BYD says its YANGWANG U9 Xtreme reached 496.22 km/h (about 308.4 mph) at ATP Automotive Testing Papenburg in Germany on 14 September 2025, making it the world’s fastest production car. The claim is the automaker’s; the available announcements do not establish independent certification or the eligibility rules used for the production-car label. BYD says the customer production run will be capped at no more than 30 cars.
How fast is the BYD U9 Xtreme?
BYD reports a top speed of 496.22 km/h, equivalent to about 308.4 mph. The run took place on 14 September 2025 at ATP Automotive Testing Papenburg, a test facility in Germany. BYD identifies the driver as Marc Basseng and calls the result a global production-car top-speed record.
The figure and record status are manufacturer-reported. BYD’s announcement does not document an independent adjudicator or explain a measurement protocol or production-car eligibility rules, so the result is best described as BYD’s claimed record rather than an independently certified one. Read BYD/YANGWANG’s announcement.
What does “production car” mean in this case?
BYD says the U9 Xtreme will be built for customers in a run of no more than 30 units. That makes it a planned, extremely limited production model—not a car expected to be broadly available through ordinary retail channels. The figure is BYD’s stated production cap, not confirmation that all 30 cars have been built, allocated or delivered. The announcement does not establish price, ordering arrangements, market-by-market allocation, delivery timing or road-use approval.

The label “production car” should therefore be read in the context of BYD’s own record claim and its stated limited customer production. The sources do not provide the rules or independent verification needed to compare the label directly with other speed-record claims. BYD Middle East and Africa’s announcement gives the production cap.
What is the U9 Xtreme, and how is it specified?
YANGWANG, BYD’s high-performance brand, describes the U9 Xtreme (U9X) as an evolution of the U9’s technical architecture. BYD says the car was previously known as the U9 Track/Special Edition before being confirmed as the U9 Xtreme in production guise. The following figures are manufacturer-reported specifications, not independent test results:

- Electrical platform: 1200V, upgraded from the U9’s 800V system, according to BYD.
- Battery: an LFP Blade Battery with a reported 30C discharge rate. That rate is not a range or charging-speed figure.
- Motors and output: four motors, each running at up to 30,000 rpm, with combined output above 3000 PS.
- Tyres and suspension: track-level semi-slick tyres and revised DiSus-X suspension, which BYD says is adapted for track stresses.
BYD’s published specifications do not establish the U9 Xtreme’s range, price or road approval.
How does the Nürburgring result differ from the speed record?
BYD reports a separate U9 Xtreme result: a 6-minute 59.157-second lap of the Nürburgring Nordschleife on 22 August 2025, which it calls an Electric Super Sports Cars class record. This is a circuit lap time, not a top-speed measurement; it took place at a different venue and on a different date from the Papenburg run. BYD United States’ Nordschleife announcement reports the lap.

What has—and has not—been established about the record?
The published BYD announcements establish what the company says happened: the U9 Xtreme reached 496.22 km/h at Papenburg on 14 September 2025, and BYD describes that result as a production-car record. They also report the car’s specifications, the planned production cap and the separate Nordschleife lap.
Those announcements do not establish an independent certifying body, its measurement method, or the eligibility criteria behind the production-car designation. Without that protocol, a meaningful comparison with other top-speed records would require details not provided here, including each run’s measurement procedure and the rules for qualifying vehicles.
