These figures establish a volume comparison, not a comparison of revenue, profit, market value or production. Sales and deliveries are also different measures: one company’s reported sales should not automatically be treated as identical to another company’s deliveries.
Why BYD’s 4.6 million figure is not the direct comparison
BYD reported more than 4.6 million new-energy vehicles (NEVs) delivered worldwide in 2025, with exports above 1 million, in its 2025 company statement. NEV is BYD’s broader category, covering battery-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids. Tesla’s vehicle deliveries are not an equivalent count of BYD’s full NEV mix.

For the headline ranking, the relevant BYD number is its reported BEV passenger-car sales figure, not its 4.6 million-plus NEV total. The latter is useful for understanding BYD’s overall vehicle scale, but putting it beside Tesla’s BEV-oriented delivery figure would overstate the like-for-like gap.
What Tesla’s quarterly release does—and does not—say
Tesla’s January 2, 2026 Q4 release reported more than 418,000 vehicle deliveries in the final quarter of 2025. It also cautioned that deliveries are only one measure of performance and should not be relied on as an indicator of quarterly financial results, which depend on factors including selling prices, costs and foreign-exchange movements.

That caveat matters when interpreting rankings: delivery volume can show how many vehicles reached customers, but it cannot by itself establish how profitable a company was or how its finances performed. Tesla’s Q4 figure is an official quarterly number; the approximately 1.64 million full-year figure used for the comparison comes from a contemporaneous secondary report, not from that Q4 release itself.
China’s role in the 2025 EV market
The International Energy Agency’s Global EV Outlook 2026 says more than 13 million electric cars were sold in China in 2025—around six in ten worldwide. It describes electric cars as a grouping that includes both battery-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. In China, EVs accounted for nearly 55% of new-car sales in 2025; growth was below 20% that year after rapid expansion from 2020 to 2024.
That market scale helps explain why China is central to the contest between automakers, including BYD. It does not, on its own, explain the global ranking or establish how many vehicles either company sold in any particular country.
The IEA also found that five models made up about one-fifth of global BEV sales in 2025. Tesla Model Y represented nearly 8% of the global total and Model 3 3.6%; Geely Geome Xingyuan accounted for 3.5%, Wuling HongGuang Mini for 3.1%, and BYD Seagull for 3.0%. These are model-level shares, not company-wide sales shares, so they provide market context rather than a separate automaker ranking.

How to read claims that one automaker is “largest”
“Largest EV maker” depends on what is being counted. A sound comparison should use the same calendar period, geography, vehicle category and measure. For this 2025 headline, the reported BYD BEV passenger-car sales figure exceeds Tesla’s vehicle deliveries, but the underlying measures are not perfectly identical.
- Sales: vehicles sold, as reported by the source; check whether the figure is company-wide, market-specific or model-specific.
- Deliveries: vehicles handed over to customers, as in Tesla’s quarterly release.
- Production: vehicles manufactured, which is not the same as vehicles sold or delivered in that period.
A volume leader is not automatically the leader in revenue, profitability or market capitalization. Those require different data and should not be inferred from vehicle counts.
