone answers neither question. Revenue is money recognized from a company’s business, while profit accounts for costs and expenses; vehicle sales or deliveries count units under each company’s reporting definitions. Tesla’s Q3 financial summary reports gross profit and net income separately from revenue. A revenue lead does not, by itself, show higher profit, stronger margins, or greater vehicle-unit sales.

Was BYD ahead for all of 2024?
Later annual reporting also put BYD ahead in full-year 2024 revenue: the Associated Press reported RMB 777.1 billion (about US$107 billion) for BYD and nearly US$97.7 billion for Tesla in 2025. That is a separate annual comparison; it should not be confused with the Q3 2024 milestone, which was the first reported quarterly revenue overtaking.
