Microchip Technology’s Detroit Automotive Technology Center is a 24,000-square-foot engineering and customer-support facility in Novi, Michigan—not a vehicle plant or public visitor attraction. The company announced completion of the center’s third expansion phase on October 18, 2023, adding laboratory capacity and new high-voltage and E-Mobility labs for automotive clients.
Where is Microchip’s Detroit Automotive Technology Center?
The center is in Novi, Michigan, in the Detroit-area automotive region. Microchip says it has maintained an application and sales office in the area since 1999. Its official facility and events page describes in-person technical learning at the Novi location.
Microchip presents the center as a place where automakers, suppliers and startups can work with technical experts to explore technologies and get application and design support. Its stated purpose is to help customers develop, test and refine applications during design.
What automotive engineering work does the center support?
Microchip’s announcement groups the expanded facilities around several engineering needs. The listed capabilities are demonstrations, development resources and laboratory characterization—not a claim that the center manufactures vehicles or commercializes every customer project onsite.

Cockpit controls and infotainment
Human-machine-interface work includes cockpit displays, touchscreens, Knob-on-Display solutions, buttons, sliders and wheels, with electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing. For infotainment and media hubs, Microchip lists USB and networking development resources using USB Type-C 3.2.
MEMS timing components
The center characterizes automotive MEMS resonators and oscillators. Microchip lists vacuum and wafer-scale probe and test, aging, frequency stability, phase noise and jitter among the work performed.
Automotive security
Security development uses CryptoAutomotive TrustAnchor integrated circuits (ICs). Microchip also lists onsite training in secure boot, message authentication and hardware authentication.
What changed in the third expansion phase?
Microchip reports that the expanded center totals 24,000 square feet and that laboratory space more than doubled after phase three. The company announced completion on October 18, 2023; these are company-reported figures, not independently measured facility data. Microchip also says the larger facility is expected to bring more technology-related jobs to the region, but did not provide a job-count estimate.

Microchip executive vice president Rich Simoncic said, “Microchip’s automotive business is a cornerstone of our company’s legacy.” He also said, “We remain focused on developing total system solutions, and this expansion provides our customers with immediate access to state-of-the-art resources,”. These are the company’s stated rationale and positioning for the expansion.
Matthias Kaestner, Microchip corporate vice president of automotive business, described the intended customer benefit: “Our vision for the center is to provide our automotive customers with the confidence to choose the right solutions for their designs by helping them to cut design effort and time to market by providing world class technical support locally.” Microchip has not published an independent measurement of reduced design effort or time to market attributable to the facility.
