How far a BYD Seagull travels depends on the exact market version, speed and weather. BYD’s Ethiopia specification lists a 305 km CLTC Seagull with a 30.08 kWh battery and a 405 km CLTC version with a 38.88 kWh battery. Those are standardized comparison figures, not guaranteed trip distances. In a separate cold-weather evaluation, the 405 km CLTC version covered 394 km at 23°C but 243 km at −7°C. At motorway speeds, an EVKX estimate for the larger-battery car is 247 km at 90 km/h, 206 km at 112 km/h and 195 km at 120 km/h in ideal conditions. A 2 kW heating load reduced the 90 km/h estimate to 222 km and the 112 km/h estimate to 188 km.
Which BYD Seagull range figure applies to your car?
There is no single worldwide Seagull range number. Battery size, model year, software, test cycle and market equipment can change the rating. Check the specification sheet, registration documents or vehicle menu for your country rather than applying an overseas figure.

The Ethiopia figures and Morocco figures are not interchangeable. A 300 km Moroccan-rated car is not automatically the same configuration as a 305 km CLTC car, and neither rating should be compared with a road test as though all three used the same route and conditions.
What CLTC tells you—and what it does not
CLTC is a prescribed laboratory-style driving cycle used for comparison in markets that adopt it. It gives buyers a consistent number for vehicles tested under that protocol, but it does not predict every journey. Traffic, wind, road gradient, tire pressure, cabin temperature and driving speed can all move actual consumption away from the test result.

BYD’s own range guidance describes the limitation precisely: “Published electric range is a reference for a stated test protocol. A personal distance estimate needs available battery energy and consumption measured at the battery under compatible driving conditions.” It also says that “Speed, temperature and auxiliary use matter when choosing a relevant observation.” Those qualifications are why a CLTC number should be treated as an upper-context comparison, not as a promise that the dashboard will always show that distance.
Real-world motorway range from the larger-battery Seagull
EVKX published estimates for a Seagull with a battery of about 38 kWh. In perfect conditions, the estimated distance falls as steady speed rises:
| Steady speed | Estimated range without the additional heating load | Estimated range with 2 kW heating |
|---|---|---|
| 90 km/h | 247 km | 222 km |
| 112 km/h | 206 km | 188 km |
| 120 km/h | 195 km | Not stated |
These are EVKX estimates, published in 2026, rather than a universal guarantee or a replacement for a test of your particular car. They illustrate two important effects: aerodynamic demand rises quickly with speed, and cabin heating is a large load when the battery is small. The 120 km/h result is about 21% lower than the 90 km/h result in the same no-heating estimate (195 versus 247 km), even before hills, wind, traffic or a winter battery penalty are added.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat this means for a motorway trip
Plan from the speed you will actually hold, not the legal maximum printed on a sign. A 38.88 kWh Seagull that appears comfortable for a 200 km journey on a mild, slower route may need a charging stop when the same journey is driven at 112–120 km/h, in strong headwind or with the heater running. Leave a reserve for an unexpected diversion and for the possibility that a charger is occupied or out of service.

Cold-weather evidence: the largest documented swing
A China Automotive Evaluation test, reported by CarNewsChina in 2024, recorded 394 km at 23°C and 243 km at −7°C for the 405 km CLTC version. The difference was 151 km, or about 38% of the warmer result. The test is useful evidence of how severe cold can be, but it is one evaluation under its own route, speed profile, battery condition and test procedure. It should not be converted into a universal “winter percentage” for every Seagull.
The same report recorded AC charging at 6.98 kW at −7°C. That figure indicates that the car accepted power near its stated AC capability in that test; it does not mean every cold session will charge at exactly that rate. Battery temperature, state of charge and the charger installation still matter.
Why freezing temperatures reduce distance
- Heating energy: The cabin must be warmed, and the 2 kW EVKX scenario shows how that continuous load cuts motorway distance.
- Battery efficiency: Cold cells can deliver and recover energy less efficiently until they warm up.
- Air density and weather: Cold, dense air and winter wind increase aerodynamic resistance; wet or snowy roads add rolling resistance.
- Short trips: A large share of energy can go to warming the cabin and battery before many kilometres have been covered.

“Available battery energy” is the energy you can actually use between your chosen state-of-charge limits, not necessarily the battery’s nominal nameplate capacity. The Ethiopia specification lists 30.08 kWh and 38.88 kWh batteries, but it does not establish that every one of those kilowatt-hours is available to the driver.
Worked example using your own consumption
Suppose the car’s trip computer or a compatible meter shows 15 kWh/100 km under the conditions you expect, and you have 30 kWh available for the planned leg. The estimate is 30 ÷ 15 × 100 = 200 km. If consumption rises to 20 kWh/100 km because of speed, cold or heating, the same available energy yields 30 ÷ 20 × 100 = 150 km. These are arithmetic examples, not measured Seagull results.
Step-by-step trip planning
- Identify the exact car: Confirm the market, model year, battery version and the range protocol shown on its documentation.
- Set usable energy: Read the current state of charge and use the vehicle’s displayed energy information where available. Do not assume the full nominal battery is accessible.
- Choose comparable consumption: Use a recent battery-side or trip-computer figure recorded at a similar speed, temperature, terrain and HVAC setting.
- Calculate the distance: Divide available energy by consumption and multiply by 100.
- Subtract a reserve: Keep energy for hills, detours, congestion, charger queues and the final approach to a charger. The reserve should be larger for an unfamiliar winter or motorway route.
- Recheck en route: If consumption is running higher than planned, reduce speed, moderate heating or cooling where safe, and select a charger earlier rather than waiting for a very low state of charge.
How each driving condition changes Seagull range
Speed
Speed is usually the strongest controllable motorway factor. Air resistance increases sharply as speed rises, so moving from 90 to 112 or 120 km/h can cost more distance than the small increase in journey speed saves in charging time. The EVKX figures provide a concrete comparison for the larger-battery car.

Cold weather affects both driving efficiency and charging behavior. If the car supports scheduled climate control while connected, warming the cabin before departure can shift some energy use to the charger instead of the traction battery. The benefit depends on the car’s equipment and the outside temperature; do not assume a fixed gain.

Heating and air conditioning
Any sustained auxiliary load reduces the energy left for propulsion. Heating is especially noticeable in winter because the load operates continuously in a cold cabin. Air conditioning also consumes energy, although its effect depends on temperature, humidity, sunlight and the selected setting.
Traffic and route profile
Stop-and-go traffic can lower efficiency through repeated acceleration, while a smooth urban route may be gentler than a fast expressway. Long climbs spend energy that is only partly recovered on descents. Headwinds, rain and rough surfaces have similar route-specific effects.
Payload and tires
Passengers, luggage and roof-mounted equipment increase the work required to move the car. Under-inflated or unsuitable tires increase rolling resistance. Check pressures against the vehicle’s door-jamb or handbook specification, particularly before a long trip.
305 km versus 405 km: which use case fits?
| Use case | 305 km CLTC / 30.08 kWh | 405 km CLTC / 38.88 kWh |
|---|---|---|
| Short urban commuting with home charging | More likely to cover routine daily travel if charging is available; the smaller energy reserve leaves less flexibility for detours. | Greater buffer between charges and more tolerance for weather or an unexpectedly long day. |
| Frequent motorway travel | Requires more careful charger planning because high-speed consumption uses a larger share of the smaller battery. | Better suited to longer legs, although speed and temperature still determine the actual stop interval. |
| Cold-weather operation | Heating and battery losses represent a larger proportion of total stored energy. | More absolute energy is available, but the documented cold-weather test shows that the larger version can still lose substantial distance. |
| Charging access | Can be practical when a reliable home or workplace charger is available. | Offers longer intervals between charging sessions; DC capability is higher on the Ethiopia specification. |
A city driver in mild weather may approach the relevant published rating more closely than a driver making a high-speed winter journey. That is a general planning principle, not a promise of a particular percentage, because BYD does not endorse one universal motorway or winter correction.

Charging capability and what to verify before buying
The Ethiopia specification lists maximum AC charging of 6.6 kW for both versions. It lists maximum DC charging of 30 kW for the 305 km version and 40 kW for the 405 km version. The Morocco launch release states that 30–80% DC charging takes 30 minutes for its market versions, but that timing cannot be assumed for a differently equipped Seagull, a different charger or a different battery temperature.
Charging power normally tapers as the battery fills, so multiplying battery size by a charger’s maximum rating will not produce a reliable 0–100% time. For trip planning, use the vehicle’s charge display and the charger operator’s live status. If you are buying a cable for AC charging, verify the connector standard, phase requirements, current rating and local approval for your country; the Seagull specification alone does not establish that one cable listing fits every market.
A practical range checklist
- Confirm whether your number is CLTC, a regional rating or a road-test result.
- Record the battery version and market; do not mix 305/405 km Ethiopia figures with 230/300 km Morocco figures.
- Use consumption recorded at a similar speed and temperature.
- Account for heating or cooling, passengers, luggage, hills, wind and rain.
- Plan a reserve and identify an alternative charger before departure.
- In freezing weather, expect the possibility of a large reduction; the cited test fell from 394 km at 23°C to 243 km at −7°C.
- Check tire pressure and charging compatibility before a long trip.
Bottom line for real Seagull range
The 305 km and 405 km figures are CLTC ratings tied to specific Ethiopia-market battery versions, while other markets publish different numbers. For the larger-battery Seagull, available evidence points to roughly 195–247 km in ideal steady-speed motorway estimates at 120–90 km/h, with heating reducing those estimates further. A documented test also showed 243 km at −7°C versus 394 km at 23°C. The dependable way to plan is to use your car’s available energy and comparable consumption, then retain a practical reserve rather than applying a single percentage to the headline CLTC number.
