Yes: BYD reported more passenger battery-electric vehicle sales than Tesla reported vehicle deliveries in the third quarter of 2026. BYD’s 762,478 passenger BEVs exceeded Tesla’s 486,532 deliveries by 275,946 vehicles. But this is a comparison of BYD passenger BEV sales with Tesla all-BEV deliveries—not proof that BYD leads on every measure of performance.
How large was BYD’s Q3 lead?
CnEVPost reported 762,478 BYD passenger battery-electric vehicle (BEV) sales and 486,532 Tesla vehicle deliveries for Q3 2026, a difference of 275,946 vehicles. BYD’s figure excludes plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and commercial vehicles; Tesla’s deliveries are BEVs. The figures are close market measures, but sales and deliveries are not guaranteed to use identical accounting definitions.
| Q3 2026 measure | BYD | Tesla |
|---|---|---|
| Reported vehicle count | 762,478 passenger BEV sales | 486,532 vehicle deliveries |
| Year-over-year change | Up 30.89% | Down 2.13% |

Did BYD outsell Tesla over the whole year so far?
For the first nine months of 2026, BYD recorded 1,629,957 passenger BEV sales, compared with Tesla’s 1,324,681 deliveries. BYD therefore had the higher reported unit total over that period, while Tesla’s year-over-year growth rate was higher across the nine months. A lead in cumulative volume and a faster growth rate are different findings, not contradictions. CnEVPost’s nine-month figures and growth comparison.

- WORKS WITH EVERY TESLA + OTHER EVs: Built-in Tesla-style plug (NACS standard) connects directly to Tesla Model S, 3, X and Y - and any EV with a NACS port - no adapter needed. The plug even has a button to pop open your Tesla’s charge port. Non-Tesla J1772 vehicles can charge with a NACS-to-J1772 adapter (not included). The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway.
- HARDWIRED - PROFESSIONAL INSTALL: This Level 2 charger is hardwired (not plug-in), so a licensed electrician installs it per National Electrical Code. It delivers up to 48A on a dedicated 60A, 240V circuit - enough to charge most EVs fully overnight. Want more speed? Your can set DIP switches 4 and 5 to unlock 50A on a dedicated 70A circuit. Before ordering, check your car’s port type and that your electrical panel can support the circuit.
- CONTROL FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start and stop charging, set the charging speed (6-48A), get reminders, and track how much energy and money each charge uses. Requires a 2.4 GHz home WiFi network.
- SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
- GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.
Why the category matters: BEVs, PHEVs and NEVs
BYD sells both BEVs and PHEVs, while the Q3 comparison above counts only BYD passenger BEVs. BYD’s broader new energy vehicle (NEV) total includes additional vehicle categories, so it should not be treated as a BEV count or compared directly with Tesla’s BEV deliveries.
That distinction is visible in BYD’s September 2026 report: it recorded 463,561 NEVs, including 273,143 passenger BEVs. For the first nine months, BYD’s total NEV sales were 3,131,576, down 3.94% year over year. Those broader totals answer a different question from the passenger-BEV comparison. Use the free app to start/stop charging, set speed (6-40A), get reminders, and track energy use and cost. Schedule off-peak overnight charging to cut your electric bill. Requires 2.4 GHz WiFi.
TrendForce’s Q2 2026 assessment also separates the categories: it said BYD regained the global BEV sales lead for that quarter, while BYD separately led the PHEV market. Its global NEV total combined BEVs, PHEVs and fuel-cell vehicles. A PHEV lead or an NEV total should not be presented as a BEV ranking. TrendForce’s Q2 2026 NEV assessment and PHEV market findings.

The comparison is unfolding in a rapidly expanding market. The International Energy Agency (IEA) reported that global electric-car sales exceeded 20 million in 2025, 20% above 2024 and equal to 25% of the overall car market. In that analysis, “electric cars” includes both BEVs and PHEVs, so the total is broader than the BEV figures above. IEA, Global EV Outlook 2026: Trends in electric cars.

China is central to that growth: more than 13 million electric cars were sold there in 2025, representing close to 55% of new-car sales in the country and six out of ten electric cars sold worldwide. These figures describe the market, not a BYD-versus-Tesla regional sales comparison; global totals alone do not establish which company leads in a particular region. IEA’s China market findings.

What the numbers do—and do not—show
- They show a Q3 passenger-BEV volume lead: BYD’s reported count was higher than Tesla’s deliveries.
- They show different Q3 momentum: BYD’s reported passenger BEV sales rose year over year while Tesla’s deliveries declined.
- They do not settle overall business performance: quarterly unit volume alone does not establish profitability, brand strength or total company performance.
- They do not establish a regional winner: the totals cited here are global, not a direct market-by-market comparison.
