BYD Says Its Electric Cars Can Add 250 Miles in Five Minutes—Here’s What That Means

BYD’s Han L, Tang L, and DENZA Z9GT are tied to dramatic five-minute charging claims. Here’s how the technology compares with Tesla and why infrastructure remains the catch.

BYD is the Tesla competitor behind the five-minute charging headline. In March 2025, the Chinese automaker said its Super e-Platform could add roughly 400 kilometers—about 250 miles—of claimed range to compatible Han L and Tang L vehicles in five minutes on a dedicated 1,000-kilowatt charger.

BYD’s newer March 2026 claim is more specific: its Blade Battery 2.0 and FLASH Charging system is advertised at 10% to 70% in five minutes and 10% to 97% in nine minutes, with a compatible vehicle and purpose-built charger. That is not the same as every BYD charging fully in five minutes, and the system is not currently established as a U.S. retail or charging-network alternative to Tesla.

The short answer: BYD has a serious high-power charging claim, but the charger matters as much as the car

BYD’s technology is significant because it combines a battery designed for very high charging rates with charging hardware rated far above the power of Tesla’s current North American Supercharger figures reviewed here. But the five-minute result depends on several conditions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A compatible vehicle and battery;
  • A dedicated high-voltage, high-current FLASH Charger;
  • The correct starting and ending state of charge;
  • Battery temperature, preconditioning, and software;
  • Available site power or an integrated energy-storage system.

For drivers, the practical distinction is important. BYD has demonstrated a new direction for rapid charging, but it has not shown that an ordinary BYD can be plugged into any fast charger and gain 250 miles in five minutes.

What BYD announced in 2025

The original headline came from BYD’s March 2025 launch of the Super e-Platform. BYD described a 1,000-volt architecture, 1,000-amp charging, and a 1,000-kilowatt—or 1-megawatt—charging system.

BYD said compatible versions of the Han L sedan and Tang L SUV could add approximately 400 kilometers of claimed range in five minutes. The vehicles entered pre-sales in China, with launch planned for April 2025. That announcement was explicitly about the Chinese market; it was not a U.S. launch announcement.

The 400-kilometer figure is a range-replenishment claim, not a statement that the battery goes from empty to full in five minutes. It also depends on the range-testing standard used for the vehicle. A claimed 400 kilometers under one market’s test cycle should not automatically be treated as 250 miles of EPA-rated U.S. range.

BYD’s newer 2026 claim: Blade Battery 2.0 and FLASH Charging

On March 5, 2026, BYD announced its second-generation Blade Battery, called Blade Battery 2.0, alongside an updated FLASH Charging system. BYD says the system can deliver up to 1,500 kilowatts through a single connector.

Under BYD’s stated operating conditions, a compatible vehicle can reportedly charge:

Charging session BYD’s stated time What the claim means
10% to 70% As little as 5 minutes A rapid partial charge, not a full battery
10% to 97% As little as 9 minutes A near-full session, although 97% is not 100%
20% to 97% at -30°C As little as 12 minutes BYD’s cold-weather claim under the specified conditions

BYD markets those figures with the phrase Ready in 5, Full in 9, Cold Add 3. The figures are manufacturer claims, not independent road-test results or a guarantee for every vehicle using the Blade name.

BYD says Blade Battery 2.0 remains an LFP-based battery and has a 5% increase in energy density over the previous Blade Battery. The company attributes the charging improvement to lower internal resistance, redesigned ion-transport pathways, changes to the electrolyte and electrodes, and a revised solid-electrolyte-interphase layer. Those changes are intended to let ions move through the cell more quickly while managing heat and resistance.

BYD also reported safety testing involving simultaneous FLASH charging and nail penetration. That is a company-reported test claim. It should not be presented as independent proof that every vehicle using the battery is immune to crash, thermal, or charging-related hazards.

Which BYD vehicle gets the technology first?

For Europe, BYD identified the premium DENZA Z9GT as the first vehicle scheduled to receive Blade Battery 2.0 and FLASH Charging. In its March 13, 2026 announcement, BYD said the Z9GT would debut the system at a Paris launch event on April 8, 2026.

BYD describes the Z9GT as a shooting-brake grand tourer with a 122-kilowatt-hour Blade Battery. The rear-wheel-drive version is advertised with up to 800 kilometers of claimed range. That number uses the relevant European or Chinese testing context stated by BYD and should not be converted into an assumed U.S. EPA range rating.

The Z9GT’s battery size helps illustrate why the charging claim is technically demanding. On simple battery arithmetic, charging a 122-kWh battery from 10% to 70% represents roughly 73 kWh of stored energy. Delivering that much energy in five minutes would require an average battery-side rate of approximately 878 kW before accounting for charging losses. A 10%-to-97% session represents roughly 106 kWh and would average about 707 kW over nine minutes. Those are rough illustrations, not independent measurements; a charger’s 1,500-kW peak rating does not mean it supplies 1,500 kW continuously for the entire session.

How the claim compares with Tesla

BYD’s compatible FLASH system has a much higher stated peak-power ceiling than Tesla’s current official North American figures. Tesla’s Supercharging support page lists model-specific range additions of up to:

Tesla model Range added in 15 minutes
Model S Up to 200 miles
Model 3 Up to 175 miles
Model X Up to 175 miles
Model Y Up to 162 miles

Tesla says the result varies with battery size and age, state of charge, temperature, vehicle configuration, and station conditions. Its documentation says V3 Superchargers can deliver up to 250 kW. In North America, Tesla says V4 Superchargers can provide up to 250 kW for the Model S, Model 3, Model X, and Model Y, while Cybertruck can charge at up to 325 kW at V4 locations.

Tesla’s current Model Y product page displays up to 144 miles added in 15 minutes for the configuration shown, rather than the 162 miles listed on the general support page. That difference reinforces why charging claims must identify the exact vehicle, battery, temperature, starting state of charge, charger, and range-testing standard.

The fair comparison is therefore narrow but meaningful: BYD’s compatible FLASH system claims substantially higher peak power and a shorter stated replenishment window than Tesla’s official North American Supercharger figures reviewed here. It is not accurate to say that every BYD charges fully in five minutes, that every Tesla needs 20 to 25 minutes, or that Tesla’s network has suddenly become irrelevant.

Why a 1,500-kilowatt charger cannot be treated like a normal fast charger

A charger rated at 1,500 kW is an infrastructure project, not simply a larger wall box. BYD’s 2025 announcement described special high-voltage and high-current equipment. Its 2026 materials also discuss energy-storage integration designed to reduce strain on the electrical grid.

That storage can help a site manage short periods of extremely high demand, but it does not remove the need for equipment, construction, cooling, electrical protection, software controls, and a suitable grid connection. The vehicle, charging terminal, and site must all be engineered as one system.

Real-world performance will also depend on factors that can make a major difference:

  • Connector and cable capability: The connector must support the vehicle’s voltage, current, communications, and thermal requirements.
  • Battery state of charge: Charging normally slows as the battery fills, which is why the 10%-to-70% and 10%-to-97% windows matter.
  • Temperature: A cold battery may need preconditioning before it can accept maximum power. BYD’s separate -30°C claim has its own starting percentage and time.
  • Charger sharing and site demand: Actual output can be affected by station conditions and how the site is configured.
  • Vehicle software: Charging limits and thermal management are controlled by the car’s battery-management system.

Tesla makes similar qualifications in its charging documentation. A station’s maximum rating is a ceiling, not a promise that every connected car receives that power throughout the entire visit.

How extensive is BYD’s FLASH network?

BYD reported that 4,239 FLASH Charging stations had been installed in China as of March 5, 2026. The company said it was targeting 20,000 stations in operation in China by the end of 2026.

BYD’s European announcement separately discussed an overseas rollout that included plans for 3,000 stations in Europe and 6,000 outside China within the relevant planning horizon. Those figures are deployment plans or company-reported counts, not proof that the planned stations are already open, compatible with every vehicle, or available in every country.

This is the central difference between the technology announcement and the ownership experience. Tesla’s charging advantage is not just the output of an individual Supercharger; it is also the established network that Tesla owners can plan around in the markets where it operates. BYD may have the more dramatic peak-power claim, but the value to a driver depends on whether a compatible FLASH station exists along the route.

Is this a Tesla alternative for U.S. buyers?

Based on the announcements reviewed for this article, the answer is not yet in any established U.S. retail sense. The Han L and Tang L announcement concerned Chinese pre-sales. The newer European announcement concerned the DENZA Z9GT and a scheduled Paris debut. The reviewed sources do not establish U.S. retail availability of these specific vehicles or a U.S. FLASH Charging network.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That does not make the technology unimportant. It means the most accurate description is a China-originated charging system with a developing European rollout—not a five-minute-charging BYD that U.S. drivers can presently order and use across a nationwide network.

Availability should be checked by country, vehicle trim, battery, charger location, and launch date. A vehicle sold under the BYD or DENZA umbrella is not automatically equipped with Blade Battery 2.0 or FLASH Charging.

What ordinary EV owners can buy today

For most EV owners, routine charging remains a home or workplace activity rather than a megawatt stop. A home Level 2 EV charger can be useful for overnight charging, but it operates in a completely different power class from BYD’s dedicated FLASH system. It cannot reproduce a 1,000-kW or 1,500-kW charging session.

An EV charging cable is likewise an everyday connection accessory, not a way to unlock faster charging than the vehicle, outlet, or station supports. Cable selection must match the vehicle connector, the charger or outlet, the required amperage, and the intended charging use case. A generic adapter or cable should not be assumed to make an unapproved vehicle-and-charger combination safe or compatible.

The durable IP65-rated waterproof housing and reinforced cable ensure reliable charging in all weather conditions, keeping your vehicle safe year-round.

For commercial operators, fleets, and property owners, the relevant question is not whether to install a larger home charger. It is whether the site can support high-power charging, energy storage, multiple vehicles, thermal management, and the local electrical and permitting requirements. BYD’s own infrastructure discussion shows why megawatt charging belongs in a commercial site-planning conversation.

How to evaluate any five-minute EV charging headline

  1. Identify the exact vehicle. Battery chemistry, capacity, trim, and software can change the result.
  2. Check the starting and ending percentages. A 10%-to-70% result is not an empty-to-full result.
  3. Separate range added from energy added. Range depends on the vehicle’s efficiency and the market’s testing procedure.
  4. Look for peak versus average power. A 1,500-kW maximum does not mean 1,500 kW for the whole session.
  5. Check temperature and preconditioning. Cold-weather claims need their own conditions, as BYD’s -30°C figure demonstrates.
  6. Verify the charger network. A remarkable charging curve is useful only where the matching equipment is installed.
  7. Check geography and launch status. Chinese pre-sales, European plans, and U.S. retail availability are separate facts.
  8. Look for independent testing. Manufacturer results are useful specifications, but they are not the same as an independently reproduced road test.

What BYD’s announcement means for the EV market

BYD has moved the charging conversation beyond the familiar question of whether an EV can add enough range during a coffee stop. Its stated 1,500-kW FLASH system and near-full nine-minute session point toward charging times that could resemble conventional refueling—at least for compatible vehicles at compatible sites.

The challenge is scaling the entire system. Battery cells must accept the energy without excessive heat or degradation, the vehicle must manage that power safely, and charging sites must deliver or buffer it. The rollout must then be large enough that drivers can depend on it rather than treat it as a demonstration.

For now, the defensible conclusion is narrower than the headline: BYD has announced one of the most aggressive production-EV charging claims in the market, and its official figures exceed Tesla’s current stated Supercharger performance on peak power and charging-window duration. Whether that becomes a practical consumer advantage will depend on vehicle availability, independent verification, and the number of working FLASH stations outside China.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a BYD electric car really charge fully in five minutes?

Not according to the precise claims reviewed here. BYD’s newer claim is 10% to 70% in as little as five minutes and 10% to 97% in nine minutes on a compatible vehicle and dedicated FLASH Charger. The earlier 2025 claim described roughly 400 kilometers of added range in five minutes, not an unconditional empty-to-full charge.

Which BYD vehicles support the five-minute charging claim?

The 2025 Super e-Platform announcement involved the Han L and Tang L in China. For Europe, BYD identified the DENZA Z9GT as the first vehicle scheduled to receive Blade Battery 2.0 and FLASH Charging. Vehicle availability and charging equipment vary by market and trim.

Can I use a regular fast charger to get BYD’s five-minute charging speed?

No. The claim depends on a compatible vehicle, battery, software, and dedicated high-power FLASH Charging infrastructure. A regular DC fast charger or home Level 2 charger cannot reproduce the stated 1,000-kW or 1,500-kW performance.

Is BYD’s charging technology available in the United States?

The reviewed announcements establish Chinese activity and a planned European rollout, but they do not establish U.S. retail availability of the specific five-minute-charging vehicles or a U.S. FLASH Charging network. U.S. availability should be verified through current local BYD or DENZA sales information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: BYD’s five-minute figure is a technically meaningful, manufacturer-reported charging claim—not a universal promise that an electric car can go from empty to full in five minutes. The compatible vehicle, battery state, temperature, and dedicated megawatt charger are all essential. BYD’s peak-power figures currently look more aggressive than Tesla’s official North American numbers, but Tesla retains the practical advantage of a more established charging network in the markets where it operates.
