PionEar is Jan Říha’s 2023 Hackaday Prize Assistive Tech project: a small in-car device designed to flash a light when it detects a siren, giving drivers who may not hear one clearly another way to notice an approaching emergency vehicle. Hackaday reports that it uses embedded machine learning to recognize sirens in live environmental audio, but publishes no model details or measured detection results.

How PionEar is intended to work

Hackaday describes PionEar as a device positioned within the driver’s view. Its purpose is deliberately narrow: detect a siren and provide a visual alert. As Hackaday writer Donald Papp put it, “It’s a small unit intended to perch within view of the driver in a vehicle, and it has one job: flash a light whenever a siren is detected.” Hackaday’s May 25, 2023 feature says the detection approach uses embedded machine learning on live environmental audio.

That description explains the concept, not its performance. The feature gives no machine-learning model, detection accuracy, operating range, false-alarm rate, or test results across siren types and driving conditions. It therefore does not establish how reliably PionEar would detect an emergency vehicle in real-world traffic.

What the build detail tells makers

The feature reports a specific enclosure technique: a channel in a 3D-printed case is filled with white resin intended for 3D printers, then UV-cured. The cured resin serves as a light guide and diffuser for the LED. This is a reported construction detail, not evidence that a finished product or a complete set of build files is available.

Who the project is for—and what has been established

PionEar was featured as Jan Říha’s entry in the Assistive Tech portion of the 2023 Hackaday Prize. Hackaday reports a positive response from Deaf and hard-of-hearing communities, but provides no participant count, study method, or measured safety outcome. That reported response is useful context about the need the idea addresses; it is not proof that the device improves road safety.

The official 2023 Hackaday Prize page describes the event as “A global hardware design challenge focused on widespread and impactful innovation.” It lists the Assistive Tech challenge dates as April 25–May 30, 2023. The page also lists a $50,000 first-place prize plus a Supplyframe DesignLab residency, and a $500 finalist award; sixth place additionally lists a Protolabs manufacturing grant. These are historical competition awards, not PionEar sales figures, funding, or evidence that the project won.
