The BYD SHARK made its global debut in Mexico City on May 14, 2024. Despite descriptions of it as an electric pickup, the launch model is a plug-in hybrid (PHEV), not a fully battery-electric truck. BYD calls it the company’s first pickup and says it is built on its DMO Super Hybrid Off-road Platform.
When did the BYD Shark launch in Mexico?
BYD officially launched the SHARK in Mexico City on May 14, 2024, describing it as a pickup developed for the global market. The launch event had more than 800 guests, according to BYD; that attendance figure is the company’s report, not an independently audited count. BYD’s launch announcement identified the SHARK as its first pickup truck.
Is the BYD Shark electric or hybrid?
The Mexico launch model is a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. It combines an electric-drive capability with a system that also uses fuel; it is not a battery-electric pickup that runs only on electricity. BYD describes the vehicle as using its DMO Super Hybrid Off-road Platform. The platform’s utility and off-road positioning are the manufacturer’s descriptions, not independent test findings. BYD’s launch release sets out that positioning.

Figures vary by market and test cycle, so Mexico’s NEDC numbers should not be treated as directly equivalent to the UK release’s WLTP figures.

Mexico specifications are from BYD México’s SHARK product page. UK figures are from BYD’s 2026 UK release. The release says the truck is planned to go on sale first in the UK and then in selected European markets in the second half of 2026; this is BYD’s announced plan, not confirmation of current availability.
NEDC and WLTP are different test cycles, so the Mexico and UK range figures should be read within their own market specifications rather than compared as like-for-like measurements. The listed figures are manufacturer-reported specifications, not independent road-test results.

Design and launch positioning
BYD named Wolfgang Egger, its Design Director, as responsible for the SHARK’s exterior design direction. Its 2024 release also lists a 3,260 mm wheelbase, a 10.25-inch instrument display and a 12.8-inch rotating central screen. BYD presented the model as combining pickup utility with off-road capability and comfort; those are launch claims rather than independent evaluations.
Stella Li, BYD Executive Vice President and CEO of BYD Americas, described the SHARK at launch as the company’s “inaugural new energy pickup” and said BYD aimed to challenge the conventional fuel-pickup landscape. That statement represents BYD’s corporate positioning, not evidence of market impact.
