Choose the Seagull family if your driving is mainly urban and the locally sold car provides enough certified range, space and equipment. Choose the BYD Dolphin if you need a longer-range configuration or a more versatile primary-car role. There is no universal winner: BYD sells the Seagull-derived car as the Seagull in China, Dolphin Mini in Latin America and Dolphin Surf in Europe, while Dolphin specifications also vary by country and model year.
The figures available for comparison are not a same-market, same-year test. They combine a Spain-market Dolphin Surf release from June 2025 with Japan-market Dolphin launch figures from September 2023. Use them to understand the cars’ positioning, then verify the exact local trim, price, battery, charging system, safety equipment and warranty before signing a purchase order.

Quick answer: which BYD is the better fit?
| Your priority | More natural starting point | Why | What to verify locally |
|---|---|---|---|
| Short urban trips, tight parking spaces and the smallest footprint | Seagull family | It is the smaller model and is intended to occupy a compact city-car role. | Entry-trim range, rear-seat room, boot space, standard safety kit and charging rate. |
| Longer journeys or one car for mixed city and intercity use | Dolphin | The available Japan launch range included a 58.56 kWh Long Range version rated at 476 km. | Current local battery option, test cycle, motorway suitability and real charging times. |
| Lowest purchase price in the available Spain example | Dolphin Surf Active | BYD Spain listed the Active below the Boost and Comfort trims in June 2025. | Current out-the-door price, incentives, taxes and dealer fees; the 2025 campaign prices are not 2026 prices. |
| Maximum certified range in the cited examples | Dolphin Long Range | The Japan launch announcement quoted 476 km for the 58.56 kWh version. | Whether that version is still sold in your country and which test cycle produced the figure. |
| A compact car with a relatively high seating position | Seagull family | The Spain-market Dolphin Surf is 1,590 mm high, but exact seating ergonomics depend on trim and market. | Driver sight lines, seat adjustment and headroom during a test drive. |
Think of the decision as a fit question rather than a technology contest. A smaller battery can be the sensible choice when your daily mileage is low and home or workplace charging is available. A larger battery is valuable when you regularly travel beyond the city, cannot charge at home, or want more flexibility between charging stops.

What “Seagull” and “Dolphin” mean in different countries
BYD identifies the Chinese-market Seagull as the same basic model sold under different names elsewhere: Dolphin Mini in Latin America and Dolphin Surf in Europe. “Seagull family” is therefore the safest name when discussing the vehicle across markets. Once you are looking at a real car, use the local sales name and exact trim shown on the order sheet.

A shared family name does not guarantee identical hardware. Regional versions can differ in dimensions, battery capacity, software, safety equipment, charging connector, charging power, suspension tuning and certified range. Even two cars carrying the same name may change between model years. A price or specification from Spain should not be applied to a Seagull in China, a Dolphin Mini in Latin America or another Dolphin Surf market without confirmation from the local distributor.

| Seagull family / Dolphin Surf | Europe, Spain release, June 2025 | Dolphin Surf Active, Boost and Comfort examples, including batteries, WLTP figures, dimensions, Spanish prices and Spanish warranty terms. |
| Dolphin | Japan launch, September 2023 | Launch versions rated at 44.9 kWh/400 km and 58.56 kWh/476 km; BYD Japan subsequently announced an equipment update. |
Size and everyday practicality
The available European specification identifies the Dolphin Surf as 3,990 mm long, 1,720 mm wide and 1,590 mm high. Those measurements explain why it is aimed at city use: length and width are easier to place in compact parking spaces than a larger hatchback, while the height can provide a more upright driving position. They do not, by themselves, tell you whether a particular car will fit your garage, because mirror width, turning circle and charging-cable clearance also matter.
The Spain release says the Dolphin Surf’s boot capacity is comparable with vehicles in a higher segment, but the cited passage does not provide a trustworthy numeric volume. Do not use an uncited boot number from a generic listing. Take the child stroller, luggage or work equipment you actually carry to a dealer and measure the opening, floor length and seat-folding arrangement.
The Dolphin is positioned as the larger car. That generally makes it the more plausible choice when rear passengers, luggage or longer journeys are regular requirements, but the available material does not provide a matched cargo-volume or interior-dimension test against the Seagull family. Compare usable space in person rather than assuming that a larger exterior automatically solves every loading problem.
Questions to answer during a test drive
- Can an adult sit behind your normal driving position without knees touching the front seat?
- Does a rear-facing child seat leave enough room for the front passenger?
- Can your largest suitcase pass through the boot opening, not merely fit inside on paper?
- Do the rear seats fold flat enough for your usual loads?
- Can you see the front corners and judge the car’s width in a narrow parking garage?
- Is the charging port positioned conveniently for the cable and socket you use?
Battery and range: the figures that are actually documented
The following table keeps each number tied to its market, trim and test cycle. Battery capacity is the nominal pack size reported by the manufacturer; it is not the same as usable energy. Range ratings from different countries or test cycles should not be ranked as if they were laboratory results from one test.

| Vehicle and trim | Market and source date | Battery | Certified range | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dolphin Surf Active | Spain/Europe, June 2025 | 30 kWh | Not stated in the cited release | Entry version; request the local official range before buying. |
| Dolphin Surf Boost | Spain/Europe, June 2025 | 43.2 kWh | 322 km combined WLTP; 502 km urban WLTP | Both figures are WLTP results for this European trim. Urban range is not a motorway prediction. |
| Dolphin, Japan launch version | Japan, September 2023 | 44.9 kWh | 400 km | Launch figure; the cited announcement does not establish a directly equivalent test-cycle comparison with the Spanish figures. |
| Dolphin Long Range | Japan, September 2023 | 58.56 kWh | 476 km | Launch figure; confirm present availability and equipment after BYD Japan’s later update. |
Why the range numbers do not settle the contest
The 322 km combined and 502 km urban values for the European Dolphin Surf Boost are both WLTP figures, but they describe different test conditions. Urban cycles use lower speeds and more regenerative braking, so the 502 km number should not be treated as an all-purpose driving range. Weather, heating or air-conditioning use, speed, passengers, hills and tyre pressure can materially reduce any certified figure.
The Japanese Dolphin figures are useful evidence that a larger battery option exists in that market, not proof that the same option is sold where you live. The announcements also come from different years and may use a different certification procedure. Ask the dealer for the official range label for the exact vehicle identification number or trim, and record whether it is WLTP, Japan’s WLTC or another standard.
Match the battery to your routine
- Mostly urban, predictable mileage: the Seagull-family entry trim can be rational if your daily distance is comfortably below its local certified range and you can recharge regularly.
- Mixed urban and regional driving: compare the Dolphin’s larger-battery trim with the Seagull-family Boost or equivalent. Focus on the range you retain after a cold-weather or motorway buffer, not the brochure maximum.
- Frequent long trips or unreliable access to charging: favor the longest-range version that is officially sold and supported in your area, even if its purchase price is higher.
Price: use the Spain figures as a dated reference, not a current global quote
BYD Spain’s June 2025 release listed these prices for the Dolphin Surf. They are Spanish list prices from that release, not confirmed 2026 prices and not transferable to other countries.
| Trim | Spain price listed in June 2025 | Battery stated in the release | Range stated in the release |
|---|---|---|---|
| Active | €19,990 | 30 kWh | Not stated in the cited passage |
| Boost | €23,990 | 43.2 kWh | 322 km combined WLTP; 502 km urban WLTP |
| Comfort | €26,490 | Not stated in the cited passage | Not stated in the cited passage |
BYD Spain also advertised discounted examples tied to brand campaigns and Spain’s Plan MOVES III, valid only through 30 June 2025. Those were conditional promotions, not recurring prices. For a purchase today, compare the dealer’s written on-the-road total: vehicle price, registration or delivery charges, taxes, charging equipment, finance cost and any incentive for which you personally qualify.
Warranty and support: what the Spanish terms cover
For the Spanish model information published in June 2025, BYD stated a six-year or 150,000 km general warranty, an eight-year or 200,000 km battery warranty to at least 70% capacity, and an eight-year or 150,000 km electric-motor warranty. These are Spain-specific terms. Warranty duration, mileage limits, battery-capacity thresholds, roadside assistance and required servicing can differ elsewhere.

Ask for the local warranty booklet rather than relying on a salesperson’s summary. Confirm whether the battery guarantee measures capacity at the whole-pack level, whether scheduled servicing is required to preserve coverage, which parts are excluded, and how a capacity test is requested. Also ask where high-voltage repairs are performed and how far you would need to travel for specialist service.

The Dolphin Surf flyer lists CCS2 and separates AC and DC charging details by market. The evidence does not establish one universal charging power for every Seagull-family vehicle, so do not assume that a cable, wallbox or public charger suitable for one regional version will deliver the same result on another.
Charging checks before purchase
- Read the exact trim’s specification sheet and identify the AC connector, DC connector and maximum input power.
- Check whether your home supply can support the proposed wallbox and whether installation requires an electrical upgrade.
- Confirm that the public chargers on your regular routes use a compatible connector and provide the power the car can accept.
- Ask how battery preconditioning works, whether it is automatic navigation-based or manually activated, and whether the feature is included on the trim you are buying.
- Obtain an estimated charge time for the battery size and charger you will actually use; a charger rated for more power cannot force the car to accept more than its onboard limit.
How each car fits common ownership patterns
City resident with a short daily commute
The Seagull family is the logical first look when most journeys are short, parking is difficult and a small footprint saves daily stress. The key question is not whether its maximum range sounds impressive, but whether the local entry trim covers your longest routine trip with a sensible reserve. If you can charge at home or work, a smaller battery may also reduce the amount of capacity you are carrying every day.
Apartment resident who relies on public charging
Public-charging dependence changes the calculation. You may value the Dolphin’s larger battery because it can reduce the frequency of charging stops, but the benefit depends on the car’s actual DC charging rate and the chargers near your home. A smaller Seagull-family car can still work if reliable chargers are close and your schedule tolerates more frequent sessions. Compare charging time and charger availability, not battery size alone.
Household with children and regular luggage
Start with the Dolphin because it is the larger model, then test the rear seat and boot with your own equipment. The available evidence does not provide a matched cargo measurement, and nominal exterior size cannot reveal whether a stroller, sports kit or weekly shopping fits comfortably. If the Seagull family meets the space test and your journeys are local, its smaller dimensions may still be preferable.

One-car household that travels between cities
The Dolphin’s longer-range configuration is the stronger candidate where intercity travel is routine. The Japan launch figure of 476 km for the 58.56 kWh Long Range version illustrates the type of configuration to seek, but first confirm that the version is sold locally, which certification cycle applies and what equipment changed after the Japanese update. If the only locally available Dolphin has a smaller battery, compare it honestly with the local Seagull-family trim rather than importing an overseas specification into the decision.
Buyer focused on the lowest upfront cost
Use the Spain prices only as historical context. A lower list price can be offset by required options, delivery charges, financing, insurance, home-charger installation or the loss of an incentive. Request two written quotations for equivalent equipment and compare the total payable amount, not a headline number copied from an old campaign.

Before choosing a winner, complete this sequence for the exact country and model year. It prevents a common mistake: comparing a base Seagull-family car sold today with a high-range Dolphin described in an older overseas announcement.
- Identify the vehicle precisely. Record the local name, model year, trim, battery size and any facelift or equipment-update designation.
- Compare certified range on the same test cycle. If one figure is WLTP and the other is WLTC or another standard, label that difference instead of treating the numbers as directly equivalent.
- Get the out-the-door price. Include taxes, registration, delivery, mandatory options, finance charges and incentives available to you on the quotation date.
- Measure practical space. Sit in every seat, fit your largest child seat or luggage, and test the folded rear seats.
- Check charging hardware. Confirm connector type, AC and DC limits, cable supplied, charging curves if published, and compatibility with your home and route chargers.
- Audit safety equipment. List the driver-assistance and crash-avoidance features fitted as standard on your trim; do not infer them from a higher trim or another country.
- Read the warranty. Note time and distance limits, battery-capacity coverage, exclusions, service requirements and the location of authorized high-voltage repair.
- Confirm support. Ask about parts availability, roadside assistance, software updates and the nearest service center.
- Drive both cars on your roads. Include a narrow street, a motorway or fast road if relevant, a parking maneuver and a route with the passengers you normally carry.
What is established—and what is not
The available official material establishes a clear size-and-use distinction: the Seagull-derived car is the smaller urban-oriented offering, while the Dolphin can be specified for a larger-car role and, in the cited Japanese launch, a longer-range version. It also establishes the Spain-market Dolphin Surf battery, range, dimensions, prices and warranty figures listed above.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
It does not establish a universal global price, a current worldwide trim walk, a same-market cargo comparison, independent safety scores, independent reliability results, energy-consumption tests, resale values or total ownership costs. Those omissions matter. A purchase decision should not assign a safety or reliability advantage to either model without country-specific evidence, nor should it assume that a Japanese launch specification remains unchanged after later equipment updates.

Manufacturer claims and how to weigh them
BYD Spain reported that one million Dolphin Surf vehicles had been produced within 27 months of launch. That is a manufacturer-reported production milestone; it is not a reliability, safety or value rating.
The same release said plug-in vehicles represented 9% of the European A and B segments. Because the cited statement does not provide the underlying dataset or methodology, treat it as BYD’s reported market observation rather than an independently verified market-share calculation.
BYD Spain also attributed this statement to Stella Li, BYD Executive Vice President: The DOLPHIN SURF has established references and records since its launch, topping the monthly sales charts in its category more than 20 times in just over two years.
This is a manufacturer statement about the Dolphin Surf and should not be read as an independent comparison with the Dolphin.
Advantages and compromises to weigh
Seagull family
- Potential advantages: smaller exterior footprint, natural fit for dense urban driving, and a lower entry point in the Spain example.
- Potential compromises: the smallest battery may be less comfortable for frequent long trips; local range, equipment, boot capacity and charging performance must be checked rather than assumed.
Dolphin
- Potential advantages: larger-car role and availability of a 58.56 kWh/476 km Long Range configuration in the cited Japan launch.
- Potential compromises: a larger or higher-range trim can cost more and may be unnecessary for a short urban commute; current local availability and post-update equipment need confirmation.
Bottom line
Buy the Seagull-family car when compact dimensions and urban efficiency match your routine, the local trim has enough certified range, and its rear seat, boot and charging hardware pass your practical tests. Choose the Dolphin when you need more cabin and luggage flexibility or a longer-range configuration for regular intercity travel. Make the final call only after comparing equivalent, locally sold versions on price, range cycle, battery, space, charging, safety equipment, warranty and service support.
